KOMO Mornings

It's not Radke's vocal chords that neccessarily don't hit, its the delivery. Somthing about him just doesnt seem to work with 97.3. I know that the days of the smokey ballzzyy whisky soaked voice that pegs the VU's all the way to the right are far fewer and Bill Yeend clearly showed that from early on. But, his projection, a bit of passion and authority over what came out of his mouth is what controlled the show. Radke doesnt seem to have that part down. He seems to follow the show rather than the show following him.. I'm sure he's a very nice person and a great family man. A good guy all around and someone to have a beer with, but does all that sell cars and appliances?..

If you're only looking for a loud voice to sell cars and appliances, then that explains a lot of the stuff we get to hear on Seattle radio. That, and way too much caffeine. Radke is a professional, not a hawker, and I'm glad the people who now run KIRO-FM recognize that.

On the other hand, if you like hawkers and are into dominatrices, you'll probably love Dori Monsen in the afternoon (pardon me if I've misspelled his name). I don't listen to him precisely because I find his blustery style overbearing, his speech patterns unnatural and uncomfortable, and his politics ridiculous. There's no change in his cadence when he's "selling" crap, versus when he's spouting his ideas. ( ;)) I mean, would you really enjoy having dinner with someone who speaks like that to you the whole time? His demeanor is more like boy's night out at a strip club, than a credible, trustworthy voice I want to hear every day. The same critera apply for what I want to hear from a talk show host or a newscaster, in deciding whether I wanto to hear more from them, or not.

I guess that's why there's more than one kind of "audience" in the world of radio listening. Those who know how to appeal to their audience will "succeed"-- until some corporate beancounter blows it all up.

You make excellent points about style. Radio is an intimate medium, and the days of the big ballsy stereotypical "announcer" voice are gone. Genuine and real are what people respond to.
