Oldies76: 400 isn't enough to really go deep. Nevertheless, I voted for "Good Timin'" and "Sail On Sailor" on their website.
I'll probably be listening to the WCBS countdown anyway.
Airpab: I don't think anyone wants to hear "bad" songs. There are probably some songs like "Having My Baby" or "Convoy" or "Disco Duck" or "Honey" that are pretty much considered bad by everyone. There are also really dated songs like "Delta Dawn" or "You Light Up My Life" that are just cringe city to hear now. Songs like that should probably only show up during a big countdown, or a specialty show, or some day when a DJ is having fun. (If DJs were allowed to choose...)
BUT....there are SO many other GOOD songs to play out there. Not dated, not cornball, not novelty. But GOOD. Sure, they might not be as univerally loved as Brown Eyed Girl. But they're good songs, at least to some of the audience. And if not, they'll stick around if things are interesting.....maybe the next song will be their favorite.
Moreover, the more these playlists shrink, the less people know the songs. Thus, only the overplayed songs get rated as "familiar." The result: small playlists that are BOOOOORRRRRRIIIIINNNNNG. Totally burned songs. I mean, do you REALLY need to hear Rocket Man ever again in your life? It's become wallpaper. If these oldies stations were smart they'd "train" their audience to love lots of songs. But you have to play the songs for people to get to know them.
Anyway......K-Earth does a good job of selecting songs that GO with their "sound," and avoiding stuff that's too heavy, too country, too dated, too 80's.... But they could still maintain that "sound" with a broader playlist. They did it last weekend.
