FROM A NEWS RELEASE DATED 8/21/08:

"NewsTalk 740 KRMG is pleased to announce that Dan Potter has been hired as News Director and Assistant Program Director for KRMG, Tulsa’s #1 News, Weather and Traffic Station.

With 25 years in radio journalism, Potter was most-recently News Director and Morning News Anchor for NewsTalk 820 WBAP in Dallas-Fort Worth. In his 13 years as News Director, he helped transition WBAP from a full-service country music station to the Lone Star state’s most-listened-to and most honored news-talk outlet.

Dan has anchored many major breaking news stories and large events including wall-to-wall anchoring during the attacks on September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City Bombing, the Branch Davidian siege at Mount Carmel, the demise of space shuttle Columbia over North Texas and the inauguration of President Bush.

“Dan Potter brings a level of credibility and achievement compatible with KRMG’s heritage as Tulsa’s radio news leader,” says KRMG Operations Manager Drew Anderssen, “We expect him to enhance that image as well as lead KRMG’s on-going effort to expand the station’s online news coverage.”

Potter has received dozens of honors, including the DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton, Texas AP Broadcasters Awards, Press Club of Dallas Katie Awards, and the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Major Market Newscast. He was once dubbed “Texas’ Most Listened-To Radio News Anchor.”

“KRMG’s heritage and national reputation as Oklahoma’s dominant news radio station is what drew me to this job,” says Potter, “but, the beauty and vibrancy of Green Country is what sold me on it. These are exciting times for this region and I’m eager to call Tulsa home.”
Away from the newsroom, Dan is an avid ‘foodie’ and has hosted multiple food and cooking shows in the DFW Metroplex.

He is also well known in high school and college music circles for his lifelong involvement with competitive marching bands and drum corps. He is the stadium announcer and Jumbotron talent for the national competitive marching band circuits Bands of America and Drum Corps International. His Drum Corps International podcast, “Field Pass,” spent seven weeks this summer on the iTunes Music Podcast Top 100."

I realize it's just coincidence, but KRMG's last two big hires have been from WBAP:

Morning Show Host Joe Kelley and now Dan Potter.

A question for someone in Tulsa: Has KFAQ made any ratings inroads against KRMG, or are they a lost cause?

Congrats to Dan! All I have to say is its WBAP dropped the ball on keeping him around and instead would rather run 12-16 hours a day of right-leaning talk than have real news.

WBAP's loss is Tulsa's big gain. Dan's a real pro.

As for KFAQ, they were quite dynamic sounding in 2005-06. The AM drive guy that was getting noticed is gone now. Don't know the circumstances. Tough to compete with Cox and the KRMG history. KRMG seems to have the edge in signal as well.

Also found it odd when I heard Fox News on both KFAQ and KRMG in '06. Was that ever resolved?

The AM drive guy left for WWTN in Nashville early in 2007. His self-destruction at KFAQ is well documented on this site and elsewhere. KFAQ's new morning host, Pat Campbell, worked most recently in Orlando. He's a frequent guest on Fox and Friends.

KFAQ is now the exclusive Fox news affiliate in Tulsa.

KFAQ's signal reaches 38 states on the night pattern and at least a good 75 mile radius
during the day. KRMG has the edge when it comes to local news and maintaining a true,
fully-staffed news department. The KRMG product is tough to beat, too. Just wish
KRMG had KFAQ's signal strength.

I have yet to meet Dan in person, but we did talk for about 20-miuntes, several weeks before he accepted the position. He struck me as the right guy to take KRMG News/staff to the next level. I think he will be great. I wish him nothing but the best.

John,
You are a class-act. If you get burned out at the city, come to KFAQ. MDG is gone, so it is safe now.
The new guy has big shoes to fill.

KFAQ gets into a minimum of 38 states at night and 9 states in the day.

But KRMG can be heard very easily in the OKC metro area day and night. KFAQ cannot...

KRMG has always been the fighting ship of the line. It has a rich history who life long Tulsans appreciate in a way only a Tulsa native can. What a truly great radio station. I'm glad we have 740 KRMG. It is as much a landmark to the Tulsa airwaves as Tulsa's dowtown skyline is to the eye. I was very sad to see KVOO AM go the way of the evening paper.
