KSL to Finally Run SNL

Headline 2015: "Average IQ of KSL viewer drops 35 points over past two years".

At least this will put SLC viewers on an equal footing with the current national audience.

They claim that it wasn't because of the content that they didn't carry SNL, it was because of their Saturday night sports show, which has turned into a ratings dog. They offered to run it an hour later but NBC refused.

I know that KSL causes NBC a lot of headaches, but they are still a pretty strong affiliate otherwise, and Bonneville is a reputable company, though they do radio better than TV.

Interesting reaction from KSL that the real reason was a sports show was more important, and NBC turned them down for 11:35. If I were NBC, I would still take 11:35 on KSL over some indie station, where it ended up. Something doesn't add up here, but I'm glad KSL is doing an about-face, however it came about.

Hmm, KSL finally clearing SNL...is this an early sign of Bonneville thinking about selling the station?

Gannett will probably have way too many after merging with Belo, leaving Hearst or Meredith as the potentials.

Hearst is mainly an ABC shop, Meredith is mainly CBS. If/when they sell the station, they'll probably put in some condition requiring them to keep airing the annual LDS conference like Pat Robertson did with the 700 Club when The Family Channel was sold.

I give it one telecast. As soon as a church official sees that show or gets a complaint from a member, it'll be gone.

You may be right but I wonder if any Mormon church officials
have seen "SNL."

KSL, as I pointed out on another thread, was a constant
headache for CBS as well, and for much the same reason:
pre-emptions of programs deemed by the Mormon church
to be inappropriate (also, it was one of CBS's weakest affiliates).
Bill Paley, however, was tolerant of the station, understanding
the reasons for the pre-emptions (and I believe KSL had been
with CBS since radio days).

KSL got NBC when CBS bought KUTV. Since KUTV is no longer
an o&o, why don't they switch back?

I wonder if KSL-5's agreeing to pick-up "Saturday Night Live" in the Fall had more to do with the network threatening to yank KSL's affiliation if they didn't pick the show up.

(insert "X-Files" theme music here)

;)

I could be wrong, but I think KSL usually clears SNL's prime-time specials.

You are not wrong. You are correct, KSL has regularly run SNL's primetime specials, which makes their explanation somewhat more legit.

I myself could be wrong, but it seems to me that NBC needs KSL much more than KSL needs NBC. What other options would NBC have in Salt Lake City? A gaggle of has-been and never-were stations, each one further out of town than the last.

That's weird....KING 5 in Seattle used to run SNL at 12:05 am due to their local program sketch comedy called, "Almost Live" before it was cancel in 1999.

Except due to time zone differences, KING only delayed SNL a half hour, KSL was proposing a one hour delay, as it normally would start at 10:30 in the mountain time zone. And KING and NBC have been tight for decades, back to the 50's actually.

There's always KTVX 4 that NBC could switch to (Afterall KTVX was a secondary affiliate of NBC to primary ABC many moons ago) which would do nothing but put smiles on Bonneville's face since ABC is a more "Family Friendly" network for KSL (Even if merely Psuedoistically speaking) given it's owner (Disney)

And I don't think Nexstar would care one way or the other if KTVX was affiliated with NBC or ABC as far as I can see

JMO.....

Cheers & 73 ;D

Macon, Georgia just called; their former ABC affiliate would like to remind you that its owner thought their programs weren't family friendly and so dropped the network.
