KSPN 710 Nighttime Interference

I am listening (or trying to) KSPN 710 in Irvine, California at 9:34 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2005. Interference is the worst I have ever heard. I can barely hear KSPN's broadcast. I can clearly hear a Spanish language broadcast in the background every night soon after sunset. Irvine is well within the nighttime primary service area of KSPN. The only Spanish language station I know of on 710 is KMIA in Black Canyon City, Arizona. They are 3.9 kW with the primary lobe directed SSW. Is it possible they are bleeding into the broadcast in southern California? Is there a Mexican station on 710 that could be causing this interference?

There was some talk some time ago of KSPN increasing their nighttime power and relocating their transmitter to Irwindale. Why was their application dropped?

There is a 710 outside Hermosillo, Mexico that comes in very well in the fringe are of LA's 710.

The 710 in AZ is all talk, while the Mexican is music programming. That should make it easy to tell them apart.

In El Cajon, CA, I can usually (if not all the time) hear KSPN fairly well. Yes, sometimes it does drop to 10 or 20 dB under that mexican station, but most of the time it's at least 2 or 3dB above it, usually more like 10 or more.

I live in Santa Clarita, and I actually get some serious bleed from KDWN most nights -- sometimes making KSPN difficult to listen to. I've never heard any other programming on 710 itself.

The KSPN tower site sits on some pretty good land, so if they ever do move to Irwindale they won't have any trouble getting rid of the old KMPC land.

David, your knowledge of the MX stations is amazing -- one question, a bit off topic..

The set of towers just north of Rosarito near the toll road (1D), do you know what site this is? I believe it's 1090? I thought 690 was just south of Rosarito on the free road headed towards Puerto Nuevo..

There are actually three sites in that very close grouping. One, with the smallest towers, is XEKAK - 950, with 15 kw. The other two are XEPRS and XETRA, with the tlller towers being the new-ish 690.

I thought I've heard 950 ID with something like "equis e kam", "cincuenta mil watts de potencia", etc.

btw do you think the reason for 1090's poor (or some people say it is, but it's at least 100uV/m so for me it's fine) signal to east county (El Cajon, etc) is because of a deep null in the directional antenna toward there?

Also, DE, do you by any chance know what level the atmospheric noise floor in the AM BCB is, approximately?

At least the last time I was there (we're talking 2001, here), there were only two stations there, XEPRS and XEKAM, with XETRA having moved to a new site south of Rosarito (which I did not get to!)

I'm glad you clarified this. I tend to see the arrays as a sort of continuum from N to South, ending with XETRA... the fact is, as you point out, that two are above Rosarito and the other is South of it... with some separation between them.

KSPN was unlistenable last night on the road between Point Mugu and Malibu.

This signal used to be reliable here. In the last 5 years or so, it is prone to much more static, and this is on a highway with NO electric lines or houses.

The Spanish-language station buzzing in and out - and it plays music - is a newer irritant.

The game came in just fine on XM, with the choice of the national feed or Rory Markas ... whom I prefer.
Edited by zumahans1 on 10/06/05 02:55 PM.

Hans, Let's Go Angels!!
I didn't have that reception problem last night as I was sitting in Section 522 Upper View :>)

Yes, that Spanaish language station is a HUGE irritant in Orange County (uhhh that's where the Angels play). Once while leaving the Angel Stadium parking lot (!) after a night game turning left onto Orangewood Avenue at one point while making the turn I hit a "null" space (maybe a few feet) but KSPN's signal almost was stepped on by this Spanish language station. I find it hard to believe it's a Mexican station that consistently causes the interference-- I think it's that Phoenix area station and here's whay I believe that. Several years ago when the Angels were on 710 (before they moved to 570 KLAC) their 10kw night signal, while weaker, was OK because there was less interference from distant stations. Then maybe 5 years ago or so the Phoenix area station received the OK from the FCC to operate at night at a "reduced" power of 3,900 watts. The interference started then!! With Angels' owner Arte Moreno's billboard business based in Arizona, too bad he can't buy that station and either make it go dark or move to the X band. Or improve KSPN's night signal. Or go back to KLAC (that might be the best compromise!).

Well, the best way to tell if the station is the Black Canyon City one is to listen. The format there is the LA/fed RadioVisa network, which is all talk. No music except in promos and stuff. Sounds like KFI in Spanish. If it is music, it is Mexico.

Actually one night last week I heard what sounded like play by play of a soccer game with crowd noise. Very confusing. Yes, I haven't heard music on that station lately.... A while ago I DID hear music with a "sounder" sung in Spanish. Is talk a rather new format for Black Canyon City or have they been talk for a long time?

They have been all talk since about February.

1000 watts daytime, 250 watts night ... Doesn't seem likely!
How far is Empalme, Sonora from the LA area anyway?

Right down the coast of the Sea of Cortez. About 500 miles, give or take.

DXers in the US have reported huge north-south pathing in recent weeks, with cases of a Venezualan being heard in TN well over or obliterating WSB, to give one example.

Empalme is a suburb of Guaymas.

GYM-LAX is 606 statute miles (great circle).

GYM-BUR, closer to the KSPN site, 615 st. mi.
