KTCV 88.1 Tri-Cities... "Revolution Radio Show"

Due to some unforseen life circumstances, I've ended up in the Tri-Cities for awhile. Always had the bug to do an avant guarde type of show. One that pulls from the 1920's right up to today, blending differing genres into one big blob of broadcasting.

I sent Ed Dailey, guru and all around nice guy at 88.1 an email asking if KTCV allows involvement from the community. Specifically, I was wondering if they would allow someone to come in and produce a show for broadcast. A background check later and a week spent cramming the basics of their automation and I had a slot.

Alas, The Revolution Radio Show was born.

Here's a copy of my playlist for this Sunday. Since I have too much time on my hands (again, unforseen circumstances) I've really had fun programming the complete genre chaos. Please if within earshot, give it a listen Sundays 8-10pm.

I'd like to get some feedback.

With all due respect, your sample playlist involves multiple train wrecks with tempo and genre. Whereas it is on a non-com, I don't expect the TSL will be very high. You may get some curiousity seekers akin to rubber-necking a bad auto accident on I-90, but keeping them with that sort of spread will be tough.

Good luck to you though!

Trainwreck? Be still my beating heart! ;)

I understand that the 'box' of sorts I am blowing up. I am crossing many genres, tempos, styles and attitudes. Someone who just wishes to hear Stairway to Heaven or Dark Side of the Moon wouldn't be able to take it, I agree. They'd be going WTF after 10 minutes and switch to something more familiar.

Your comments about tempo are understood; that is something I am working on. I want to music to flow and with so many genres included, it can be hard. Going from Metal Church to Hank Williams Sr. takes creativity to pull it off. The show that airs the second week of January I will post its playlist.

I know I'm genre busting in a way that makes a commerical programmer look and laugh. I'm not changing the world either, just having a lot of fun. Radio has become so sterile that focus groups and corporations drive the whole thing. It's not about music anymore. It's fun for me to be about the music and I'm grateful for getting to do this.

Regards.

You kicked your show off with "Achilles last stand" ! my favorite Led Zeppelin song. ;D That alone would have hooked me Stephanie. And back announcing and engaging mic breaks would have kept me hooked. I grinned when I saw Suicidal Tendencies in your playlist. Will you play "Institutionalized" for me this coming Sunday? :)

I hope to be on air at KTCV soon. Maybe on Sunday a few hours before or after your shift. I MISS doing radio. It is in my blood.

Sundays may be best for me considering my current work schedule. I will hopefully meet with Ed Dailey for a second time. It's been over a year since I first met with him.
He didn't seem to be enthusiastic about taking me on board during our first meeting. He simply said I could take the Adult radio course at no charge when it was available.

I dj'd for 16 years at WHUS, the University of Connecticut. 16 years of 1-3 shows a week. 16 years of friends and memories and magical moments on-air. I have absolutely no interest in commercial radio. It is a for profit business only and is an entirely different beast from college or high school radio. I am wary of those entrenched in commercial radio. I think their experience and perception of music has been compromised deeply. To the point where aplaylist such as yours is viewed as a "train wreck" WTF is that!? Lol. If your playlist is a train wreck then my last few in 2008 are freaking natural disasters.

I left Connecticut for Portland,Oregon in January 2008. Here is one of my playlists from 2007. A beautiful smoldering screeching train wreck :p

new airshift is Thursday nights from 10-12 91.7fm or whus.org got it?
that's every Thursday night from 10 'til midnight.which is a sweet airshift cuz the FCC allows songs with curses after 10 at night.
it's also sweet cuz the following day is Friday.Imagine if I was on air Monday or Tuesday night-ugh.

So my 1st show at this time was freaking awesome.I brought in my 500 lock groove lp and used it often for segues/transitions and mixing.
The 1st segue from Joel's(the dj on from 8-10)final song into my 1st cut(a lock groove) was silky smooth and I didn't even know it would be.it just happened:) then I hit everyone with LUBRICATED GOAT's "Can't Belive We're Really Making Love" from their vinyl lp-"Plays the Devil's Music" Lol-"Feel my penis burning inside you baby. Can't believe we're really making love.Oh,c'mon.Feel my penis burning inside you baby..."
Sikk sikk song and it's done in a doo wop kinda lounge way.Soo awesome and subversive.

Then I rolled the CUMSHOTS cut "Halo of Horns" (How could I not-lol)
Then a lock groove and mik break and shoutout to Emily followed by
CHEAP TRICK's "Gonna Raise Hell" and all 9 minutes of it too!
then another mic break/lock groove and I announced my favorite summer song-THUSTON MOORE's "Psychic Hearts"
"Just remember-one thing is true. I will always love you. I will always love you."
followed by my 2 favorite songs released this spring-
white like heaven GOWNSthe sinking belle SUNN O)))/BORISthen
"sugar' GOWNS
a mic break/lock groove along with "Speed" from CHOP SHOP's dbl 10" vinyl and the remaining cuts were....

