KROI Radio Now 92.1 is done

One possible option for 92.1 (should Urban One choose to retain operation of the frequency) - the classic soul "Classix" format the company programs on stations in Philadelphia, Atlanta and perhaps some other places.

Personally, I don't think such a move would be a good idea, as it would cannibalize sister station Majic 102.1.

I think seeing 92.1 repurposed for use as an FM simulcaster for Sportsradio 610 KILT would be a great outcome.

The problem is that that "3" was nearly all 50 and over. Black, like Hispanic, ad buys are almost all targeted at 18-49.
True. I was just pointing out that the station is capable of drawing a bigger audience than it currently is. Finding the right format to achieve that is another matter…

92.1 was never in the Beaumont / Port Arthur market.
Well, not KROI or it’s predecessors. However B/PA did have the old KTFA on 92.1 prior to 1991. It was a Class A on the frequency along with KETX Livingston, KTSR B/CS, KMKS Bay City, and of course the then KRTS. As part of the KRTS upgrade the other signals moved to different frequencies and were granted their own upgrades. The current KCOL 92.5 is the old KTFA.

I wouldn't rule out Boom making a comeback, but with a much restricted/younger playlist to protect KMJQ (think of late 1990s - early 2010s Hip-Hop). They could even focus heavily on the Texas rap scene that was popular in the 2000s.

Flanking KQBT out of existence is probably something Radio One would love to try again.

KROI has decent coverage in the large African American neighborhoods of Houston (3rd Ward, 5th Ward, Sunnyside, Acres Homes, Northeast, Missouri City), so it would make sense to use 92.1 to make iHeart tap out.

I wonder when the flip will happen? Promos for Monday's Kidd Kraddrick Morning Show are still being played.
If I remember correctly when 92.1 LA MERA MERA went off the air, they had announced a beach party for that Saturday. And then the next time when I tuned in it had become praise. I don’t remember when exactly La Mera Mera went of the air. But wasn’t long after that beach party. So anything can happen. Memorial Day is around the corner too.

Odd choice considering this will split some of KMJQ's audience. KBXX could have used the help flanking KQBT. Maybe Radio One wants to discourage competitors from coming after their older audience? Better to split your audience in-house than split it with someone like iHeart or Audacy, I suppose.

Also a bit weird the station's liners keep identifying 102.1 HD2 along with 92.1. Seems redundant.

Wasn’t the reasoning 10 years ago that Praise’s audience was too old, which is why it flipped to News 92? Unless Radio One found the Fountain of Youth, this is an odd pick. Not to mention the much more competitive Christian radio landscape compared to 10 years ago.

I wouldn’t necessarily assume the return of the Praise format is permanent...this may be filler preceding a sale. After all the format never really went away as it had continued on 102.1 HD-2, so this is a continuation of a continuation…and could be setting the table for a new, religious operator.

OTOH Radio One might just be seeing how well the format does on a somewhat improved signal from its previous incarnation before making a final decision on future ownership of 92.1.

Nonetheless I am surprised at this move. The audience that was “too old” the last time around is now ten years older…unless the music is going to be quite different.

This move is so bizarre and with the not even full-throated branding feels like the decision was either made very quickly or it is a cheap place holder until the next shoe drops.

You say more competitive, but I do wonder how much overlap there is between something like Praise and KSBJ and KJKK. I'm sure there is a little, but if i had to guess, i'd say it is probably quite small. Much more overlap between Praise and Magic.

I would imagine this new Praise will "borrow" some listeners from KWWJ/KYOK.

So lame...

FM radio continues its descent. The medium is transforming into a gigantic trash heap.

This is strictly a cost cutting move. 100 percent of Praise programming runs on the full network of stations, and there is probably minimal dedicated sales staff to the brand in the markets where it airs. Majic staff will be expected to sell Praise, too.

If you look at it from a company perspective, they've sold stations with this format in Detroit and most recently Philadelphia. So perhaps that's the plan here.
If that's the case, then why not just fully automate Radio Now until a sale happens? Praise is definitely going to take some listeners away from KMJQ while they shop the station around.

I think Radio One is simply shoring up their older black listeners and making it harder for a competitor to enter the market against KMJQ.

Maybe. I also think there's a way to do this format and not have it trend so old. It's been my experience that it's not just older black listeners who listen to songs of praise.

This format is definitely going to get better numbers. It may not be my cup of tea, but there is an audience for it.

Selling that audience is a different story.

That has been radio in a lot of places since the 2008 recession. The days of seeing stations with full staffs is long gone.

Moving forward, this will probably be the only way radio can remain profitable. Too many emerging technologies are making it hard for radio to remain financially viable moving forward.

What I don't get is if someone has such a dislike for radio, why spend time on a radio discussion board dissing the business. In my mind it would be a waste of time.
I think there is a degree of frustration when, given an opportunity to launch something new, different, innovative and interesting, Radio One just decided to trot out a format that failed over a decade ago. It screams "We are out of ideas and have no idea what to do."

Meanwhile the RadioNow website is still there, but with the Praise webstream. Oddly a recent stopset on the stream included a promo for the "OnAir Laura" midday show...assume that is not what went out OTA. The new Praise website, which includes both 92.1 and 102.1 HD-2 branding, is up at Praise Houston
