KPRi holiday

With KyXy nearly at ten percent, there were a lot of ears listening to Christmas music.

Chris I doubt KPRi lost too many looking for XMAS music.... As a big AAA listener, I go out of my way to avoid the holiday music (which I've heard ad nauseum my whole life). Everyone I know who also likes the AAA genre, albeit a small sample, agrees with me. But like the man said ....

Stay tuned ;)

Agreed. I avoided holiday/Christmas music as well. Pandora "Leon Redbone Channel" kept me company for most of December.

As a former AAA programmer, I can tell you that the format is particularly susceptible to seasonal fluctuation. The Christmas music argument actually holds water; I'll bet a big part of PRIs drop was midday. Believe it or not, they do have a lot of at-work listening, and during the season businesses will turn off other formats to have the Holiday Hitz on in their stores and workplaces. Also, the format is sensitive to zip code distribution as well - you're going to have more KPRI listeners in Solana Beach, for instance, than you are in National City. When you have uneven respondent distribution, coupled with ethnic weighting, you can see the ratings pendulum swing wildly.

How does the format make any money?

Local direct business where the business owner is a fan of the station is a good place to start. Sell to people who measure business in dollars and not cost per point.

They got a spike in December. Holiday is more their normal level. Lowest cume of any full signal in San Diego.

Yeah. In a perfect world, people would seek out and appreciate excellent musicianship and intelligent lyrics. But they don't, and that's why AAA stations always suck in the ratings (except in very special markets like San Francisco and Chicago).

To make money with AAA, you have to do just as johndavis says - have a local and engaged sales staff who seek out the kind of business owners that do appreciate what the station is doing. You can't sell the station to media buyers, or nearly anyone, on the ARB numbers, but if you can get them to look at the qualitatives, you can easily convince them that the format's listeners are squarely in their desired age/affluence range. But it's hard work to do this, and most corporations want quick success, not a slow build.
