KSAC to go Gospel on Monday

to catch lib talk on a big station that knows how to do it right and offers a full panoply of ideas..try KGO...I'm on 10p-a....former ksac host..
I was always pressured to quit KGO......by KSAC.....I never even considered it for a second..Now I'm finally free to say yes to KGO whenever they ask. I've been caretaking a 92 year old parent for thirteen years..am no longer.. He's a big KGO fan also!!

This was on the 21Q blog on Sac b's page today. Thought it would provide insight into what she was thinking because of the speculation of late:

"I was ready for this change - I just wasn't having fun anymore," Nelson says. "The whole political thing has gotten nasty, dirty and contentious."

And it didn't help that major political companies didn't support the station during its four years as a liberal talk radio station, she says.

"There are all these Sacramento Democratic organizations that haven't spent a dime on (advertising) for our station," Nelson says. "To them I say, 'You did this - you were complicit, you shut us down.'

She talks about the format too. She called it "hip hop gospel."

That's it, blame somebody else. Typical. I've never worked for this person but from what I've read she nor anyone she hired could sell ice to an eskimo.
You have to go get advertisers...they don't grow on trees you know.

True, SFSAC, but as another recent poster somewhere in radio-info-land
accurately said, it's tough for the liberal-talk stations to get the advertisers,
especially those affilates on sundry and/or low-impact AM signals...the
"conservative-talkers" have long had the head-start on A.A. and others
of a similar ilk...

A possible exception is Portland's KPOJ, but it would not surprise me if they
have trouble getting advertisers, too...and I seem to hear more PSAs and
Promos on KKGN, Green 960, in Oakland (SFO), at least this past Fall...

KPOJ is probably a combo sell with KEX.

I have a client going on both KNEW and Green 960 in SF and they have some good deals on 960. I do suspect they are having trouble there, though, especially because outside of Savage, KNEW is not much to talk about, so it's hard to sell either.

I can imagine she would have had a mighty tough time getting anyone worth having to work there. I doubt the station could afford any significant draw while people got ramped up, and I don't know why anyone who was working or had worked at a big operation would bring their clients to KSAC and take a huge paycut in the process.

And being a liberal...I hate to say this, but we wonder why the other side laughs at us...because many on the left seem to blame everyone else for their own failures...this Paula blaming everyone but her inept leadership and poor decisions on the demise of KSAC, is just laughable.

Don't hire any sales people check!
Don't market the station check!
Offer little to no entertainment value (hello inform AND entertain) check!
Have an inferior signal check!
Don't hire radio pros to help run station professionally so PEOPLE WILL WANT TO ASSOCIATE THEMSELVES WITH KSAC.....BIG CHECK!

But is it because advertisers didn't come to her and beat a path to her door, and do her work for her...yea, and since Trump didn't come seek me out for a job, it is his fault that I am not a millionaire...brilliant!

Put out a little bit of effort Paula, you may get lucky.

Mark my words...different format...same leadership and bad philosophy. Still bad radio!

While it's true that Paula Nelson could have done differently, let's give her credit for what she did do--and did well.

KSAC was one of the first stations in the country to launch Air America. Nelson then put together a pretty good line-up of programs, including the Christine Craft show, which was always well done. The station talked about and acted on local issues and the PSA's were relevant, rather than just filler. The station developed a following and even began to unite many fractured liberal groups. It was popular enough that Entercom (KCTC) took the KSAC package (or stole it) and essentially copied it--with some changes. Enid Goldstein ran against Christine Craft, but Craft beat Goldstein not only in the ratings but also in the depth of relevant issues, national and local.

When KCTC took Air America, Nelson brought Ed Shultz who often beat Air America in ratings. And Nelson was smart enough to bring back Mike Malloy, who had a huge following in Sacramento.

Of course, there were things that I never understood, such as leaving Air America at 6pm and going to the Bev Smith show....oh well...

Paula may not be the most business savy, but let's give her credit where it's due.

And, no, I'm NOT a member of her family or one of her friends :)

Don't have any first-hand info on 1240, but heard the horror stories from some of those who worked there....

Bottom lines: Air America is a failure. 1240 has a bad signal. Bad signals and lousy programming? Boy, you have to be one hell of a salesperson to make anything out of that. And how will music...gospel or otherwise...sound coming from that weak, broken stick?

Not too hard when all you have is 1 (and maybe half) of another local show....then yea put the rest on the bird

So being fair maybe she did make some logical moves, but based on her overall body of work and leadership, she failed, and to blame anyone else is just ignorance or ego.

New format...but the constant is who is in charge...give it 6 months, and you will hear the same old thing, can't sell, it is the churches fault, I did all I could...

I'll give her credit debt. That's the only credit I'll give her.

With the change to gospel, does this end the Sharks coverage in core Sacramento market??
I guess you'll have to listen to KAHI in Auburn for playoff coverage.

Yes, probably... But KAHI (950am) in Auburn does carry most, if not all, of the Sharks hockey games as well as the Kings and Oakland A's. I listen to the games quite a bit.

OK. Let me get this straight. Just because some of you never listened to KSAC, that means that no one else listened to it either? Is that what some of you really think? I've been a faithful, daily listener for the past 3 years!! And many of my friends were too! I loved Christine and was just sick when she didn't come back. Then, imagine my surprise when my radio came on at 6:00 am last Monday morning and it was gospel instead of my beloved Stepanie Miller!!! It was like being in an alternate universe! The only good thing about KSAC being destroyed is that I NEVER have to listen to that dumb bunny, Michelle Fay, TRY to read the news ever again! Is she related to Paula? Because she certainly cannot read the news or even sting two coherent words together!! Well, guess what, Paula? I can stream my favorite shows on the internet and I don't need YOU for that! So, I hope everyone enjoys the gospel music -- I'll be streaming Stephanie and the Mooks, thank you very much!!
