KROQ FM Kickoff top 500 of alltime

Worth noting the highest song from the current decade (2010s) landed at # 78 Radioactive-Imagine Dragons (correct me if I'm wrong) So what does that say about recent music?

The awful song rankings are yet further proof that Kevin Weatherly needs to be shown the door.

He is old and clueless.

Some of the choices for the top 25 are absurd, including the #2 overall song.

So what does that say about recent music?

Nothing. All it says is KROQ is living in 2002.

The three stations that Kevin programs together account for 12% of the total market billings of LA.

When you are responsible for a number of stations, you will always have one that is in the greatest need of attention. Going through a sale is hardly a good moment for an ambitious restructuring, either.

There is no way KROQ bills anywhere near the $50 million+ is used to bill during its heyday.

KROQ is getting its butt kicked, and KAMP isn't doing so well, either. Entercom definitely should bring new programming talent on board for both stations.

If KROQ continues on its current trajectory, I guarantee you that station will be billing substantially less money two years from now compared to today.

That high $40 million billing was over 10 years ago.

Since then, the entire market has gone from nearly $1.1 billion in revenue to just a touch over $700 million. That's a loss of over 35% without adjusting for inflation.

That's about what KROQ is off by. And, considering that they have been "for sale" for well over a year and have a direct format competitor that they did not have before, the station has actually held up reasonably well.

Amp is doing more than twice the revenue it had in 2008-2009.

If they are smart, they will hold firm while the staff gets used to new ownership and let the the stigma and uncertainty of being for sale fade.

I don't have a crystal ball. But I would not bet against Kevin, who is one of the best programmers I have every watched from "across the street".

If KROQ wants to retake the ratings it once had they need to play new songs ONLY! At least during the morning show. KROQ was at its best when they premiered new music and hit all the new hits keeping us current to what's now hot. Now they play, relative, oldies for the old farts and nostalgic kids in the audience. Seriously, we have KRTH for that.

Rant over.

Wherever I may have been, one of the things I always hoped my competitor would do is play new music in morning drive.

I used to be a fan of KROQ but find myself listening less and less. Their music seems too old and loud, almost like KLOS. I now prefer KYSR, whose music seems more current and melodic.

Amp didn't exist in 2008. Obviously a good deal of that billing is from KLSX.

Same station, different call letters, same owner, different format. Same revenue stream.

Needless to say, "Greatest (anything) of all time" depends on the age and generation of the person listening. Even though I'm in the target audience for 70s "Classic Rock," I find most of it pretty boring these days. 70s soul music is another thing - aside from the "old school" songs that have been burned to death on Oldies/Classic Hits radio, I still like listening to this genre, but I'm sure it sounds anachronistic and silly to listeners in their 20s thru 40s.

I recall that in the early 70s, the Bill Drake stations (KHJ, KFRC, etc.) used to run a weekend marathon called "The Million Dollar Battle,". The station would play, "The Champion" ( a song that had gotten the most votes so far), then play "The Challenger." Whichever song go the most votes would be the new "Champion," then they'd play it over again, followed by a new "Challenger," and so on. It was an odd format, because often the "Champion" might play 15 times over the course of an hour or two, until it was beaten. So I suspect people would sometimes down-vote the Champion just to get it off the air.

But I digress - my point was that these were supposed to be the "Greatest of all Time." While there were a lot of "goldens" (oldies) on the list...Stones, Beatles, etc. - the list skewed heavily toward recent and current hits. I remember hearing "The Last Song (I'll Ever Write for You)" by Edward Bear about 15 times in a row. I doubt if that was on anybody's "greatest" list even one year later.

What a complete waste of time. Music appreciation is subjective. I notice the list has the diversity of a bag of marshmallows, ow wait a minute there is Bob Marley at 41!

If you want diversity, you are generally not going to find it in alternative rock.

And nearly all classical music was written by European white guys... are you going to complain about that, too?

Music preferences (not "appreciation") is both personal and cultural.

And speaking of culture, you need to look at the cultural aspects of ethnology or at least study basic cultural anthropology (which is the course of study in college that most benefited me in programming to different targets in quite a few different countries).
