Think I recall more than a few posts saying and inferring that KOOL was sounding awful & going in the "wrong" direction (With Heavy 70's, some Disco & light doses of good 60's/80's tunes) with the format tweak, etc, etc....

Pretty sure you've checked out the latest Ratings?...Any questions?

PHX is fortunate to have one of the best sounding Oldies/Classic Hits station's in the Nation.

With the exception of a very limited number of minutes while in the car I don't listen to KOOL any longer. First choice is KSLX with KOOL as a backup. KRTH when online. I could care less what their ratings are.

Third in 25-54. 35-64 is not a sales demo, so most people do not look at it... but they are second there.
 
Kool's ratings are outstanding, and better than most oldies stations in major markets.

I think the station sounded a bit stale a few years ago. The thing about oldies or classic rock, in my opinion is you have to vary it up from time to time. I think the emphasis on late 70s and early 80s has really helped them tremendously, and is typical of what other oldies stations are doing.

I think they waited a bit too long to implement it, but regardless, this is the main reason why the ratings are up again. I also love hearing Camelback Jack in the evenings instead of the canned TK which was not even KOOL format at the time. That was a serious low point in KOOL's history.
 
Yes, I have a question....Does any remember KOOL-AM 960? Now there was an oldies station!
Big time variety, real djs' and even open lines for requests [remember when the folks could hear what THEY wanted to hear?] Well anyways thats my two cents worth.

Was Len Ingebrigtsen on KOOL Gold 960? I know he did morning drive for a number
of years on KOOL 960 back when it was an MOR format in the late '60s and '70s, and
afterwards on KMEO (740/96.9) and KLFF (1360).

But for many, many years, KOOL AM was a significant live and local station with terrific personalities and news. It took a backseat to KOY in ratings, but was a worthy competitor. Of course, this was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth...
 
The KOOL Gold 960 oldies format originated at KOOL(AM) and was syndicated
through SMN (now part of ABC [Citadel, Cumulus, whatever]).

I'm in my 50s now, and while I was listening to KRIZ and KRUX as a kid, my grandparents, of the Doughboy Generation, were listening to KOY and KOOL. Even my parents, who were 40ish then, thought those stations were for old folks. My mother is now in her mid-80s, and only listens to KOY when she's listening to radio at all (most of her favorite music is via Cox Cable). That's the only station she can stomach now - she's as fed up with today's radio as the average high school kid (and her middle-aged son).

I guess all I have to do is wait another 10 years, and maybe KOY will be playing Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin - the geezer-music for a new generation. ;D

I'm a tick older than you and moved to Phoenix in the mid-70's from Tucson. I remember listening neverto KOY every morning with Bill Heywood. After his show was over I would tune to KOPA or KOOL-AM.

My grandmother lived in Tempe from the late 30's through 1960 and I don't remember her listening to radio at all. She didn't even have a TV until '58 or so.
 
i was listening to KRIZ and KRUX mostly buti always remember dan armstrong (the late) on KOY 9-noon and when i heard him nationally thought he still sounded great. i remember KOY playing "Kay" by John Wesley Riles-heard it a couple of months ago on a classic country syndicator and it still sounded great to me
 
I'll agree they do need to go back to 50's and 60's maybe a select few of the 70's,even though i was born in the mid 60's i love hearing motown/60's rock-folk/doowoop music
