KOOL Cuts Jack?

For you eco101 students....The only way to keep the same margins in a horribly down economy is to cut expenses- welcome to the corporate world.

The latest rounds of cut are unforunate, but as others have said, in a PPM world ...music is why people are tuning into the radio-period.

Good thing the Nurse and I aren't Iraqi as we'd be throwing shoes at those who blame PPM for the recent cuts at See B.S.! It's all about the money and changes in technology that allow stations to operate with even fewer bodies. KEZ has done very well with voice tracking outside of AMD for years and others are catching on. The crappy economy has moved this to the front burner, especially for publicly owned outfits. No doubt about it, Big Shoe Stu and Camelback Jack will be missed. But both stations will go on.

While the local C(BS) brain(less) trust may have yanked the
most obvious references to Camelback Jack from the website,
there are still a number of active pages, accessible one way
or another.

Sure, I could tell you what they are and how to get to them,
but I'd much rather have the @#$% market manager spend his
whole day trying to find and delete them.

What I want for Christmas: a diary for the winter book, that can
be exchanged for a PPM in the spring, so I can write down, then
electronically credit, anything but 94.5.

Sadly, in this and other businesses, people are treated as liabilities instead of assets.

Congratulations, CBS, on saving a pittance by sacrificing people for incremental increases in cash flow.

There is no Winter book. Last diaries ever were to be mailed back last Thursday. And a diary is only for one week, and individually has no influence on the ratings.

PPM begins 7 January. Only full households are recruited, not individuals.

Then can you explain why the ArbyTron site itself states the last diary
for Phoenix will be winter 2009? As per this link:

http://arbitron.com/downloads/ppm_rollout.pdf

It's been discussed here in the past that PPM for Phoenix would start
in spring 2009, but no matter when it does actually start, anyone who
has a diary, meter, abacus, direct link to ArbyTron's secret hard drive ;D,
whatever, should send a message to the C(BS) suits by not giving any
listening credit to KOOL, or KMLE for that matter.

If music were all I wanted I would be much better off with almost any MP3 player turning out nothing but my favorite tunes.

No, I am willing (to some degree) to put up with commercials and not-so-favorite tunes to hear the DJ's I find interesting and entertaining. Virtually all the displaced C(BS) jocks given the pink slip this year fall into that category.

Now....back to my MP3's.

You are right. Arbitron has changed the schedule for rollouts several times. April will be first pre-currency book, May the second, and the June book will be "official" currency.

There will be no Spring book. There will be 13 28-day books. No rolling averages, no "trends."

:'(
What is so sad is that you all THINK that the KOOL bosses were happy about all the down sizing. The people who work for KOOL are a family, from what I understand everyone was very sad...tears at every level of managment. We should all understand the economy is bad and it effects every aspect of our lives....the newspapers have layoffs, the automakers of going bankrupt and banks are taking aways lines of credit from individuals and families. Do you REALLY think that all that bad news wouldn't touch radio? Radio makes their money from advertising...everyone is cutting back and NOT advertising.
You guys are angry...I am sad. Good people are feeling the pinch in the economy. Good people are getting layed-off.

I'm glad Tom Peak and Maria Knight are still there. It must be tough on them to see their friends let go. I wonder if one of them would be the next to go. Let's hope not!

I wonder if Beth and Bill could go next?? Seems like coast coast no matter how many years you have been in radio, they are cutting the top bread winners

So, long-time reader, first time poster here...

I definately agree it's a share to see what has happened to the air staff at KOOL over the past year plus. Years ago I fell in love with the station, for one reason... the personalities on the station. From Sammy Sherwood, to Liz Boyle, to Randy Stevens, to Lee Bortell, to Angela Allen, to Jeanne Sadello (sp?), to Jill West, to Bill Rogers, and I could go on and on.

It's true though... business is business.

One point I'd like to make is this: No doubt Camelback Jack is talented. I will add though, I worked in the building with the man sometime back, and there's no other way to say it, but... he wasn't the nicest guy to work with. It was tough to find many at the station who liked him. Back in the days of CDs and carts, and pulling the next guy's first hour of music... he was too good to do it. Sure, I could go on and on, but sometimes you don't feel too bad for the guy who gets the pink slip.

No doubt he has done well, and will continue to do well.

Well, I actually heard of GOOD radio news Friday morning, but then the news of this had to come later in the day and ruin it. For the first time ever, I’ve been left completely and utterly speechless. Or maybe it was what I really wanted to say, that made me wait. I can't tell you how furious, fed-up, you-name-it, I was and still am.

I was just listening Friday afternoon, and he supposedly was going on vacation after Friday. Or he was told he was being fired in advance?

