KVET Morning Show

CTHank said:
Well based on the cozy relationship between CC Corporate in SA and Rep Lamar 'I never met a national ID program I didn't like' Smith (heck the Joe Pags show often sounds like an infomercial for Smith) and that CC (from what I've heard, I have no absolute proof) is one of those clamoring for this type of legislation, I'm surprised they mentioned anything about it at all.

So what you're saying is that they were even more unprepared than I thought! The woman said she had a hard time preparing for the show this morning because Wikipedia was down.

Don't students get an "F" if they use Wikipedia as a source?

I have no idea why I'm responding, but, here we go.
We mentioned Rep. Smith at least three times during the show today. His direct involvement is kind of beside the point as far as the typical non-wonk listener is concerned, the blackout and the potential implications of the bill are much more relevant and that's where we stayed. There is no directive from CC to avoid this topic.
There is nothing wrong with using Wikipedia as a fast reference, to infer otherwise is stupid. I look at Wikipedia all the time and have for years when doing prep.
We spent most of the show talking about SOPA and PIPA and got a bunch of great, smart...YOUNG callers, overall a successful show for one that's been on for THREE DAYS.
You guys kill me with your cynicism toward a new LIVE and LOCAL show with every intent to honor the heritage of a great radio station.
You kill me, but you don't surprise me, and I'm glad that not much of anybody who matters looks at this board, and those who do know better.

I'll be away for awhile.
Chris

If indeed you did talk about the representative today when speaking about the bill, that's great. Those of us with a quick drive didn't get a chance to hear the particular one, and your point is well taken.

But NO SIR. Using Wikipedia as a reference for on-air material will eventually bite you in the butt. There is an entire web out there of documented information. Using Wiki as a STARTING PLACE, then going to other sites to confirm is fine. But I wouldn't trust Wikipedia as a sole source if someone put a gun to my head.

NO SIR... Lamar Smith's involvement is NOT beside the point as we have a local rep carrying the most controversial piece of legislation in a long, long time. Wonks? You're calling people who use the Internet Wonks? Oh please.

The cynicism isn't directed toward the KVET morning show specifically...it's directed at anything from Clear Channel, given the company's actions over the past few years at stations across the country. It's great that there IS a local show here in Austin. It's too bad that so many others have been sacrificed.

And on top of everything else...you may remember that back when Cole started he caught Hell as well. I called KVET the morning of one of those big changes (1988?) and the receptionist was literally in tears, the callers on the phones was that hostile.

KVET listeners don't like change. And this time is no exception.

To the comment of being shocked CC has a local show.. let's look at the stations in Austin and see which ones are local. There are 5 stations, KASE, KHFI, KPEZ, KVET AM, KVET FM. The stations that have local morning shows are: KASE, KHFI, KPEZ, KVET AM, KVET FM. hmmm

Boo haters who hide behind an alias. If KVET found a cure for cancer, this board would still be mad.

Perhaps a topic for another thread, but does Bobby Bones count as a local show now that he's syndicated? Can he talk about stuff going on here in Austin?

Not sure there are a lot of haters, it's just that KVET has simply become another generic country station that plays music from the 80's/90's and today. There's nothing unique about it any longer, except for the roadhouse and who knows how much longer that will be around without Chris programming and hosting it.

A friend of mine who used to live here was out visiting and said that Austin has become much like Santa Cruz California without the Ocean, same people, same politics, same everything, the city has been californicated and to a lot of long-time listeners KVET has become just another mediocre mainstream radio station, with music and voices that I can listen to anywhere at any place on the dial or the internet. People used to listen from around the world, because the station had something special but now not so much.

If it climbs out of the middle of the ratings pack well then those who chose this programming path will have been proven correct, if it stays in the middle well what can you say, I guess mediocrity is what some seek to achieve and what the market demands.

Guys, I think if I were you I would cut them a little slack. Yes, I have my issues with the way Clear Channel does business in general, but not so long ago we were talking about the possibility of KVET probably getting a syndicated morning show, and a really bad one at that. So first off, its a live local show and that is a plus. Secondly, let's give them some time to find themselves and gel as a show. We always complain on this board about radio companies not giving shows or formats a chance to establish themselves and here you all are wanting to yank the chain after 5 days. Thirdly, the KVET morning show as a political talk show is gone. Yeah, I miss it because I liked that kind of show, but this ain't it and shouldn't try to be. Chris and Anne are different people with different goals. I expect the Texas Music scene to become a big part of the show because that's what they know. They are trying to get a younger audience so I'm sure pop culture will be a big part of the show (Bob Cole used to do American Idol reports so not that big of a change) and I'm sure politics will be a part of the show....just not the focus.

So basically what I am saying is...chill out.

Still curious as to what happened to Chris Bender. Bender was Bob Cole's partner for most of a year and was still doing the show after Bob left. Yet everyone says the new duo is replacing Bob Cole. It's like Bender was never at KVET.

Wow! Any rumbles why?
Did you actually ever listen to him on the air? Honestly, I've never met the guy....well come to think of it I did once, and I have no beef with him at all. In fact I'm sorry he had to lose his gig especially after moving to Austin so recently, but that is the way that CC works now. Once they figured out that they could move Chris and Anne into that slot, that meant they were covering more time with less people and Bender was no longer a necessary commodity. They also just laid off De Hanson on the AM side and now they are having to scramble to fill that void. Not that he was necessarily needed on that afternoon show, but he was able to do things like play by play and fill ins on other day parts when needed. Now they have no safety net, but at least Clear Channel can say they cut their costs.
