KTU FAIL

Arguably one of the biggest artist of their rhythmic ac format and KTU chooses to only play two Donna Summer song in the last two hours. Meanwhile Lite FM plays a whole hour of Donna Summer Music. This is KTU after all...the call letters that were first known under Disco 92. and with an audience that grew up in that era along with the original station.

I'm just glad they acknowledged her. I know she's part of their heritage, but since Donna Summer is not part of their current format, they really didn't have to do anything beyond a passing mention. This is probably the first time in years that they've played ANY Donna Summer.

And maybe they have something bigger planned for later in the day. CBS-FM (the only other station besides Lite that gives Summer regular airplay) didn't jump to do an hour tribute immediately, but will be doing so in the 5 PM and 9 PM hours.

And yet there are those that consider KTU to be a dance station. Their playlist is not much different from Z100 except for an occasional song from the 80's and those have become very few and in between their chr hits. I still think KTU should be the station to do a tribute but this is not the radio I grew up with.

Besides WKTU, what about WBLS not playing a set of Donna Summer's songs..

May prayers go out to the Summer's family.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

It's the Studio 54 Channel that is taking listener calls at the current time on the passing of Donna Summer today at the age of 63. Come on New York Radio it's time to step it up!

KTU is not like it used to be :-( I loved the sat nights with Joe Causi then. Times change, sad to say, wcbsfm is doing tributes to her. :)

Those that listen to WKTU now most likely didn't grow up with Disco 92. A 35 year old woman or man has little or no recollection of the original WKTU, as they were 7 when it flipped to K-Rock.

I figured someone was going to make that argument. For the record,I am in my mid 30's and though I didn't grow up on her music she still made a huge impact with the dance crowd. Those of us at least 30 and older. But it makes sense that WCBS would do the tribute(even though KTU is # 2 with the 25-54 crowd) as the KTU heritage is just folklore at this point.

Broadway Bill Lee from the days of KTU did a great tribute on wcbsfm today :) Joe Causi not in tonight, but I am sure he will say something tomorrow. Joe did sat nights 70's on KTU and does it now on Wcbsfm :) I remember those days.

On the FM dial. An emergency focus group was called in. A quick callout was done, and voicetracks were recut. Then... corporate had to approve the song(s) that could be played. It was run up the chain to the regional programmer, and then approved by the hired consultant. Did I miss someone that wasn't on the memo.

FAIL? I wouldn't say that. KTU has done what every station, every format in every market should do. They program to their demographic. And do quite well with that I might add. For those that were in their mid 30's back in the 70's and 80's, you have a different radio station now, as KTU is still a station for the NOW mid 30's person. Don't be fooled by the idea that a format targeting 25-54 is aimed at the upper end of that 54 age group, nor are they aimed at the 25 year old lower end. I imagine that KTU leans more female friendly. With that in mind, they are the best sounding female leaning middle of the 25-54 demo in America. I would venture to say that MOST mid 30's females in the New York market like Usher, LMFAO, Rihanna, Adele and the like. They may be interested slightly that Donna Summer has passed, but more of a passing thought to them. Just a fact of time, you are talking about an artist from a time when they were in diapers. The biggest problem in radio currently and moving forward? People who try to constantly bring it back to "their" good ole days. Imagine if you grew up on Z100, you are 45 and they still played Bon Jovi? FAIL. It's the same situation here with KTU. NOTE-as KTU has become more and more hit driven playing mostly songs that are familiar to the average person, their ratings have soared.

When Michael Jackson died, KTU played all Michael Jackson songs for the entire weekend. Same thing with Whitney Houston. Why didn't KTU do something similar today?

Even Pulse 87 played 5 Donna Summer songs in a row, despite always making fun of disco.

I'd expect a tribute from WEBE 108 on Saturday night on its disco specialty show.

First of all,you have taken my words out of context. I said KTU fail because it did not pay any tribute so far at least other than playing two songs early this afternoon.

Second- KTU is a heritage station regardless of how they have skew musically in the last year or so. This is not some Clear Channel clone in any small town USA. Many listeners tuning in remember the 92 KTU days and are fond of Donna Summer. KTU was promoting Disco concerts up until last year so that should be indicative of what big portion of their audience musical taste still are even if they have gone more chr hits.

Which leads me to say again that they should not be billed as a rhythmic ac since it seems like more than 90% of their playlists is chr driven.

One last thing,Donna Summer had several big hits in the 80's on chr. The last one being "This time I know it's for real" in 89. So if they can do tributes to MJ and Whitney then Donna Summer should get one too.

When Michael Jackson died, KTU played all Michael Jackson songs for the entire weekend. Same thing with Whitney Houston. Why didn't KTU do something similar today?

I may start a firestorm when I say this, but I don't think Donna Summer was on the same level as MJ or Whitney Houston. She was a disco artist. MJ was much more than that (musically speaking) and Whitney Houston was enormous for 20 or so years.

Whitney was in a league of her own when it came to records sales, fantastic record sales to say the very least. But I liked Donna just as much. You will be missed Donna and Whitney bless you both!

You have to wonder how KISS-FM would have responded to Donna Summer's death.

And yes, I do think it's funny that two major urban music artists (Summer and Adam Yauch of The Beastie Boys) passed away within weeks of KISS-FM signing off the air.
