KTPI

Since I am not in the high desert and cannot tune in this Clear Channel station... what is going on with the station?!?
I listen to it via streaming from time to time and wonder what Clear Channel is contemplating doing with it...

It might switch to a simulcast of KYSR.. :-\

Clear has no doubt decided that simulcasting the Antilope Valley stations with the LA ones is more beneficial than selling to the loacal market. Since Lancaster n/ Palmdale is inside the LA market, any numbers generated there firectly benefit the LA stations. With a point in LA worth around $10,000,000 a couple of thenths of a point added to an LA station is worth several million and could change a station's rank postion.

As the Antilope Valley market is increasingly a bedroom community to LA, this makes economic sense althought it certainly removes even more chances of local service to the area. On the other hand, with the market increaswingly populated by chain stores there is likely not much business there to sustain local radio.

Bob Adelman is now similcasting Clear Ch.'s KGB on his 100.9 Edwards for the A.V.now with the KGBB calls. Adelman and George Chambers built KTPI on a shoestring back in the early 80's, purchased 1340 and 97.7, spinning that FM off to 610 and then later selling 1340 and KTPI.

KTPI 103.1 is licensed to serve the City of Tehachapi; since Clear Channel has aimed its signal away from Tehachapi KTPI has a less than city grade signal in many parts of Tehachapi now, 100.1 also licensed to Tehachapi and located at the same site has little to no signal in Tehachapi, yet has a near city grade in Lancaster 30 miles to the south. Same is true for 97.7 licensed to Mojave; at the Motel 6 in Mojave 97.7 is hard to receive with a good radio yet 103.9 at the same site is city grade. Both 97.7 and the co located 103.9 have to protect Bakersfield stations on the same frequencies, mountains directly to the west do an outstanding job keeping any signal going west, the null is so tight three miles to the west the signals are gone!
An engineer friend of mine took some measurements in Mojave and Tehachapi, and has determined a few mega fines might be in order for a few rules violations. Another engineer (from CBS) who came up with the same finds has since passed away, lucky for Clear Channel as he was going to do something about it. His words “92.7 Thousand Oaks went though a major transmitter relocation projects for a lot less of a breech of the rules”
One day corporate greed will catch up and they will all have to relocate their stations back to he city of license, and do the unthinkable; return to serving in the public interest. The folks in Tehachapi are very unhappy about the changes and might do something about it, keep in mind in many parts of Tehachapi there are no FM signal period no matter what antenna you use.

I meant KGBB is at 103.9. 100.9 along with 104.9 are Adelman's other FM's.
I knew what you meant! Jon, "You know your AV radio history" BOB FM was BOB on Sunday, While I live in the 93536 Zip Code I can't get zip from that transmitter site. 97.7 and 103.9 are Shafter & Taft here, I have to drive into the 93535 Zip to hear BOB. KTPI legend Chris Compton is now running KFXM-LP Lancaster, the 100 watt Oldies Station with a really big signal.
BoB FM is programmed from the Adelman Broadcasting center located at 50th & M in Quartz Hill, drive between the library and his building and you will see the 103.9 STL ant. a far cry from North Edwards the city of license.

Are you folks saying that by moving KTPI's signal from 103.1 to 97.7 that such a move would immediately violate the FCC requirement that a station's 'city of license' matches its coverage area?

If KTPI at 97.7 cannot be heard in Tehachapi, am I correct in assuming that they can't change their top-of-the-hour ID to 97.7 KTPI/Quartz Hill/Palmdale or whatever?

97.7 would have to ID itself as a Mojave station as it does now, 103,1 would have a legal ID of Tehachapi buried somewhere in the middle of a song as they use to with KVVS 97.7.
A likely violaton would come from not having a listenable signal over the COL. While camping last summer at Brite Lake, Tehachapi, I could only hear a faint signal from 100.1 and only slightly better signal with 103.1. No it was not the radio as I was able to hear 98.1 from Barstow without a problem.

I've never been to Tehachapi, but I know that 100.1 FM has a real good signal up at Mountain High near Wrightwood. In fact, they are there every weekend promoting the station at mountain high......I always stop by the booth and try to get t-shirts and station swag......which is interesting since I think most of the skiiers and boarders are from the IE and greater LA area. Nonetheless, at least the AV has a few local stations like 100.1 left considering what CC is doing with theirs. The irony is that when I told the 100.1 DJ at Mtn High that we need a rock station in LA, he said they would love to bring their station to a LA signal. But in fact, the opposite is happening....

I want to add....it would be a shame if KYSR's simulcast (if that happens) to the AV would end up hurting 100.1 The Edge.

Liners are now 97.7 KTPI, simulcast with 103.1 should end soon. It would have made more since to flip 103.1 to spanish; as the area only has one other spanish station on 106.9 with a poor signal over the valley. Even home builders have adoted to the rapid increase in the hispanic population with 7 bedroom houses.

KTPI yes would have to change there IDer. Usually the first city that they announce is the city where the transmitter is licensed to. Just like here in Victorville Kat Country 100.7 transmitter is located in Victorville but at the old George Air Force Base so Kat Country Id's there station as KATJ FM George, Victorville, Apple Valley.
