Sometime around then I also recall KOPA flipping its AM 1440 to rock as "X-Rock" KXAM.

Wow really? What year did that happen? And what kind of rock did they play? I'm sure I was too young to remember because my recollection of KOPA AM was a repeat of the FM. However, I also recall times where they were not exact and sometimes even the song version on the FM was different then the AM

Ahhh...the mystique of the Valley's last daytime only station! Along a similar vein, Nurse Jeff and I'd like to ask the oldtimers if the name of the lumberyard has always been Ponderosa? Was it named after the spread Ben Cartwright and his love children called home on the Peacock Network?...or perhaps the famous steak house our truckin' buddy Howard used to crave?

Probably something much more prosaic: Since the Ponderosa Pine is the most common 'real' tree in AZ (discounting overgrown bushes like the Palo Verde and Mesquite), it's probably just named after the tree!

Back in 1967-8 KOOL-FM played the MOR tapes out of Bellingham WA. I think IGM was the automation unit, and (was it) BPI, Broadcast Programming Incorporated? The TV guys at the transmitter babysat the automation.

The problem with the tapes was that each tape (three hours in length) was meant to be played from start to finish. Each song at a 25 Hz tone at the end for local material. I guess two 3 hour reels could be put together to fill out a six hour "shift" as long as you put the right two reels together. The first one had the opening theme music, and the second one didn't. KOOL-FM didn't adhere to a typical radio schedule, and there were only two personalties running the music (Don McMasters and Del Only), so they played tapes to their completion and start the next reel.

One Saturday night one reel of tape came to an end and the next one started. Unfortunately, the second reel started with the same song that played at the end of the first reel. I don't know when the oldies format started on the FM, but there definitely was oldies on the FM.

Not to wander off subject but Howard hasn't checked in since before his heart surgery-wish he would!

Sorely missed by the Buckeye Boyz as he could really sniff out the best steaks under $10! Nurse Jeff and I hope he's doin' well after the heart surgery and eatin like the wascally wabbit in our garden. We'll never forget that scheme his truckin' buddy had to sell used lawnmowers and make a killing. Sounded like something we'd do :D

When I lived in one of the hick suburbs of Phoenix from 72 to 75, KOOL-FM was oldies... I even applied for a part time job there!

Hey David:

Do you remember when in 1972 you lived in Phoenix? This would give me an idea when the oldies format existed on KOOL FM in 1972.

Thanks

T.J.
