KRTH, KCBS-FM and Wikipedia

Scooty430 Kudos to K-Earth. I hope they continue in that direction and dig up some more nuggets.

Great! KRTH needs some good specialties to freshen up again. Listening to CBS-FM in NYC and hearing lots of jems from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, A to Z. A major market station doing this, maybe a trend for "specialties" on classic hit stations. In fact, as I'm posting, hearing "Ain't That a Shame" by Fats Domino from 1955. Also heard "Ahab the Arab" from '62, among tons of other hits.

This WCBS list is going to be huge. A guy on the XM board took the K-Earth 1001 list and alphabetized it back in January. Looking at the "A"s side by side, the WCBS list includes all the K-Earth songs from the 1001 list, but adds in about double to triple the amount of titles. Definitely "oh wow" city.

Scooty,

KRTH is advertising the Firecracker "400" for the upcoming weekend. I guess we know what that will consist of, huh?? I think the CBS-FM 3000 song A to Z might just take priority here.

scooty430-

Understand the desire for more variety, but playing a bunch of crappy/cheesy songs doesn't necessarily add up to better radio. A bad song is a bad song not matter how you cut it.

Can KRTH stand to add some more titles and dig a little deeper....of course! But overall, KRTH just seems to sound better.

Oldies76: 400 isn't enough to really go deep. Nevertheless, I voted for "Good Timin'" and "Sail On Sailor" on their website.

I'll probably be listening to the WCBS countdown anyway.

Airpab: I don't think anyone wants to hear "bad" songs. There are probably some songs like "Having My Baby" or "Convoy" or "Disco Duck" or "Honey" that are pretty much considered bad by everyone. There are also really dated songs like "Delta Dawn" or "You Light Up My Life" that are just cringe city to hear now. Songs like that should probably only show up during a big countdown, or a specialty show, or some day when a DJ is having fun. (If DJs were allowed to choose...)

BUT....there are SO many other GOOD songs to play out there. Not dated, not cornball, not novelty. But GOOD. Sure, they might not be as univerally loved as Brown Eyed Girl. But they're good songs, at least to some of the audience. And if not, they'll stick around if things are interesting.....maybe the next song will be their favorite.

Moreover, the more these playlists shrink, the less people know the songs. Thus, only the overplayed songs get rated as "familiar." The result: small playlists that are BOOOOORRRRRRIIIIINNNNNG. Totally burned songs. I mean, do you REALLY need to hear Rocket Man ever again in your life? It's become wallpaper. If these oldies stations were smart they'd "train" their audience to love lots of songs. But you have to play the songs for people to get to know them.

Anyway......K-Earth does a good job of selecting songs that GO with their "sound," and avoiding stuff that's too heavy, too country, too dated, too 80's.... But they could still maintain that "sound" with a broader playlist. They did it last weekend.

110% agreed!

I emailed KRTH last week and this is the response I got from them the other day that will put an end to this rumor about KRTH and KCBS-FM mergering:

"Hello Anthony,

Yes, these are false rumours started by an employee at another radio station. We have corrected the K-Earth entry. We would appreciate anything you can do to correct the 93.1 entry.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Program Director"
