For their format, WNEW's processing is pretty decent, but like all of the stations using Omnia processors in NYC, the clipping distortion can get rather obtrusive at times. They would sound a heck of a lot better if they just slightly backed off on the composite clipping -- even 1 dB less clipping would make a huge improvement in their audio quality. But they're definitely not as bad as stations like WPAT-FM, WRKS, or WBLS, which are all clipped up to wazoo and basically turn anything with heavy bass and/or treble in it into total grunge.
Meanwhile, WKTU's "new" also basically is the result of backing off on the midrange in order to emphasize the low bass and high treble. This is a rather strange choice, because most dance music fans already have their stereo systems set up with their bass and treble controls maxed out. So if anything, WKTU should really be using a midrange boost in order to compensate for this. That's what WLTW seems to be doing -- with their latest revision, their audio has noticeable more midrange, most noticeable when the DJ is on-mike.
