KTAR Talk

Ok if you had the oppurtunity to plug anyone in the 9-12pm, 1230-4 and 7-10 slot on KTAR who would you pick? Syndicated or local who would you plug in since we all know mcbland and simmon says just isn't what we want to hear.

I think this market's big enough now where all-news 24/7 just might work.

Yeah, all news...working so well in other markets, NOT! Nurse Jeff and I cannot phathom KT'R without Toaster Talkers, so leave Captain Stupor & Ded Simons where they are! If TMISU really want to blow out what remains of the 75+ audience, bring Gaydos down from nights. Kay-Oh-Why will be Top 3, 12+ in no time ;D

WBBM Chicago, KCBS San Francisco, KYW Philly, KOMO Seattle, and TMISU's own WTOP-FM Washington, are all Top-5 stations. WINS NYC and WWJ Detroit are Top-10. Looks like the only major market with all-news radio that isn't doing well ratings-wise is LA.

LA doesn't have all news anymore, unless you count KPCC.

Signal-impaired KFWB is Dodgers and Sunday and Monday Night Football.

KNX is whatever bastard son of newstalk DGH has planned this week.

???

Who or what is DGH? Every time I tune into KNX (at night, of course), I hear news so I'm not sure what you're saying here.

Can't believe that zumahansnews94 and I agree totally on something!

Keith: DGH = David G. Hall, the former (successful at) 64/KFI PD who has
completely dismantled KNX--and the ratings bear this out--in his quest
to apparently gut the news wheel and turn KNX into a KFI clone with
talk segments, computer shows, PMD host with no news background.
What else did I miss (or misconstrue), zumahans?

You can say what you want, but with Glenn Beck off KXAM and Dr. Laura homeless for some time now, either of those would make nice choices for 1-4p or 9-mid. Beck has the highest per capita share of 25-54 year olds of any newstalk show and might be nice for lowering the demos over there. Dr. Laura, as much as people say she's played, is clobbering Hannity and everyone else in El Lay, everyone except KGO in the Bay Area, and does halfway decent on Vegas' wasteland of an AM band. Seems with PBP staying on 620, KTAR-FM could use a cume boost, which she would provide. I know, I know, listeners under 50? Women listening to news/talk? Heaven forbid... if she can be #2 with women 25-54 on an AM station with Rush as her lead-in in SoCal, what could she do on 92.3? And having been tortured by forcing myself to listen to ten minutes of Gaydos last night, I can't see why either of these (free) shows wouldn't be an improvement over that unlistenable crap. Or the Larry King audio fest... the other night, I was treated to four minutes of shuffling sounds over "The Love of Money" while I listened to a video of a day in the life of Donald Trump. Muy fascinante!

Nightime is the only time KNX is even a shadow of itself.

You know what, though? I think DGH has changed course (again). The wizard has beefed up the resources and upped the IQ-level about 40 points on the "talk segments" that KNX replaced news with. Some of them are still goofy, some of them a bit more cerebral.

After getting rid of the capital N newspeople ay KNX, Hall continued his KFI-ification scheme by hiring chripy newsreaders and gutting the field reporter ranks. Afternoon anchors are sent to field anchor from Camp Pendleton - another loser TV gimmick: you can always spot the lowest rated TV station news operation: their anchors are out anchoring at some contrived media event.

Now, he appears in public and says his biggest competitors are NPR stations. the station is suddenly doing "think pieces" and fewer book author junket interviews. The news segments suddenly are more interesting, more relevant.

Of course, KNX at best doesn't even begin to approach its sister KCBS 740 on a slow bay area news day.

But, just when I think KNX might be reliably listenable again, they pull something like last Thursday, when they abandoned their news format during morning drive for in studio guest Weird Al Yankovic for a half hour reminder of why ther Dr. Demento Show isn't on LA radio any more. They even TALKED OVER THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE CBS HOURLY to squeeze in one last Deeeemented segment.

Ha ha. Note to self: double KCRW check.

But, say what you will about KNX, it still comes in on 1070, even in Buckeye.

KTAR has spent this year positioning itself as the "local" station. It would be a huge mistake to put on Laura, Beck, etc during the day after positioning themsevles that way. After what happened with Snowjob I cant imagine them going network again. I can't think of anyone local they should hire. BJ BY JC would never go and there's no way KTAR would hire them.
