103.5 WKTU has definitely turned down their processing level, so you get to hear more of the treble that usually gets squashed down by the typical "competitive" processing level. They also seem to be using an expanded Stereo effect.

Is CC changing their processing units?

A few posts down, someone noticed WLTW had updated their audio. Do you think this is going to happen at the rest of the Clear Channel stations?

Wow, it's night and day right now when compared with Mix 102.7 which also seems to be one of the "loudest" stations on the dial overall...I like Mix has done with their processing though. Which station(s) do you feel have the best processing in NYC?

Re: Is CC changing their processing units?

If you think that's something, WTRY 98.3 here in Albany NY which is owned by Clear Channel sounds just as bad as WCBSFM 101.1 did from 8-04 to 6-3-05. Since after the 4th of july the station sounds terrible, songs are either to low or loud, lots of times the dj's voices get drowned out by the songs and the bass kicks in sometimes too which makes it sound real terrible and there's no reverb or anything good on the sound. So who knows if this is the start of something with Clear Channel doing this to their radio stations.

Re: Is CC changing their processing units?

This has been happening in other markets.
Also the intros being too loud can be a result of them being improperly voice tracked.

There could be any number of reasons for this. Either they are converting more of the stations to Prophet system, or it has to do with digital radio. I saw a post recently, where somone had discovered that compression doesn't work with IBOC.

Don't know if that's what it is, but it's something.

For their format, WNEW's processing is pretty decent, but like all of the stations using Omnia processors in NYC, the clipping distortion can get rather obtrusive at times. They would sound a heck of a lot better if they just slightly backed off on the composite clipping -- even 1 dB less clipping would make a huge improvement in their audio quality. But they're definitely not as bad as stations like WPAT-FM, WRKS, or WBLS, which are all clipped up to wazoo and basically turn anything with heavy bass and/or treble in it into total grunge.

Meanwhile, WKTU's "new" also basically is the result of backing off on the midrange in order to emphasize the low bass and high treble. This is a rather strange choice, because most dance music fans already have their stereo systems set up with their bass and treble controls maxed out. So if anything, WKTU should really be using a midrange boost in order to compensate for this. That's what WLTW seems to be doing -- with their latest revision, their audio has noticeable more midrange, most noticeable when the DJ is on-mike.
