ktfm

KTFM or 104.1 would be great as an alternative station. KTFM would cover San Antonio and the surrounding areas well, and 104.1 covers San Antonio and cities to the south.

Why hasn't San Antonio ever had a rock alternative format? You have a lot of colleges in the Alamo City, as well as a strong military presence, two factors I think would build a strong case for bringing in an alternative format.

On another note, how about that 104.1 tower? When I drive to Laredo, I can pick it up all the way to Encinal, which is about 30 minutes north of Laredo. Pretty friggin' strong signal.

Q96 KSAQ was New Wave/Alternative back in the 80's.

104.1- hasn't had a descent format to have a real impact in SA.

Here's something BMP should be looking at, how is it that 95.7 has a weaker signal than 94.1 and 104.1 and yet, 95.7 has better numbers than both 94.1 & 104.1. Granted, 94.1 recent music adjustment will likely bring them higher numbers. But prior to that, this should have been an eye opener.
 
Are you referring to the WHFS in Annapolis, MD? I used to listen to them way back in 83/84 when I lived and worked in Annapolis. At that time, they were the only station that played obscure and alternative music, as well as different cuts from regular artists. I can't stand listening to the same few songs from those corporate approved artists.
 
Yes...and WHFS also threw some amazing concert/parties that drew lots of new folks to new music live.

The WHFStivals were legendary.

Oddly enough even though they were geared towards 18-24 year olds and college kids they became popular family events.

I do not like the way they have CJ talking like AOR/AC style over really extended intros almost every song.

I keep waiting for the post and it never comes....LOL too /wierd.

Wait, What? When? They were AC from '84 to the time Inner City took them in '87.
Then they were KSJL, with an AC/urban format. Maybe I missed something.

Inner City took them CHR almost immediately. They made some changes to their playlist in '90 that made them resemble an alternative station, but they still reported to the trades as a CHR. KISS switched to oldies in July or August of '90, and KSAQ went from CHR/alternative to AOR as "96 Rock" in '91. That lasted about 2 years. After KISS went back to AOR, KSAQ became urban AC KSJL until they switched to CHR "Mix 96" in '98.
 
Thanks Kent. To be honest, I quit listening after C-W Wireless sold them to the Suttons.
I do remember Billy Thorman programming 96 ROCK, with Joe Anthony on the staff... More heavy metal than AOR, in my view. I get the formats on 96.1 MIXed up.
Personally, I wish the Penningtons had never sold KMFM.
And I wish KTFM was still the clever, eclectic station Trigger Black programmed in the mid-70s.
 
It's safe to say the battle between KTFM and Mix 96 is heating up as the year progresses. Latest adds on KTFM- Pitbull, Usher, Ne-yo and other Rhythmic tracks. ;D
 
talked to a friend of mine over the weekend who works for border. he said 'everybody knows ktfm is a joke even in our own group.' and nobody wants to sell it and the ratings continue to go down even when they thought they couldn't go any lower. not my words but his. so don't shoot the messenger. personally i think ktfm talent sounds great lately.

The current problem with KTFM is that want to keep the Hot AC format but at the same time play the Hits. This type format wont work. KTFM needs get it together and pick a format.

I still say drop the Hot AC artist and go all out with Top 40. San Antonio is large enough to support two Top 40 stations. Even with that being said, Mix sounds smokin HOT!!! A good mix of Pop, Hip Hop/R&B and Dance.
 
Why don't they daypart the music like the old shcool Top 40s? Broad appeal in morning drive, AC during the work day, and younger driven when the kids get out of school and into the night.

dayparting? This might have work back in the 80's but not in today's times.
 
Dayparting is still used in today's times...I think you are referring to Block Formating which is older and more obvious to the listener.

Dayparting is more subtle...and is the art of music selection. Which has been replaced by many stations just letting the computer rotate music willy nilly and hit print on the sheets...oh wait...they don't even print out the music logs anymore with BDS and all...LOL

Ridiculous.
 
I know for a fact that Mix dayparts.

Any PD that lets the computer schedule the music needs to be fired. The automation is there as a reference in my opinion.
 
It is being advertised heavily on TV. I'm seeing commercials in prime time that emphasize the music, with a passing mention of the talent. That would seem to imply that BMP believes potential audience is unaware of the music being played there.
 
Iphone and Google/Android phones have I heart Radio app that allows cellphone/PDA listening to radio stations and radio shows from all over the country on your phone.