I must admit that I don't knowk a lot of the harder-edged artists you are playing (not my forte). But I've experimented, and managed, several eclectic music shows and stations (non-comm, of course) over the years, and it's true that you can get away with a lot of variety - as long as the segues work. The "trainwreck" term often refers to stuff that doesn't blend very well. Like eating pickles right after chocolate cake.
So you have to use your voice to "pull me in" as a listener from time to time (and not just give station IDs and slogans) -- and as the host, be the force that makes the adventure work for your listeners, without making them get dizzy from all the genre-busting.
I've found that a well-intentioned "standards" from the likes of a Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and even the Boswell Sisters can have a nice attention-getting effect - but make it work in the context of what you're playing before and after it, too. Should be stuff that has some real legs to it. I think playing Pat Boone, however, might be a little too much in a rock format.
Good luck, and congrats on your persistence and getting a slot on the air.

Update on this due to some shifts in sound and target. Gone is the deconstructing radio, while it was fun, it was not something long term or audience friendly.

Thus, I moved the show to a AAA presentation and approach. There is no station anywhere near AAA in the Tri-Cities. Making The Revolution Radio Show a properly formatted show was the right call and was in the best interest of an unserved audience, KTCV (since they are the only station in town off the beaten path - it gives them to chance to draw in someone new) and helped me hone a real world methodology.

Below will be the most current playlist.

Best regards to all.

No no no.

There was at the very least,  ONE person who absolutely appreciated what you were doing.

What radio station ever plays "Achilles Last Stand" or a cut from the Suicidal Tendencies within a span of two hours?

Maybe that one individual who was listening that evening, and a few others, tuned in with anticipation the next Sunday evening to hear what you would roll.

Maybe they were secretly hoping you'd spin another Zeppelin cut rarely if ever played. "Down by the Seaside" or "Ten Years Gone" or "Carouselramba"(sic). Maybe they were hoping to hear more old school SoCal punk ala the Suicidal Tendencies or maybe a cut from the Spanglish 101 compilation of Mexican metal, indie and punk bands.

Maybe they loved the mix because it WAS NOT "properly formatted".

My approach to radio is that there will be at least one person out there who will be hit hard by at least one thing they hear during my show. Hit hard in a good way.

And people have been. And that brings me joy. Because I love sharing music. Especially music that is NOT heard ever on mainstream and commercial radio.

Hi Spiral

I really appreciate your kind comments. Deconstructing radio is fun, there is no doubt. Keeping the listener wondering what is coming next is something almost unheard of in radio today. Many industry vets groaned and shuttered when they saw the original playlist upthread. It goes against so much of what radio is today. The early mission of the show - to be avant guard with carefully crafted chaos was my little way of doing something that was insanely out of the box.

All that said, after you get going and you look around you and feel things out, you get a better sense of what comes next. I had that moment in Mid-December. I asked myself, 'I have two hours on a 3500w station, what could I be doing better?' Avant guard style carefully crafted chaos is fun, but long term it wasn't there. Over the last few years, while I was living in Spokane I grew to love Triple A. I put up with the occasional choppy signal from KPND because the format was so rich, interesting and fantastic. It's what drew me to radio to be begin with: being forward thinking.

I started at KTCV with the idea of just doing my own brand of uniqueness for two hours. I had no further designs, ideas or future for it. It was just a diversion. As December rolled along, I started to realize my original love for good radio again. I was trained in radio broadcasting and did some work in the classic rock format before I shifted to television in the 1990s. I got out of radio because I didn't find a place for me. I couldn't live in the same focus group tested 400 songs world.

Almost 20 years after I got my radio broadcast technical degree I found a place for me: AAA. It's the format that I was searching for to be happy in. I also want to make a career in the format. I'm using the opportunity at KTCV to hone a methodology and springboard back into commerical radio, specifically AAA.

It's a win for KTCV as well with me doing AAA. They are fairly eclectic in their regular rock format. AAA gives them a chance to bring new people on board and bring a taste of a format that maybe one day will be commercially broadcast in this market. God knows, its long overdue. How many classic rockers are in this town? I rest my case.

I feel ya on your programming philosophy. In my heart, I'm still that rebel. Maybe one day I can blaze that carefully crafted chaos again. My hat today though, is in the ring long term with AAA. I wish I'd found the format 20 years ago.

I love sharing music too. The world of AAA is the best way to be forward thinking and share a lot of cool stuff and get paid for it. :)

Best to you,
Stephanie

Hey Stephanie, I was hoping you could help me find a song. It played around 9:07-9:09 AM today after "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum and just before "You Were Right" by Oh no! Oh my!.

I noticed that someone requested you play "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies...and it just ended up on air about an hour ago, two songs before the song I'm looking for. I don't know if you had a hand in this, but you may just know more about 88.1's playlist than me even if you didn't. I found a couple websites that show a playlist for 88.1, but they only get about two thirds of the songs, and they always miss the ones I like. Do you know what song I am talking about, or do you know how I can get my hands on a complete playlist? Thanks in advance, I know this post is a little random.

