KTPI 103.1 is licensed to serve the City of Tehachapi; since Clear Channel has aimed its signal away from Tehachapi KTPI has a less than city grade signal in many parts of Tehachapi now, 100.1 also licensed to Tehachapi and located at the same site has little to no signal in Tehachapi, yet has a near city grade in Lancaster 30 miles to the south. Same is true for 97.7 licensed to Mojave; at the Motel 6 in Mojave 97.7 is hard to receive with a good radio yet 103.9 at the same site is city grade. Both 97.7 and the co located 103.9 have to protect Bakersfield stations on the same frequencies, mountains directly to the west do an outstanding job keeping any signal going west, the null is so tight three miles to the west the signals are gone!
An engineer friend of mine took some measurements in Mojave and Tehachapi, and has determined a few mega fines might be in order for a few rules violations. Another engineer (from CBS) who came up with the same finds has since passed away, lucky for Clear Channel as he was going to do something about it. His words “92.7 Thousand Oaks went though a major transmitter relocation projects for a lot less of a breech of the rules”
One day corporate greed will catch up and they will all have to relocate their stations back to he city of license, and do the unthinkable; return to serving in the public interest. The folks in Tehachapi are very unhappy about the changes and might do something about it, keep in mind in many parts of Tehachapi there are no FM signal period no matter what antenna you use.
