KSCO and KOMY Maintenance, New Personalities

KSCO/1080 and KOMY/1340 in Santa Cruz are reportedly undergoing extensive transmitter and tower maintenance during the next few days (weather permitting, Don Mussell?) which should result in a great improvement in coverage for both stations. KOMY's transmission system is said to be in need of the most service -- I've heard from several people that its ERP was estimated at about 200 watts during the daytime, a mere fraction of the 1000 watts it is licensed for.

During the maintenance period, one or both of the stations might be off the air or operating under reduced power for extended periods which might last through this weekend. During these periods, KOMY can be heard through the audio links at http://www.KOMYradio.com and KSCO's programming will continue on http://www.ksco.com/ksco.m3u.

With the repairs -- and considering the station's tower location on briny Corcoran Lagoon -- expectations are that KOMY's coverage should improve greatly in the Monterey Bay Area and extend its reach well into the San Francisco Bay Area. Estimates I've heard are that the 1000 watts should boom out like 5000.

I understand from another well-placed source that a popular former KFRC air personality (and no stranger to this board) was seen visiting at KSCO/KOMY World Headquarters on Wednesday, and could be on the air as KOMY's new afternoon man as soon as next week. Plans are being finalized for the hiring of new morning and midday personalities, both of whom are well-known in local radio circles.

Let me guess, None other than John Mack Flanagan, afternoon drive with this Legendary DJ makes any commute in this Bay Area a cake walk, Im anxious to find out if Im correct? The Bay Area got the "short end of the stick" with years of the Ron and Cammy doing afternoon drive here!! Kenny in Concord

A silly question, how is anyone going to make money playing oldies on a am radio station? other than your "talkers". The fm side is having a hard enough time with people switching to satellite and Ipods. Could the high fidelity of "mono" be making a come back?.

Don't forget that brand new fangled AM Stero that everyone's been talkin about...KFRC AM STERO 610!

Not a silly question at all. Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay Area is not a huge market -- it's currently #80, with about 500,000 potential listeners -- and it's a perfect niche for this format. It isn't cost-prohibitive, there are countless opportunities to market and promote the station locally (Friday night concerts at the Boardwalk, car clubs, etc.) and the station is independently owned, so there are no demands from the home office in San Antonio.

Beyond that, it's being marketed toward people of a certain age who still know how to use an AM radio; in fact, one of the liners is "KOMY 13-80 -- The Reason Your Car Still Has An AM Radio."

So far, listeners have driven from as far as San Jose to pick up copies of the Solid Gold Hit Music Survey. The station is breaking "new" Oldies, such as the "Love Mix" of the Beatles' "Hey Jude/Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)". Song requests are pouring in from throughout the area. I've had the opportunity to hear voice messages from listeners, and their enthusiasm has been remarkable.

Oh, and advertisers are starting to buy spots on KOMY, something that hadn't been happening under the previous format. (Yes, there were reasons for that -- but it's still good news that sales are being made now because it's Oldies, even though the station has the same ownership.)

A follow-up question what you said does make some sense but what was the story with KYAA am 1200 (peoples radio) out of the same market? they played oldies and had the support of local advertisers as well as car clubs but they could not survive ( at least with that format).

RadioDX, just maybe KOMY has a "Better Lineup", Disc jockeys = ratings, and you can bet if John Mack Flanagan is on, hes got alot of loyal followers! Unfortunatly we just cant have a Oldies format here in the Bay Area, The right people on the air take the ratings to the Top! Car Clubs surely are into Oldies Stations, I dont think Movin would Fit In to a car show Like for instance The Good Guys show! Oldies Live on RadioDX!!! Kenny In Concord

DX,

Here's the explanation that I heard -- it may not be the true story (I heard it second- or third-hand), but it makes some sense. KYAA had brought in decent ratings and spot sales were fairly brisk, and as a result two stations in the area (both on FM) switched to Oldies. Suddenly the advertisers and the agencies decided to hold back on buying spots on KYAA.

Meanwhile, KYAA owner Joe Rosa received an offer to LMA the station for a fairly healthy amount ($35,000 a month?), which he accepted, and the station flipped to East Indian programming.

Again, that's the story as I heard it ... Jim Vossen may have a more accurate rendering of the story than I do. (Are you out there, Vossenova?)

BossRadio, thanks for the explanation, it does sound about right, I think I do remember an fm'er doing oldies at about the same time. I thought I heard they had some cash flow problems from the start, thats why they went to a satellite service near the end and they even had problems paying for that also.

Re: KOMY/1340 New Personalities

It sounds like John Mack Flanagan and Jay Arnold will be starting on Oldies KOMY/1340 next week. The station is streaming via its website at www.KOMYradio.com if the winds aren't strong enough to blow the signal in your direction.

Meanwhile, my server, which had been originating KOMY's audio for the first few weeks, is running Oldies based on KFRC's surveys and playlists from the late 1960s, along with some great Big 610 jingles sprinkled in for seasoning.

"The Big 610" audio feed is at mms://sc3.spacialnet.com:9784

You may have to copy and paste the link into Windows Media Player, Winamp or Real Player to get it to work. I'll be adding some classic KFRC clips and other surprises to the mix over the next few weeks.

Im hoping the signal makes it here, John Mack Flanagan, back on the radio, where he has Quite a Few listeners awaiting his debut! After years of "CBS/ Infinity" KOMY seems like the old KYA1260, a little more easy to listen to , Im thrilled that John Mack Flanagan is on, I would have been dissapointed to see Blackstone back on the radio. theres hope yet for Bay Area Radio!! I haven't been able to get KOMY's stream to work all week: the links that previously had opened Windows Media Player etc are now only getting me an error message. I've emailed them to no avail.

Mike,

I just went to the website (www.KOMYradio.com), clicked on the six different audio links, and each one brought up the audio just fine. Try pasting http://207.111.193.2:9020/listen.pls into WMP and see what happens.

If you tried to email KOMY, I'm not sure where your message went to. (Yes, I'm currently taking care of their website. I can assure you, plenty of messages are coming through just fine.)

That link is precisely what is not working -- I get an "unknown file" error message when I click on the WMP links on the KOMY website. Prior to last week, clicking on those same links immediately opened the player. Nothing on my end has changed since then.

There appears to be two separate feeds from KOMY. The Shoutcast feed appears to be the actual KOMY station broadcast, while the KOMY 1340 feed is "KFRC."

Can any technos out there elaborate on this?

Thanks

Listening to the feed on shoutcast, the DJ presence is minimal to say the least. Sounds like voice tracking.

I home John Mack Flanagan add a bit more personality on his shift.

mitchtab,

Could you please let me know which link you are using to get to the KFRC feed?

Thanks,

DJ
