KSTN-FM Transmitter Signed On

Back off at 1:05 PM...

Music suddenly on at 2:40 PM in great stereo...

After another silent period, KSTN-FM is back on again as K-Love, and included a mention of 107.3 (and a request for prayers) at 3:40 PM.

Wow ... they're pushing this as 107.3 in SAN FRANCISCO!!! They just took a caller from Livermore, and the entire conversation was about how K-Love is now "in the Bay Area"...

Is the signal even listenable west of the Oakland Hills, or in the South Bay? I heard a promo for some event at Crissy Field. Yes, definately pushing the Bay Area imaging.

Their ID lists: "107.3 KSTN, Stockton-Modesto-Sacramento-San Jose" .....All from 1 stick???

And i remember when KSTN-FM was still broadcasting in Mono up until the last 10 years. Could never figure out why Knox kept KSTN-FM in Mono for that long? If the station was broadcasting News and Talk, I would understand but they were plaing music. Was Knox that much of a cheapskate or does Spanish Music sound good in Mono? ;)

The Livermore listener call sounds like a shill. Oh well... I guess God was to busy to call in. :p

Wait a minute ... a radio station using a staffer to make a phone call into the station from right down the hall? No way!!! They don't really do that, do they?

(Note to Michael Rivers Kramer: I'm making a joke here.)

That FM has amazing coverage. Grandfathered high power on Mt. Diablo. Here's the official FCC data:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1127498.html

Even more important, there are no 1st adjacent channels on 107.1 or 107.5 running HD. So yeah - it's a Bay Area station, as well as a Stockton stick, with coverage into Sacramento. I can't believe nobody besides EMF jumped on this one when the other sale didn't go through. I guess the big players don't have any money.

Was KSTN-FM on Mt. Diablo in the mid-70's? Back then they used to simulcast KSTN-AM...

As I recall, unless the signal is much better than that era, the FCC map is not very accurate. In San Francisco, you needed needed a good receiver and a good rofftop antenna with a rotor to pull in KSTN-FM back then, and that was for a less-than-local signal. I believe they had (or have) a better signal to the North (toward Sacramento) than the FCC map shows..I seem to recall driving around Sacramento was a crappy car FM tuner back then getting a decent signal from KSTN-FM..

I was curious about the coverage so I ran the Longley Rice map (using the Canadian government application). Valley coverage puts 60 dB easily over Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto and cities like Turlock, Vacaville, Fairfield, etc. Just enough makes it through Sunol pass to put 60 dB over San Jose/Sunnyvale area. As I suspected, nothing decent gets to the rest of the bay due to shadowing form the hills. The station comes in loud and clear on my little clock radio in El Dorado Hills.

The tower is located SE of Diablo's summit at around 2300' elevation.

The FCC map would be more realistic IF the tower was atop Mt. Diablo, which (mostly) has line-of-sight to SF.

Side note: 107.3 processing sounds fantastic!

Ah wow. I stand corrected. My experience is basically Fremont/Newark (where it's solid in a vehicle) across the Dumbarton and down through San Jose. I've never actually tried it North towards San Francisco. Still - it's a very impressive signal.

107.3 doesn't come in well in the Oakland/Berkeley part of the East Bay. Even my car radio, which is pretty decent has trouble keeping the signal driving around the Berkeley/Oakland area. I would believe it's because of the Oakland Hills creating a big signal shadow through most of the East Bay the borders the bay. The transmitter is around ~2,300 feet SE of Mt. Diablo while the Oakland Hills top out at ~1,900 feet and averaging ~1,400 feet east of Oakland and Berkeley.

I have always wondered what would have happened if the likes of Clear Channel had acquired the station, What format would they be doing? Actually I am surprised that none of the Spanish groups like Entravision, Univision or Bustos tried to go after 107.3? Maybe they couldn't afford it?

It certainly seems to me that the only entities able to find ready funds to acquire stations these days are religious in nature: EMF, Immaculate Heart, Family Stations, et al.

Somehow, they're able to build and buy stations with their corporate structure, while for-profit corporations are shedding personnel and facilities like mad.
