KOOL-ECTOMY PERFORMED

Nurse Jeff and I were up late Halloween night, but happy to report we've surgically removed 94~Five from all our radios. Sorry but springing Xmas music while we were out trick or treating is surely the work of the Devil. Our Home For The Holidays is the Buckeye Media Hut...not some dumbass station playing ho-ho-ho music almost two months early!

Your KOOL-ectomy worked too well. They've been off the air since around 1 AM (if not earlier - that's when I woke up. My girlfriend had 94.5 on her radio yesterday, unfortunately). Looks like the carrier is still there (my stereo light is lit) but no audio.

Maybe Santa some elf-mafiosi from the North Pole to whack their STL. Maybe to send a message to all the other stations around the country that Halloween is too early to hear "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." ;D

Well, they're back on as of 6:38 AM. Legal ID and everything, which rules out a lamp-timer failure. ;D Unfortunately, it's back to the ho-ho-ho. ::)

We knew they dropped some hints in September during the
"Kiss Your Astra" contest, but this is unreal...and dumb.

I know the Old Gringo will probably dispute this, but KOOL's
(ever-growing again) audience in is the dumpster for most
of two months.

Closed circuit for PD Kris: bah humbug.

Or...is this a stunt? On another board, NFVG mentioned a
real clever promo he did for a station client which tricked
a competitor to flipping probably weeks before they would
have. If KESZ flips on or before Monday morning, does
KOOL retreat?

Wait a minute...NFVG just promoed (8:46am) something
about "holiday faves all weekend." We can only hope it is
just a weekend stunt.

Dunno about a stunt but driving my daughter to work this morning I thought her car radio was accidentally tuned to KEZ. Checked the dial and....nope, 94.5. Turned it off but she had already noticed. Now I am permanently disgraced in front of my daughter. Thankx "CRUEL-FM"!

The promos do say only for the weekend (thank God). KEZ has been known to drop Xmas music into later November weekends, but never this early. Clear Channel is already running two all holiday stations, I really wonder if this market can handle three.

"The Christmas Station" got KTWC noticed back in 1993 or '94, but you saw how much of a lasting impact it made.

Well, this totally reminds me of one great point of a nice conversation that I had with a KOOL listener last Saturday!

And what was mentioned? Every weekend is the same ol' thing ("That 70's Weekend"), and that we missed the fun weekends that had the different themes (ie. one-hit-wonders, girl group weekends).

Surely [enter joke here] THIS wouldn't be the direction we wanted!

kool christmas 10/31!? ..that's what 94.5 hd-sidebands are for.

i'm done with fm radio listening! ..what a disaster!

Christmas Music on KOOL...In October?
"CAPTAIN, ICEBERG DEAD AHEAD!!!!
(insert the sound of a small ocean liner sinking in my bathtub) ;)

If only a bearded Michael Rennie had listened when James Darren and
Robert Colbert pleaded with him to change course.

I can't remember if Darren lip-synched Goodbye Cruel World after the
collision. Don't think so, as it would have been historically inaccurate.
Not to mention demographically deadly for classic hits radio nowadays. ;D

The last book - KOOL was tied for FIRST 12 plus -AND the KOOL morning show has had the best ratings in over a year. The station sounds great. It is pretty sad that there are never any compliments on this board!!!

I thought it was a (back-handed?) compliment--that their audience
was increasing, but said increase may be jeopardized by a possible
eight-week or so detour to wall-to-wall Christmas music.

That said, it appears the weekend stunt has now thankfully ended,
although it ran well into AM drive today.

What's ahead? Only PD Kris knows, I suppose. ???

You're right, and it's a great accomplishment! I don't believe all recent changes have ran its course in an entire book yet, but of course, I hope the ratings do continue to rise.

You don't really think listeners could easily be "down in the dumps" in the past couple of months? Those who got used to listening to the more fun and more entertaining Lee Bortel in the evenings? But that's come and gone (in a matter of months), and given the fact that Tom Kent's show isn't too bad itself, it shouldn't hurt terribly, and this has already been discussed in great detail on and off this board... So that's that.

Let's look at the more recent hypothermic shock (am I right, Doctor?) of hearing Christmas music before the first trick-or-treater ever rang the doorbell!

Here's a personal "down in the dumps" moment for me... This is the very average listener part of me, that DOES listen to Tom Kent, and enjoys the show. I was actually looking forward to his special Halloween show that he's been promoting for several weeks now, but when I got off of work at 11pm, I heard Herbie and the Christmas music. What a big bummer!

Don't forget to think like an average listener: Do most say "Yipee!" when they hear all Christmas this soon, or would the more popular reaction be disappointment or annoyance?

I still AM just a listener, and as intrigued as I am with my knowledge I got from this website or those I've come into contact with because of this website, here's a prompt that would make an interesting discussion and perfect for the "season": is it not as risky as I would think it is to play 3+ days of Christmas music so early?

Obviously you've missed many of my posts this year, most especially in the post-Feb and pre-TK time period! However, for several days NOW, I've been a lonesome transient among the AM and FM dial... ;D "down in the dumps" indeed.

Yeah, KOOL is back to normal.

On-air at 8:42 is the only James Brown song they ever play.

I expect to hear Brown Eyed Girl any time now. ;)

(But it's still my fave local station.)

Christmas must be stopped.

KOOL doesn't much care about a base if they are going to spend 2 months a year playing the same old crappy christmas music.

Rant: Why does every single half a$$ed singer feel the need to do a christmas album? Do I need a "Mac Davis old home Christmas" album, or Nancy Sinatra or John Davidson, or Jimmy Buffet or Bruce Willis or Tony Randall or Bobby Vinton, or Leo Sayer, or Zanger and Evans or Ferrante and Teicher or Hall and Oates or Joyce Bullifant or Linda Lavin or Shecky Green or Roger Whitaker or Cliff Richard or Olivia Newton-John, or Sebastian Cabot or Leslie Gore Christmas?

Its just wrong. Ban Christmas!

This is great; I was wondering how far an unextended weekend could be extended.

And kudos to Kris! (My next compliment) is the fact that there's now an online poll getting the listeners involved in voting when they think the Christmas music should start. I'm assuming this will be it, until the day that gets the most votes.

I expect I'm not the only one who cares if they NEVER played another James Brown song.

Thank my stars he didn't have a Christmas album!

I heard this morning on KOOL that they were getting a lot of complaints about the Christmas music being played so early. This could be why they reverted back to their normal format after the morning drive. Their initial plan may have been to play Christmas music from now until December 25th. Stupid idea in my book (especially when the Summer Books show you as the #2 station in the entire valley), but would have given KEZ a run for their Christmas music audience.

Christmas music being stopped (or banned) until just before the holidays...maybe I can agree with that. I like hearing Christmas music (within reason) but do we really have to hear it for 2+ months ahead of time? I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and they're already playing Christmas music in the background.

Never ban CHRISTmas, though! :)
