Tucson KTKT tower site vandalized

990 KTKT was granted an STA to operate at reduced power due to vandalism to the ATU for two of it's three tower array. One ATU is a complete loss, while the second is being assessed. In the meantime they will operate ND from one tower at 10% daytime (1 KW) and 25% nighttime (123 watts).

That explains why I haven't been able to hear their signal during daylight hours in Phoenix like I have in the past. I'm assuming the thieves wanted the copper wiring?

Not just wiring. An ATU (Antenna Tuning Unit) is basically a metal box, often copper lined, that has a combination of copper coils and capacitors that tune the transmitter output to the tower. In addition,, there is copper coaxial cable from the transmitter to the towers and a big copper strap or tube that connects the ATU to the tower.
