KPFA

Besides, what would be on 94.1, if not KPFA?

It could also be KALW. Or another channel of KQED. Why not a frequency trade? The problem with KPFA isn't its signal. Millions of people are in reach of their signal, and they choose NOT to tune in.

But the point is that enough people are served by KPFA's diverse programming that they pony up real money to pay to keep it on the air. That's an important factor. How many listeners would pay real money to keep KOIT or KLLC on the air?

When I was at Pacifica's WBAI, the majority of the money came from wealthy benefactors and foundations, not actual listeners. Because truthfully, there aren't enough actual listeners.

When was this? It used to be Pacifica policy not to accept corporate or foundation grants. They wanted listeners to contribute.

A group further to the left of Pacifica discovered that a number of foundations, including the Ford Foundation and CPB, were supporting Pacifica.

The question is: What do you do when listeners stop contributing? Or when listenership money doesn't kep pace with expenses. What's more important? The mission or where the money comes from?

The fact is that any station that bascially keeps the same format intact since 1949 can't be doing all that bad.

They own the station free and clear. They picked it up the station back when the FCC was virtually giving FM stations away. The overhead is relatively low.