Hello BP,

For now there is no complete playlist accessible to the general public. As close as you are going to get is:

http://www.yes.com/#KTCV

As you have run into, it's incomplete and occasionally reports the incorrect song.

I'll make a note to myself when I go in to upload my music on Tuesday, I'll look into the logs and see if I can find it.

Regards.

At 9:08:56 Steve Palmer Band's "Apparition" played.

It is the cut immediately after "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum.

Hope that's what ya needed.
Best to ya,

Yes! The Youtube video has 140 views, I never would have found that. Thank you so much! I love his voice in the chorus. How on Earth did you find this out? Just insider info at the station?

Hi BP,

I was sitting in the main studio of KTCV working directly with the station's automation when I posted that prior message. Just a couple clicks is all it took. Insider info? No, not really. In doing my own show I have access to the system including the previously played logs. Just a question of looking at them.

Glad I was able to help you.

Regards.

I've not visited this thread in a while.

A couple things. First, the show is now on KWCW 90.5 in Walla Walla. I drive over and do it live unlike the KTCV version of the show which is run as a voicetracked Nexgen event. KWCW has no automation which is really a throwback. I've taken to building my segments in Adobe Audition and putting them on CD. That leaves me 2 CDs for the full 2 hrs of programming, with 15 - 20 minute tracks. Track ends, open mic announce then hit play on the CD player as I go into the next segment with another 15-20 minute self contained segment.

So far at KWCW, I've been nailed by the building fire alarm going off (they were testing - with no warning) while I was back announcing. Felt like Guerilla radio fighting the fire alarm with a live mic and trying cleanly toss out.

The show is building an audience. I'm pleasantly surprised. Moving AAA was the right decision. It definitely fills a niche in the market. KEYW 98.3 has incorporated more of the Click concept into their sound, so they are touching into stuff I have been playing.

I just bought an RE 320 EV Mic with all the fixings and a Yamaha MG82cx mixer with the intention of building and voicing the show here to offer it up to other stations. This is a grand experiment. Ed Dailey, who does syndicates his own Legends of Country and runs his show live on KORD is helping me out.

It's kind of exciting times.

Thought I'd give an update on things since I'm poking around.

First item, the show is no longer on KTCV 88.1. Due to some direction changes at KTCV, all specialty shows have been eliminated, including mine.

Second, I'm still on KWCW 90.5 in Walla Walla. Doing the show Monday mornings during the drive. KWCW streams at KWCW.net. I start the KWCW fall schedule on Monday morning.

Third, still podcasting and shopping the show out. A few great bites a few not so great. So it goes.

Regards,
Stephanie

Another update since there are things to report.

First item, the show will be returning to KTCV 88.1/Kennewick starting next month. This came about a couple weeks ago. It was a pleasant surprise. The OM is a great guy who believes in me and really likes the show. Originally, KTCV was going to go in a different direction. They reevaluated that decision and moved more in a more mainstream/modern rock sound. The OM is picking the show back up because he wants to get the AAA niche until someone thinks outside the box and does it commerically here. To my knowledge, I'll be the only non-student produced show that'll be airing on KTCV.

The show will be produced entirely at home via Adobe Audition similar to what I do with KWCW. KWCW though, I crack the mic live. For KTCV, everything will be prebuilt and dumped into NexGen as segments. I have a functional production computer and the results with the Elecro Voice RE320 mic are ok.

There have been other things I continue to work on. Meetings with local Operations Managers et cetera. One day perhaps something will come out of those those. It's in a rather odd phase right now with New Northwest Broadcasters still being in limbo due to the FCC spike of the Townsquare deal.

As a wise man once said, for the moment... "that's all folks!" ;)

Edit: If anyone is interested in listening to the KWCW broadcast for now. The show is on Facebook with podcasts. You can find it here:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Revolution-Radio-Show/192696534075007

Some changes will be in store over the next few months. New imaging etc.

I'd love anyone's feedback!

Update:

11/20/11 The Revolution Radio Show returns to KTCV at it's scheduled time of 7:00pm every Sunday. We're excited to be back on in our home market.

I'm in talks with a Western Washington station, one in Oregon and another Eastern Washington station.

In January, I'll be consolidating the show to a syndicated version across the board. After the first of the year, the show could very well be on 4 or 5 stations.

It's not a money making deal, for now, just doing it out of the love of radio.

Regards.

Update January 2012:

Well, sometimes a restart works out, sometimes it doesn't. As of the second week of December and 3 weeks of returning to KTCV, The Revolution Radio Show is permanent hiatus from KTCV/88.1 Kennewick, WA and on termporary hiatus from KWCW/ Walla Walla, WA.

In regards to the short return and sudden departure from KTCV, all I can say publicly that when politics overrides broadcasting ethos, it's time politely bow out. Which I did.

I will continue in this downtime upload occasional podcasts. Once I get resettled and moving foward in other elements of life, I will return in pushing the little show that's not done for money, but just to do it and give markets that don't have a quirky AAA 3 hour show a chance for something different.

:)
