KULF

Has that station been off the air all week? I turn to it ever so often I think they went off the air last sunday, and still was off the air this weekend? Whats the deal, weather? or what? ??? ???

So is this station officially silent? I already took them out of my presets, I know others who quit listening, sad we got 3 stations in Victoria that are Silent now. ::)

KULF, Lonestar, whatever, is always off. They are in deep with financial problems and when you can't stay on the air, you don't have listeners, you don't have advertising. Economics 101. Strange though, latest ratings show them way ahead of Texas Mix 98.7. But that doesn't say much.

I just don't understand why this kind of thing keeps happening (or should I say, is allowed to happen). Granted KEZB (96.1) is licensed to Edna and their tower is so far east they never had much of a signal in Victoria, but something could be done with it. On the other hand, KULF (104.7), a class C2 with a tower halfway between Edna and Victoria, has good coverage of Victoria. The signal of KJAZ (94.1) Point Comfort wasn't all that bad either, although if they actually build out their construction permit it would be more of a Port Lavaca station.

KEZB was sold recently and there's no telling when they're coming back on, since they were bought by a holding company that will be reselling it. The only station out of the three that's officially listed as "silent" is KJAZ; supposedly the last time they were actually on the air was before August 31st, 2006. At last report it's still owned by Fort Bend Broadcasting, as is KULF, which on paper is the most attractive property of all. So there's really no reason it shouldn't be on the air.

Victoria is not an arbitron rated market. Are you looking at county by county numbers?

Texas Radio is a niche format (AAA). It will always have smaller numbers, but the listeners are freakishly loyal.

The Eastlan survey which does small markets like Yuma (used to do Lufkin), some in Idaho etc. It's an independent diary with comparable Arbitron methodolgy. I saw some prelim results for the spring and it shows KIXS and KLUB as number one and two in a 25-54 and the same for 18-49. Regardless you gotta feel sorry for the stations that can't cut it financially.

How is KULF ahead of Texas radio is what I dont see? KULF never seemed to get their format together, it was either Texas radio mix Classic country new country 90s country, they never stuck to one format. ::)

Exactly. They were never consistent on KULF. Either on satellite or with one jock. It's like a throw away for Henderson.

I heard the Point Comfort signal was land locked and could not raise the tower height because of flight path on the coast. And no one would rent tower space to Henderson because they never get paid.

I agree that so much more could be done with the KULF signal. But as far as "ratings" go, I think this is another case of where diaries are not very accurate.

I heard from someone in the biz that CC has a some ownership in Eastland. Anyone know if there's truth to that?

CC does not have an ownership in Eastlan or Arbitron. Never had. Another "Evil Empire" myth.

Sorry, I meant Eastlan, I have less control over my fingers after a couple glasses of wine. LOL

Thanks for clearing up the myth. I wonder how many diaries were sent out, and the return percentage. Also, was that just Victoria county or surrounding counties too?

Wow....just 9:30AM and already two glasses of wine! ;D Yep. You're in radio all right. As far as diaries, all I know is the sample is larger than what Arbitron would put out.

ROFLMAO. No seriously, when I misspelled Eastlan it was yesterday evening. Although, I guess a mimosa would go good with an omlette!!!!

I wonder which stations in Victoria use Eastlan. And what do agencies think of that company?

I'm told most agencies accept Eastlan in the smaller markets. I think KIXS, KLUB and KQVT use Eastlan and it's available to the market. It covers the county and it has separate coverage of 6 surrounding counties.

Now finish that Mimosa before noon.

I guess 104.7 is back on the air just tuned to it today for a secound.
