Kroger and Albertsons in talks of a merger

Down here in the Valley of the Stunned Albertsons already owns or co-ops with Safeway. So is the merger proposing Albertsons and Safeway are both going to be rolled into Krogers or will Safeway disconnect from Albertsons/Kroger?
All three are within a mile of each other in NE Mesa. One or two will probably be closed or sold off.

Not known yet... but they did say that there would be a number of cases of stores being sold or closed when two post-merger locations are too close to each other.

Near my hunting grounds (McClintock & Warner) we have a Fry's and Safeway one mile apart along McClintock then another mile south we have Albertsons then one mile west is a very large Fry's Marketplace. And directly in the middle of all that is poor little Bashas.

But why do we need all that when just another mile south of Albertsons there is Espo's - one of the greatest Mexican take out joints in all creation? If they'd build a Whataburger near me I'd die happy - and probably very quickly!

Off-topic, but valued info... ;)

They've been in Pima County for decades, but feel free to take the rip-off of Whataburger from New Mexico called Blake's Lotaburger away - now!

Don't get me wrong, I'm more of a fan of red vs. green chilis, but their whole menu is Whataburger + chilis on everything.

SMH

Eeges seems to get all the publicity in Tuxson. My personal down south is Lucky Wishbone (after growing up in The Olde Pueblo. I'm just mad because there are chicken joints galore in my neck of the woods (and there are no 'woods') but the nearest Whattaburger is miles away.

FedEx bought out DHL's U.S. shipping routes and turned it into FedEx Ground. For quite a while, FedEx Ground was operated as an almost completely separate company from regular FedEx. The drivers were all independent contractors who had to provide their own trucks. It wasn't uncommon to see one pull up in a Ryder rental truck.
You are partially right. DHL absorbed Airborne Express which was always an also-ran 4th or 5th rate US carrier that itself dabbled in ground type shipping with little to no success. I've been in the shipping industry for decades, Airborne was laughably awful. The money DHL dropped to acquire Airborne did very little to broaden their footprint in the US and probably hurt them financially more than helped so DHL in the US smartly pivoted to what they do know, International shipping. It is DHL's brand niche and they do it very well.

FedEx acquired Roadway Package System (RPS) and converted them into FedEx Ground. You are right that FedEx Ground operates as a separate company and it still is true today. The route owners & drivers are all still independent contractors. Just look on the side of any FedEx Ground truck. Somewhere on it you will find the contractor's name and DOT info that owns that particular fleet. I'm sure FedEx incentivizes contractors to fly the FedEx logo for them but I'm unsure how deep the relationship goes other than maintain a certain level of professionalism FedEx as a corporation expects or POOF! your route gets yanked out from under you for someone who can.

Kroger and Albertsons to sell 413 stores to C&S for $1.9 billion as part of merger

Kroger Co. rose the most in six months after agreeing to sell 413 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers in a divestiture designed to help win antitrust approval for its $24.6 billion merger with Albertsons Cos.
C&S will pay $1.9 billion in cash for the stores, the companies said in a statement Friday, confirming a Bloomberg News report Tuesday. Closely held C&S is a major grocery wholesaler that also operates Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly stores.
Kroger is betting that the store sale will help it persuade the US Federal Trade Commission to allow the Albertsons transaction, the centerpiece of the retailer’s push to keep up with Walmart Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.

This is big news...and a lot of them are in the Pacific NW and Montana. So, do they change their names? In PacNW, our Kroger brands are QFC (Seattle/Portland only) and Fred Meyer, the hypermarket / department store. Since they own Piggly Wiggly...do we see a return of the Piggly Wiggly name to the west coast? We haven't had those stores around in decades.

In Colorado (and California), C&S gets rights to the Albertsons name.

Potential example in my new Denver neighborhood: Safeway and King Soopers (Kroger) are across the street from each other. Even better, the Safeway gas station is in the King Soopers parking lot!

So which one will go to C&S? The Safeway is pretty good; King Soopers isn't so super as far as I'm concerned, but I'm afraid it will be the one that doesn't change - even though it's the one that needs to change - while the Safeway, which is doing a good job, will end up being messed up.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, C&S is acquiring the QFC brand in the "Pacific Northwest", Marriano's in Illinois, Carrs in Alaska, and Albertsons in AZ, CA, CO, and WY.

That's the upscale grocery store that is only around in Seattle and Portland (mostly Seattle). I haven't been in one since I last *lived* over there, and it's been almost ten years. Carrs was operated by Safeway for a very long time up in AK.

Will they keep the QFC name or change them into Piggly Wiggly's? Which I doubt will have a 'warm' reaction in Seattle...

Note that this AG is also running for governor, so he may believe this is a way to make headlines, show he works for the people and is on their side, blah, blah...

WA attorney general sues to block Kroger, Albertsons merger

Washington state has asked a judge to block a proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons, arguing that the $25 billion deal would harm consumers and raise prices in a state where the two retailers account for more than half of all grocery sales.
The suit, filed Monday morning in King County Superior Court, appears to be the first formal move by state or federal regulators to halt the acquisition of Albertson, which owns Safeway and Haggen, by Kroger, which owns QFC and Fred Meyer.
“This merger of the two largest supermarket companies in Washington will severely … limit vital competition that keeps grocery prices in check,” Attorney General Bob Ferguson said at a news conference. “This merger is bad for Washington consumers.” Ferguson is running for governor.

I assume it's also 200 miles to a Walmart, Starbucks and Home Depot? So about five hours driving to Anchorage?

You clearly haven't looked at a map
