Margaret Dumont died in 1965 at the age of 82. If she had died "very recently, " she'd have been the oldest woman in the world (She was born on October 20, 1882, which would make her 124 this Friday).
But otherwise, you're right. She was quite wealthy for most of her life and was still well-known at the time of her death, if only as the straight-woman to Groucho Marx. Her last public appearance was on ABC-TV's The Hollywood Palace, in March 1965 as, what else, straight-woman to Groucho. She died a few days afterwards.
Yes, and Groucho said that when he saw her last, he felt very sorry for her, and suspected that she bought herself a bouquet of roses for the occasion. They did the show, she died a few days later, and then it was aired a few weeks later.
She was a genuine comic foil, as she proclaimed that she didn't understand the Marx brother's jokes, which made it all the more subversive.
