KRLD The "News" Station

Instead of coffee, I just use a morning alarm of shrill KRLD traffic copters. That will jar you outta bed, haven't overslept in ages.

Disclaimer: I do appreciate them but someone in the studio could give their info just as well - and give my ears a break also. It doesn't matter to me what intersection they presently happen to be flying over.

Good point. By the time all of them are done & then the weather forecast, it's time to start over for another of the "8's." Wait. Can't do that, we have to go into commercials again.

Hearing them yell over the chopper racket (anyone heard of eq) is just a pet peeve of mine, kind of like someone scraping fingernails across a chalkboard. They jar me out of bed, then I switch over to KLIF to give my ears a break.

Almost all of the local stations traffic jingles are annoying....the "beeps"...the "horns"...
But I gues they feel their job is not "Information" (How "Old" Fashioned!!!) but "Entertainment". .... There's a Time for Entertainment, and there's a time for Information. But... not in theie minds.... It's Always time for Entertainment AND Information. Once Again.... By Trying Hard to please Everyone... they Please No One. It's a Horrible thing to not know that you s-u-c-k...

It's all about trying to one-up the competition, namely WBAP. They do every 10 mins, so do we. We do 4-county coverage, so do they. They do traffic 24/7, so do we. Now WBAP's got an airborne reporter starting at 5AM...so how long until KRLD does the same? I'd guess that one day, we'll have choppers in the air for 14 hours straight.

Now if the chopper noise is an issue for KRLD listeners, c'mon over to WBAP...I fine-tune the EQ constantly to get as much whine and static out of the mix--and do so on nearly every airborne report in the mornings. And no beeps or horns in OUR sounders!

Well, some suck, others blow. :D

What’s so bad about entertaining & informing at the same time? Do you not watch the discovery channel? Half of their programs do both, at the same time.

And you do know that little Mesquite station sometimes says something like entertaining and informing the community, right?

Much appreciated Mike, wish everyone else was on board with this. I've also noticed KLIF now plays "Baby You Can Drive My Car" - the "Beep Beep, Beep Beep, Yeah" on their traffic reports. It used to be a drum machine with car horns every few seconds. I love the Beatles but it's already getting old - it's like a bad commercial that ruins a great classic song.

Sounds like you guys at WBAP have the right idea.

Thanks very much! Ya know, KLIF's traffic reporter Bill Jackson is part of Traffic.com like I am, and he's probably the most conscientious traffic guy in the area.

What about NPR? During drive times they're far and away a better source for news (although traffic reports are few and far between) with much better in depth coverage. I know NPR has deeper pockets for national coverage but even their local coverage is much better and they don't have 4 minutes of commercials for every 10 minutes of programming.

And I can't stand that smarmy Mike Rodgers. He's one of the reasons why I don't listen to KRLD for anything other than traffic during my commutes.

Yeah... isn't that the Clinton's family mantra?! ;D

Thanks, I'll be here all week

The 570 Beatle song, just plays the guitar rif, Over-and-Over-and -Over again, and again....even thorugh the station produced spots.....

That's not cool. The Beatle riff is not so great, to be played so much.

It's obnoxious, and a channel changer, for sure.

Bill is probably one of the best traffic reporters in the country. He knows his stuff and he can ad lib as well. Too bad he's on a station nobody listens to.

Bill does a great job. They just wanted the Beep Beep line & just used that riff loop as a filler. But I agree there were a lot more George Harrison riffs that were way better, especially the slide guitar stuff.

If it has to be Beatles for traffic reports, I'd vote for "Why Don't We Do It In The Road."

I vote an instrumental.... not "looped"....

Just play ZZ Top's "Asleep In the Desert"

and SRV "Rivera Paradise"

Has nothing to do with driving per se.... but I think I can retain the traffic information better with that music playing in the background.... And, if I'm listening at home... I won't be changing channels. :)

Easy...

It's KRLD and WBAP throwing darts at each other when they (the stations)
don't realize the listener doesn't give a crap.

Joe Listener could care less if you have 4 or 100 traffic reporters...
Just give me the damn information! I could care less if you're in an
F-18 or a mobile reporter in a Turbo Yugo if the info is accurate and
timely.

And has anyone ever thought about how pompous it sounds for both
stations to have an aircraft exclusively for Denton and Collin counties?

What makes them so damn special than the other metro counties?

There's just as much development going on in Parker, Wise, Rockwall,
Ellis, and even Johnson counties!

Stupid thing is...when those reporters are saying they are flying over
Denton or Collin counties, 99% of the time THEY ARE NOT!.
Trust me, theshadow knows.... ;)

I second that! Mike's a good guy. So is Laura, Monty,
Randy, and Michael. Can't say much about the rest...
;) :D

But...., oh yeah..., Bill's a class act too. And not in a bad way. Ever
critical of himself, he's one of the few out there that genuinely
CARES about his listeners, and the information he provides
...We need more like him....

Ooops, sorry about that.

I didn't mean to imply Laura was a dude.... ;D ;D

KRLD is a class-act station that cares about QUALITY, not quantity. Why be concerned with very minor traffic details? Unlike the other "conservative" AM stations KRLD remains consistent, live, fresh and informative. KRLD knows it's sweet spot while others struggle to find their market niche. KERA isn't bad either.
