KQKQ Q-98-5 Needs to stream!

Q98.5 needs to stream now. It' not fair. Now that WBMX Mix 98-5 is streaming, another 98.5 hot AC should do. What is preventing this station from streaming online? Make em stream please! Pretty please...? And also KSYZ 107.7 and KRGY Star 97.3 - they need to get on their butts streaming. They need the bigger audience since not many people are in NE really!

Really now...how many posts are you going to make Icy over a station or stations not streaming? The bottom line reality is that streaming doesn't really matter all that much to the bottom line for a station. While its nice to know people are listening around the country or world, its not where station's make their largest chunk of revenue.

For smaller markets, it's an expense since we make quarter payments to Sound Exchange for royalties on songs played over the stream. It also is not that much of a revenue driver and streaming doesn't matter that much to the local advertisers...what really matters to them is how many listeners and what kind of response is being created on the radio station's main signal in their own local market. The hardware store that advertises in Grand Island really doesn't care about someone in Boston, Milwaukee or Chile...they only care about the potential customers in Grand Island...where they make their money.

That night I was looking for new streamers but could only find one. I wish it didn't cost anything to stream but obviously it does, and a lot at that. What boggles my mind is how sites like Streamaudio.com say streaming with them is profitable. I don't know if that's still true or not but that's what I read there.

It CAN be, if it can be sold effectively.

BUT...ASCAP/BMI/SESAC want a LOT more money now than when StreamAudio (and others) started in the late 90's. So it's more than just bandwidth charges.

Having come from a major market, I can tell you that our costs to stream have gone from $400/mo to upwards of $1000/mo.

It's probably costing some stations in LA (provided they're on a mountaintop) as much to run their transmitter's electricity for a month as it does to stream!

In fact, streaming might very well cost MORE.

We make money on streaming and websites, not a lot, but it's a profit center and sure to get bigger over time...in 2007, it's foolish not to stream.

I totally agree. I think all radio stations should stream and it should be mandatory. I find that streaming not only gives us more listeners but it gives a much better sonic quality listening experience. Our stream comes direct out of our Optimod before it goes to the EAS and the transmitter. It is so nice and crunchy and is the purest way to hear a well processed radio station without any static or signal loss. If you don't believe it, then tune in and hear my station. There are links in my signature!!! I welcome any feedback!!! By the way, it is good to see a good radio discussion...