Not too long ago, I thought how having Camelback Jack on in the afternoons was the ONLY thing about KOOL that has stayed the same since its glory days. I absolutely love Camelback Jack. He’s not just an on-air personality; he’s a true showman who brought the perfect personality, entertainment, and newsworthy content to our “stress-free ride home” every weekday afternoon, like only he could do it. I can’t tell you how much afternoons will be lacking, and I don’t care WHO permanently takes the shift. Camelback Jack is the kind that’s irreplaceable.

I’ll always miss heading home, and hearing him sign-on, ending it with “let’s roll.” I was also really looking forward to coming to the next event at 83rd Ave. & Union Hills, donate money and a few products to Packages From Home, and meet him for the first time.

As silly as I must be for being such an optimistic person, always finding some bright news out of the bad, I honestly believed there was no more that CBS Radio could possibly dare to do to KOOL. No doubt, their troubles as a corporation are not through, but how much can you possibly gut one station? But not just any station—remember the good ol’ days not too many years ago when the station reached spectacular numbers? And not too far off in the distance, I still recall KOOL in first place on a couple of occasions since I’ve been on this board. CBS Radio has gutted one of their top stations, time and time again this year.

Let’s try some metaphors and similes on for size… CBS Radio is a headless chicken running amuck (and I honestly don’t mean to imply that they are brainless). CBS Radio is like the person frantically throwing water on an electrical fire and wondering why it’s getting worse.

Forget about the other stations and markets for a second. Examining KOOL itself; the changes and layoffs throughout the year, and comparing January ’08 KOOL to December ’08 KOOL alone, shows just how extremely horrible the state of the industry is in. In case there’s possibly a doubter out there. It can’t be said enough, how absolutely terrible it is to see some of the best and most talented personalities lose their jobs, but it also doesn’t do any justice.

The instant Les Moonves or Dan Mason discover to themselves that this is not working, can’t come soon enough. Use all that knowledge and think of a real way to fix this dire emergency. How about starting with unconsolidating? I have a ton of ideas, but something different must be done!

Camelback Jack is one of my want-to-meet people, and hopefully I’ll get the honor someday. Thank you for all of the best afternoons that could be spent on radio! I wish the best for Camelback Jack.

Maybe it’s time to be a professional Christmas duet singer? :)

Just so you know.....Stu is Jewish. So, getting let go before Christmas doesn't have any meaning to him. Now, getting let go before Hannukah.....that's an outrage!!

Jeanne Sedello. Later of the K-Slacks morning show.

We know Lee (the master of the talkup) and Liz, Sammy was not too long ago--
same for Jill West, Angela "Middays" Allen (babe!) in the late 80s and returned
around 1994 or so for evenings, Bill Rogers did weekend overnights I want to say
sometime in the 90s...but the name Randy Stevens doesn't ring a bell at all to me,
and I've been in Phoenix since Cro-Magnon Man anchored TV news.

Closed circuit for IreneCaraFan: can you enlighten us more on Randy Stevens?
(Oh, and my "ring a bell" reference would have been better if your handle was
"AnitaWardFan." ;))

Can all this stuff get even stranger? Yes.

The CBS suits have allowed Camelback Jack to post a
"thanks and goodbye" message--even mentioning his
being laid off--on the KOOL website.

Cursor over the "On Air" button and click on "Camelback
Jack" in the drop-down menu.

I find your comments a bit more than insensitive. Who can say Christmas has no meaning unless you are he?
I am the walrus...

Now that's funny...are you saying we figured out who "he" is?

Randy Stevens did weekends/swing for a few years in the days of Lee 'Baby' Simms and CJ Brown. I don't quiet remember what year it was, but I do know he temporarily held down Nights after CJ Brown left... I think before Patrick Lee got nights and before Elsa. Do any of these names ring a bell?

He had a very sarcastic style... I remember him filling on on Nights and saying things like, "Man, I thought this is cool... Lee Baby left a glass of water, I went to take a drink, and what do ya know, it was vodka!" or "(Fill in the Blank) golfer just won another PGA tournament... boy, he's won more tournaments than Tom Peake's had girls through his back seat in the 70s"

It was always entertaining to listen to him as you never knew what he was going to say!

Does anyone remember Randy Stevens? Anyone know what he's up to these days?

C.J. Brown does--more so from KOOL Gold 960, but yes, I do recall her later doing
evenings on KOOL-FM.

Lee Simms--AM and PM drive on both the FM and AM at different times, IIRC. Retired
and in the Bay Area, as I gather from his infrequent posts on reelradio.com.

Patrick Lee--I can't really place him on KOOL although the name is vageuly familiar.

Elsa--she was prior to Lee Bortel's first go-round in evenings (before Dave Shannon).
Maybe his immediate predecessor? I think Lee arrived circa 2000.

Randy Stevens-- ??? does not Google well, at least not so far, so I cannot tell you
of his current whereabouts.
