KTHT 97.1 Is Cox Broke???

What is the deal with KTHT? It is the worst programmed Classic Country station I have ever heard. The play list has to be less than 200 songs, and it sounds like someone has a Johnny Cash fixation? They have one DJ in the morning then the rest of the day its automated. This station could be SOOO much better! They need to open up the play list. If Cox needs some tips on how to program Classic Country, they need to listen to KKUS in Tyler or 650 WSM in Nashville.

Songs that need to be shelved permanently on KTHT
Johnny and June Cash- Jackson
Johnny Cash-Boy Named Sue
The Judds- Momma He's Crazy
Emmy Lou Harris- Crazy
Screachy Loud Screaming Version of Bonnie Tyler's It's A Heartache

Please Tell me if Im wrong, but I cant listen to this station anymore its so bad!

There are so many amazing artists that could be covered

Don't expect it to change. Look at Cox sibling KHPT--another tiny playlist repeated ad nauseum, and that's been going on for a decade.

I agree with most of you. There is not much "classic country" here. Sorry but Olivia Newton John and John Denver are not classic country to me. It needs more Haggard, Jones, etc.

We're talking about Cox here. Look at B98.5 and The River in Atlanta.

These people have some awful stations with tiny (and many times odd) playlists.

Every time I go to 97.1 I hear Eddie Rabbitt, Crystal Gale or Alabama. So I stopped going.
Everytime I tune in it is either Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton or Johnny Cash...all these artists are great...but it seems they only play a couple of songs from a limited list of artists...they need to dig out the old KIKK FM playlists and reprogram...they will find that the "Legends" playlist could be endless!!

I still love the "New 93Q" moniker that Cox uses for KKBQ. C'mon Cox, does anyone under the age of 35 even remember 93Q as a top 40? It's been a country station for almost 20 years now! At least they removed the "New" tag off of The Point after 8 years of 80's music. I kind of wonder how long The Eagle will remain new?

It's pretty much the same with all their markets and all music genres. I feel exactly the same about their classic rocker here in Tampa Bay. :(

I haven't listened to 97.1 in a very long time for this very reason. And, it's a shame; because it could be so much better of a radio station than it is. When they first put that format on; they had a wide-open playlist. So, you know they have the music on file. But they just settle for being mediocre. I started listening to KVST. It isn't all legends; but it comes closer that 97.1 ever will.

I turned 30 about a month ago and I vaguely remember Q Morning Zoo days with John Lander. I don't know if it was them or Stevens and Pruett always referring "97 Crock"

That was back in the day when KTRH was a "News" Station with a news staff and you had "Moby in the mornings" on 97 rock, Lander with Q-Zoo and S&P on Rock 101 to choose for morning shows. Pretty tuff choice for me so I rotated morning shows each day because they all were good.

poops

You know what really gets old? Frustrated ex radio or part time radio peeps going off on Cox! Maybe its too much fun to armchair quarterback or maybe it feels to irresistible to bust on the bad corporate radio Gods like Bob Neil, but, God all Mighty, can we MOVE ON!?! This subject has been addressed again and again for 10 years regarding KHPT, Cox, The Eagle, the sage programming style/ OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK. NEXT. Take a programming job in corporate broadcasting...then check back into this radio board, and tell us all about how programming works.

So, Cabanaboy, Is Cox broke. I'm broke! Will you buy me a drink?

The purpose of these posts IS to go on and on.

jhon lander worked in philly @ the old eagle 106

yup Cox......just sell to Cumulus already and exit the market please? If you have to pick your poison, I would choose them. We could end up with a lineup like this:
KKBQ (93Q) country with classic country mixed in
KGLK (The Eagle) Classic Rock (yeah they say classic hits, but who are they kidding)
KRBE (104 KRBE) Adult CHR
KTHT (ESPN 97.1) Sports
KHQR (106.9 Houston's Quality Rock) AAA

and spin off 97.5 and 103.7

Not going to happen, as Cumulus is at a defacto market cap due to it's investor groups' ownership shares in Clear Channel and Univision. This is why CC had to sell off KHMX and KLOL.

I agree that a market shakeup would be nice, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for one.
