KQBU-FM changing call to KESS

93.3 seems to be back to normal now. But HD is about a second or so behind

We had some power outage issue at Devers tower, Entergy was working there and transmitter went down. Reset the disconnects and power supplies fixed the issue, left home at 10pm. Its so dark in the deep woods you cant see your hand in front of your face lol.
I feel for you. That road to the transmitter site is the worst ever, especially when it rains. It's a swamp.

KLTN seems weaker than usual, so I'm sure you're extra busy at the moment. You patch one issue and another pops up.

I can't believe it has been exactly a year since the accident that brought down the KLTN/KAMA tower. I'm sure there are lots of legal/insurance issues to sort out. Any updates? Or is it still corporate hush?

So then, KCOH 1230 is, by law, officially cancelled. It hasn't been operational since the crash. Would be the first Houston-area AM since KIOX/KFCC to go permanently dark, wouldn't it?

Im not sure what area your listening KLTN but with the former transmitter from the fallen tower site installed at its current tower site, it has more power than before.

Everything about that fallen tower we really have nothing to do, it was not owned by us. Im not sure what insurance has paid or not, maybe the legal team is working on that. I havent heard anything about the fallen victims lawsuit either. All we wanted is to fix the damaged equipment and return to the tower if its rebuilt.

KCOH filed a Silent STA extension around six months ago. Obviously with the government shutdown they are unable to currently file for another extension, but I would think the license remains active. We will see an avalanche of FCC filings once the shutdown ends.

I still don’t think the Ennis tower will be rebuilt. Inappropriate location for such a structure. Might have been allowed decades ago, but not today. Time for 102.9 to head out to Missouri City with the other full market FMs.

I assume you are talking about the towers for the KXLN and KFTH TV transmitters. Was there a FCC filing to move KLTN to one of those?
I can't imagine Univision would even attempt to file a motion to do that 🐸. There is still an allocation in place for 103.3 at Freeport that must still be protected. Univision may have a better chance at moving 102.9 to Missouri City if, and that's a big if, the group in Wharton's proposal for the frequency is eventually granted. That may very well take several more years .

The shutdown doesn't affect this, 🐸. Filings are timestamped, so when the Commission finally reconvenes to deal with what will certainly be one hell of an overloaded inbox, any filing for resumption of operations for KCOH had better be waiting on the FCC's desk with a date noted before 10-22-2025. It doesn't change the underlying issue that 1230 has been silent for, now, one calendar year. The Commission may not be working currently, but that doesn't give "Puebla de Galileo" an excuse to expect more time to get the station back to operational.

You ain't kidding.

It's on top of an ancient battery dump to boot. The TU engineer mentioned above that they're getting better performance out of KLTN since moving to the temporary TX site. Is it any wonder? How the damn Ennis tower wasn't eaten up at the base and at the verge of falling over, all on its own, is beyond me. The EPA might ought to consider turning that entire plot into a Superfund site. I'd certainly not want to be the sucker who gets the deal of the century, convenient to downtown and the Metro light rail line, new state-of-the-art condominium.

However Lance Venta, dealing with this very topic on the San Antonio/Austin board, said this:

“No filings can be made during the shutdown as all of the filing systems have been taken offline.”

🤔😐

Lance is correct. The FCC's systems were taken down right at the shutdown. It's especially frustrating considering that the FCC is self-funded through fees (not taxes) and the annual regulatory fees that nearly all commercial stations pay were due the week before the shutdown.

There are likely many applications that have been prepared in advance of the shutdown ending. There is also the Q3 of the Quarterly Programs and Issues Report that was due by October 10th for all stations that will be due to be uploaded within 24 hours of the reopening. Other report types too.

There are also various types of notices that may already be in effect but won't be filed until the government reopens.

The filing systems struggles on a regular basis already and it will likely be absolutely awful whenever reopening day comes. I feel badly for the FCC staff who will have a lot of backlog all at once for a shutdown they did not ask for.

Nothing will actually be due "within 24 hours" after reopening, and it's bad journalism from anyone who's reporting that.

EVERY time there's been an extended shutdown, the FCC provides extended deadlines once it reopens so that its systems don't crash.

That's likely to be something like a new 10-day window for the 3Q issues lists, for instance.

Couldn’t catch any of their names, but I heard a lady talking on KESS in the morning and during the noon they had a guy on air too sending shoutouts and naming the next song.

Seems they already have some on air talent.

Why is Estereo Latino the only Televisaunivision radio station from Houston not on iheart?
The real question is why are you using that clunky, ad infested app? It's designed to take as much information from you as possible. It's way too invasive for it to be a simple streaming app.

Download a custom player from your app store and manually add your own stations' stream URL. My favorite is VR Radio. It has ads, but a simple DNS ad blocker takes care of that (adguard works pretty well). The app works well with Apple Carplay/Android Auto and it also lets you record streams. Best of all, you can consolidate streams from several broadcasters into one platform. All you need to do is look up the direct stream (which shouldn't be hard by snooping the URL or looking at the websites' elements.

KESS might have a new morning show coming.

I keep hearing things about LISTEN TO ESTÉREO LATINO THIS WEDNESDAY AT 7 am BECAUSE WE HAVE A SURPRISE FOR YOU.

Would you say KESS signal is weaker, stronger, or about the same as before HD?
Also, would you say 93.3 have the equal, less or more signal or reception issues compared to other stations broadcasting from the same area. 100.7, 98.5, 107.9. Nothing against those stations but wondering if the antenna has issues on the tower. I always found 93.3 to be less than expected even in areas well within the local coverage vs distant.

The same. HD didn’t change anything.

The Devers area signals are all the same for me in NW Harris County. Occasionally strong tropo from Austin will affect 93.3 and 100.7. Same when strong tropo from the southwest causes the Victoria station to bother KQQK on 107.9. I don’t ever notice 98.5 being stepped on.

The one eastern rimshot that has frequent severe reception issues is KFNC, as we’ve discussed at length on these boards. However that Winnie area signal is ten miles farther away for me than the Devers sticks, and 97.5 often suffers a lot of tropo interference from co-channel KWTX and KFTX.
