KRLD HD and it's (lack of) HD Broadcast Quality

When I select 1080 on my HD Radio, the analog signal comes in first, then, after a few seconds, the HD signal is broadcast.

I do not like the quality of the sound of the KRLD HD signal as compared to the analog signal. The HD signal sounds tinty. I do not get that tinty sound from other HD channels....

I would prefer that KRLD not broadcast in HD, or, figure out how to engineer a great sounding HD signal.

KRLD's HD signal is unlistenable to me.

My home HD radio receiver does not allow me to disable the HD signal, (as I can using the car's HD receiver).

(Since the playlist of Rock music in Dallas is so very much on the shallow end of the pool, the only reason I use HD is for WRR and for HD-2 FM channels, to get AM broadcasts of 570 and 1310, so I can scan channels without switching bands...).

My questions for you to see if I can figure out your issues are:
What type of receiver are you using? Is it RF modulated to the FM band?
What are you hearing that bothers you? Please be a bit more in depth than "tinny" do you mean EQ or processor density?
Since the analog is bandwidth restricted to full fill the obligations of remaining in the "mask" the analog EQ wise will have a high frequency roll off. The AM HD is good out to about 15kHz as opposed to the 5 to 7.5kHz of the analog.

I listen primarily to the KRLD AM HD2 delivery on 105.3, but in spot checking I don't hear anything that stands out in particular on the KRLD-AM HD subchannel other than perhaps less aggressive processing which is a judgement call in terms of Hi-Fi versus processed AM. The high end is more pronounced since the HD bandwidth is greater than the analog..

My receivers are Kenwood AM/FM/HD, The "Boston Acoustics tabletop", and the "Directed" tabletop.
The Kenwood feeds a Carver amp, driving JBL 4410s, the tabletops are internal speakers, usually the 3 inch size which are not much for fidelity. The feed to KRLD AM feed to KRLD-FM HD-2 is a program audio feed direct from the AM console and processed with my usual tricks ;). The AM/HD is the same feed going to a brand new state of the art transmitter. So my guess is the difference in the HD processor setting on KRLD AM HD most likely the density.

Hope this helps to see if we can resolve what you are hearing.

That's funny, because HD is unlistenable to virtually the entire country... ::)

WBAP killed its HD signal several months ago, if I recall correctly. Was it for the same reason, bad audio quality?
WBAP probably thought it wasn't worth it.
The cost of maintaining the equipment, the fact you have to pay to use it, it kills reception, and ruins analog audio quality. Add that to the fact HD receivers aren't very common.

Plus does a talk station really need to be in HD?

WBAP probably cut the HD because they had to pay royalties to IBOC. And citadel was facing bankruptcy as well.

I listen to KRLD every day since WBAP dumped HD. I have and Accurian Tabletop with remote and built in speakers. sounds fine. Also a JVC Arsenal stereo and listen to both AM and the FM HD. Have to listen to the AM when Jones Trivia comes on long delay on FM and can't call in fast enough.

The JVC is great except in garland under power lines. It loses the HD and goes to AM. But we all know why that happens don't we? ;D

Having spent time in BOTH studios I like listening to them in HD. Its almost like I'm sitting in the room!

Otherwise sounds fine to me. Oh, and Jay Walker: My compliments to the electronic chefs over there!

Got me curious so I just compared the AM 1080 HD vs. the FM 105.3-2 HD. On my Sangean HDT-1X the digital output to a Pioneer receiver's digital input, on FM the audio is flatter more neutral sounding, less treble and bass. The AM HD sounds accentuated in the highs, and boosted in the bass to the point there is an audible hum (120 Hz?) in the audio. It's there on the FM too, but not nearly as noticeable. Also I hear more low frequency P "plosives" during talk on the AM HD. Of course I realize most folks don't listen to either version of KRLD on a home AV system with a 15" sub-woofer.

Could just be that BAP decided it no longer needed HD when it started simulcasting on 96.7.
WBAP Dropped HD long before they added the FM.
I think the HD was gone sometime in late 2008.

On my car radio, KRLD 1080(non hd) sounds very bassy and monotone to me. They need to add just a bit of treble IMO...

I'm pretty sure you can do that manually on your car radio...change the bass setting lower and add more treble.

ALL of the "legacy" ABC Radio AM O&Os dropped HD broadcasts, including WBAP, WMAL/Washington, WLS/Chicago and WJR/Detroit, sometime in 2008.

Not sure how that will sit with Cumulus, which is one of the biggest proponents subsidizers of the iBiquity IBOC standard.

I sure have enjoyed WLS with the iboc gone.
I hope Cumulus is not crazy enough to reintroduce such widespread pollution on AM, when sane minds have
already decided enough is enough.
