KTU'S Judy Torres

If that's true, it certainly answers why they did that website "KTU's Dance Nation".

I was always wondering why 'KTU would DO such a site like that if they had no intention of going into "Pulse" territory! Makes perfect sense now.

Yea, but the questions are will KTU actually spin all these tracks listed on dance nation come for this time slot they "gonna do"? And if this shall happen, which on-air personality they gonna place for "your dance nation for new dance music?" If KTU looks at Pulse as "not a threat" then whats up with the dance nation page? To be honest, this could pass for an HD-3 channel, that is if Country HD-2 is still on the air.

And you know what? Anything is possible here.

Perhaps 'KTU is "testing the waters" again, the same way they did a 3:00 show during Broadway Bill Lee's final days on the station back in 2006 when they covered a year in music and for some reason "Margaritaville" (yep, the Jimmy Buffett version) aired.

I don't see 'KTU flipping back to what it was prior to 2006, but I do sense that if any of these tracks being played on a Sunday night gets some sort of positive review, perhaps one or two will make the cut.

WOW!! :) I'm no "dance expert", BUT...dig on ANYBODY who can dance up a Beyonce track and make it sound funky fly fresh!! :)

Currently on KTU: Tainted Love

Have I EVER heard that song on Pulse 87? NO!

Where's the current dance show?

I wish KTU had a dance mixshow like 'FLZ in Tampa or KC101 or Kiss 95.7 in Connecticut. Why won't that work on KTU or Z100 if it works on those stations?

Z100 had a dance mixshow called "Planet Z" about 8 or 9 years ago they had the best remixes and dance hits KTU didnt have on their mixshows back then, riddler was one of their mixshow dj's. They pulled the plug on planet z because some jock that night said that, btw dont quote me i may be off a little, said "there isnt people that like dance music in the area." But since dance is getting noticed now and with Pulse in the area, (here comes the "Pulse is not the cause" replies) I say that CC should bring back Planet Z, and what a better time to do it now. Spinbad was ok mixing it up at night and broadcasting from webster hall, (dont know if he's still on or they cut his slot) but it wasnt the same as Planet Z. I have several recordings of Planet Z, of course on a casette, some from DJ Rich (Riddler) and Stevie Zaccone.

Andrea.....I am doing this for your own good! I gotta save you!

1985 wants back "funky fly fresh!" and you should give it to them so that it can be buried!!! :D

You can borrow "off the hook" ;)

Just what we need more remixes of pop songs passing as dance music.Garbage.

Morpheux, I think I'm going to shock you (I know Brett - Dancerev889 will probably faint on the floor upon me saying this).....but here goes.

Dance remixes of pop tracks are necessary.

Yeah, I just said that! But having said that, I have to think of the "casual" dance music fan....not the "core" like myself, yourself, d21 and others.

The reality is, the casual fan needs some sort of familiarity with the music somehow. They may not jump high and mighty to an Ercola, Nicola Fasano or a Kaskade being that those listeners may have never heard of them, but a dance remix of Beyoncé? That will work. And it's those pop remixes that can eventually hook those sometime listeners into a more edgy sound down the road with unfamiliar artists (in their mindset) that come out with slamming tracks on their own merit.

The main trick to those pop remixes is simple....they have to be its "own track".

In the past, a dance remix of a pop song might have been a sped up version of a track, but nothing unique about it. As of late though, the remixers have become more front and center and in a way given a carte blanché to re-interpret a track. "Single Ladies" by Beyoncé is perfect proof of that. In itself, a nice, cute, dancy R&B track. But what remixer Dave Audé did to it was AMAZING! The beats per minute were sped up and the track was given a totally different flavor to the regular single. As of late, while I do like the Dave Audé remix of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face", it is actually Jody Den Broeder's interpretation of it that I'm just FLOORED by! Perhaps it's the hypnotic element in the background but something about that remix just "kills" it ("kills" in a good way!). The Cahill remix of Chris Brown's "Forever" was another pop/R&B remix that was excellent as well. I also have to add the Karmatronic remix of Beyoncé's "If I Were A Boy" as well.

If future pop remixes can follow the lead of the songs mentioned above where it still is the "artists" track but the reinterpretation of it can sell as its own, then THAT'S what will get those casual listeners over to becoming full-fledged dance music fans and down the road more radio stations may consider a CDR format (contemporary dance radio).

From a core point of view, it may be deemed as a necessary "evil". But we have to get more involved somehow. So to that......bring it!!!

Tony, you got me with that one, babe...that was GOOD...

(ps: LOVE your personal messages and your emails!! :))
(actually, 1985 was not one of my favorite years musically - oh well... ;))

The last 20 yrs is proof enough that having a pop or r&b song remixed does nothing to help dance music. Just look how many dance artists played on radio prior to this. What we need are more artists with the marketability of Lady Gaga. I'll even take a song like "Closer".

Thanks for the memories. Planet Z was a fun time for me. Our mixshow was different because we leaned more on the alternative tip which KTU at the time was more on the Guido House tip. We played everything from Fatboy Slim to Republica - Ready to go. Whoever the jock told you why Planet Z was taken off the air is mistaken. That maybe his opinion. However, it was partly a money issue and partly a merger issue. KTU and Z100 had just merged and they made some budget cuts. One of those cuts was the mixshow at Z100. However, the decision was made to move me over to KTU right at that time in 2000. Hence thanks to Frankie Blu and Jeff Z - DJ Riddler was born. That's right, I didn't choose my name they did. I would love to hear those old PLanet Z recordings sometime if you still have them. ;D
