I got your assumption, and I turned it back on its face.
It is not absurd to expect a news leader to go wall to wall on a big story.
I found the KITV coverage picked up by CNN to be excellent, and compelling. Fox News's weathercaster was just plain wrong when I sampled them - Hawaii is NOT at the edge of the pacific plate and vulcanism there is not a result of tectonics.
Like many mainlanders, I have relatives in Hawaii and have spent much time there myself. You found it "of particular interest"? So did I, so would others. Where was KTAR? BOTH stories warrant pulling the plug on taped programming, even if it was hour old.
And don't forget, no one at KTAR or KFYI should expect their audience not to keep coming and going. Without a doubt, persons finding out about the quake at various times during the day will start looking for news about it. No one will expect them to stay for long - but they will expect to find the big story when they first dial in.
I'll blast KTAR for not covering the big story correctly, and I won't buy any argument that "it was a Sunday morning and we don't have talk hosts or producers or news staff in then."
Get them in.
