KSIQ-testing with full power

Does anyone know there phone #?And where can you get some Q96 stickers??

And when are they going to put some ads up?And a new website? I'd really love to see their new logo.

Out of curiosity, I listened to the station all my way into work today (from Rancho San Diego into Escondido). Reception was very clear from my house up to Miramar, then it got a bit scratchy. Just south of Scripps Poway Parkway, I abruptly lost KSIQ and picked up a different 96.1 broadcasting entirely in Spanish. The format's not really to my tastes, but I can see it having a real shot at success in a market where Top-40 is, frankly, underrepresented.

I just heard her on the air just a few minutes ago. It's sure refreshing to hear a
live, local voice instead of voicetracking or syndicated stuff.

So just being local makes it better? That may come as a major blow to CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC and the cable webs...

Yes. It's always better to hear someone locally than someone hundreds of miles away
who don't even know what's going on in the city.

That's patently and demonstrably untrue. And today, "local" is a very vague and tenuous concept since the "local community" to, let's say, a Facebook devoteé is anywhere a friend lives. Anyway, how local and live are the major competitors to radio such as iPods, satellite, Pandora, etc?

This is the best-expressed debunking of "localism" I have read locally... http://www.hear2.com/2010/03/what-does-being-local-mean-anyway.html

I saw the Q96 'Jeep' parked on the side of the 78 just east of 15 in Escondido. I'm hoping that logo is temporary :)

Why are you hoping the logo is temporary? I thought you liked the variety on Q96?

I didn't comment on the variety (I made a few comments on audio/sound quality)... I don't know that their programming is as it will be (can that be more cliche? ha)

You're right - I shouldn't comment on the logo - too objective... BUT to clarify my objectiveness, I just think it lacks professionalism (again, my opinion... which doesn't matter :) ) It's kind of hard for anyone to agree or disagree at this point unless he or she has seen the Jeep on the 805 or 163 or 52... Hopefully they'll get it up on the interweb so everyone can see!

Until then, stay glassy San Diego.

When is the live talent on during the day? I've listened a few times and still haven't heard anyone. Also are they finally starting to run commercials instead of music 24/7? This afternoon they told me I was in the middle of "55 minutes of music on San Diego's new Q-96."

I heard the same thing about the 55 minutes of music, but havent been listening for a long enough period of time to hear commercials. Philosofy, I heard the live talent on around 12:10-12:15pm.

And about the whole local thing, I agree with whoever said it does make it better. I didnt read the article so I dont know what that says, and frankly, it doesnt matter. I know that I prefer the on-air talent to be local and not voice-tracked. That's one thing I cannot stand about 933, with most of those DJ's being in LA, especially because the majority of them used to be right here in SD! That's the only thing that saves them for me, is the fact that they were here before so they are familiar with the area and dont mess up the cities and stuff, but I prefer them to be local. I can't imagine I'm alone in that. Now, whether or not the radio gods care, is another story.

2 points:
1. I had a Q96 bumper sticker on my school notebook, my graduating year in High School, so by all means, I'm happy about a heritage station like Q96 coming in to do battle with 933. When there's competition, listeners win. For too long San Diego has lacked competition in that area. (Z90 is NOT a Top 40 radio station, they do not report as mainstream CHR).

2. What makes you think Q96 isn't voice tracking? If anything, I would expect them to Voice Track in the same shifts that 933 does. Cherry Creek is a much smaller company, with stations in smaller markets and probably doesn't have much money to throw around.

listeners don't care what stations report as ....they care about the music you are playing. San Diego in general is a rhythmic leaning market because of the composition of the market population. Usually at least 75% of the music is shared ....sometimes more...rotations will make a difference of course as well....but based on what music is out at the time, they can be very similar. You can see that in the duplication studies between stations..A very large % of the audience goes back and forth between 933 and Z.

Z 90 IS a Top 40 station. When they changed their imagining back around last summer, they adjusted their playlist top lean more mainstream Top 40. Right before Blazing 98.9 went jockless and eventually to ESPN. Anyone who thinks Z90 is Hip Hop or CHR doesn't listen to Z90 regularly.

9-3-3 is sounding a lot like a hip-hop station recently... hopefully Q96 has much more variety than 9-3-3. But hey, at least 9-3-3 doesn't skip out on new hits. KIIS in LA has been doing that a lot, its annoying. I rather listen to 933 than KIIS.

Wrong. All wrong.

Exhibit A.
Here the top 20 songs from Z90's playlist, from their own website:
1. Nothin' On You - B.O.B. Ft. Bruno Mars - Rebel Rock/GH/Atlanta
2. Imma Be - Black Eyed Peas - Interscope
3. Tik Tok - Ke$ha - Kemosabe/RCA/RMG
4. Tie Me Down - New Boyz Ft. Ray J - Asylum/Warner Bros.
5. Bedrock - Young Money Ft. Lloyd - YM/CM/Universal Motown
6. Sexy Chick - David Guetta Ft. Akon - Astralwerks/Capitol
7. Telephone - Lady Gaga Ft. Beyonce - Interscope
8. Rude Boy - Rihanna - Def Jam/IDJMG
9. Carry Out - Timberland Ft. Justin Timberlake - Mosley/Interscope
10. Say Aah - Trey Songz - Songbook/Atlantic
11. Baby - Justin Bieber - Island/IDJMG
12. In My Head - Jason Derulo - Beluga Hts/Warner Bros.
13. Replay - Iyaz - Beluga Heights/Reprise
14. Gangsta Luv - Snoop Dogg Ft. The Dream - DS/Priority/Capitol
15. Bad Romance - Lady Gaga - Interscope
16. I Love U - Chris Brown Ft. Ester Dean - Jive/CBE Ent.
17. Say Something - Timbaland Ft. Drake - Mosley/Interscope
18. Pyramid - Charice Ft. Iyaz
19. Fantasy Girl - Baby Bash Ft. Marty James - Bashtown/Upstairs
20. Forever - Drake / Kanye West / Lil Wayne / Eminen - Interscope

Not an alternative track to be found.
See any Miley Cyrus? Nope.
Lady Antebellum? Nope.

Exhibit B.
Z90 reports as "Rhythmic CHR." NOT as Mainstream CHR. (see: http://www.worldlingo.com/ma/enwiki/en/Rhythmic_Airplay_panel and: http://www.allaccess.com/mail/eblasts/mediabase/Mediabase_Monitored_Panels_080606.doc)
The question was not "what do listeners consider them to be," because that does not define their format. What defines their format is what the station reports as, which is a reflection of what that stations considers themself to be. If Z90 is reporting as something other than what they are, then they are comitting a fraud on Arbitron and Billboard.

Exhibit C.
Radio-Info.com lists XHTZ in the ratings as "Rhythmic CHR." So, if I'm wrong, then I guess so is Radio-Info.com. A few of you seem to know better than the rest of us.

The most requested music in San Diego may have a Rhythmic slant. But that is reflective of the region. That does not mean that Z90 is Top 40 just becuase some songs are crossing over. I welcome people who work at Z90 to come on the board and tell me they are Top 40. If not, well you have your answer.

I don't care what "you feel" something should be. Facts are facts.

saying that what they report as is what defines the format is absurd....

Industry terms do not define a station....its the listeners perception and the music they play that truly defines a station...The listeners could care less what industry terms are...and at the end of the day the listeners vote for their favorites by their listening...
