KVI

Finally caught KVI today. Not sure what to make of it. It isn't news, it isn't conservative talk, but what are they doing. The morning show had lots of interviews but was fairly dull. Clark Howard was what I expected. The afternoon guy seemed young and talked a bunch about food, celebrities and music. Afternoon Wall Street Journal report was news centered. Is this kind of the approach that Randy Michael's was taking with his stations in New York and Chicago? It is not working there, will it work in Seattle? I also wonder why they simulcast KOMO News and Traffic at the top and bottom of each hour. Won't that just create confusion or worse hurt KOMO's numbers?
Basically they join KOMO for ten minutes at the top and bottom of each hour and then breakaway to interviews or syndicated shows. Weird concept.

Admire Fisher for spending money on local shows, but don't get the direction.

Again, we're dealing with something called a "placeholder". I'm sure KVI is something Fisher really wants to get rid of. But there are no real takers......

Again, you're wrong. Stations do not invest in a format change, hire local talent and execute a format like this as a "placeholder."

We'll see......

I see they have a new PD- Travis Box is going to be a stay at home dad. Changing diapers and calming down screamers- he's probably used to that from being a talk show producer for so long!

They didn't exactly hire "new talent." The live staff are people who already worked in the building.

But they hired local and live talent. If it was a "placeholder," they would be pumping out syndicated programming 24/7.

When owners put a "place holder" on the air, these days it is usually the oldies format. When the station goes to that, you know its a year or two until the studios have been repaired and the "new" talk format is ready to go. Lifestyle talk does not work in many places, but it may in Seattle.

KVI's syndicated shows might make a small dent in the ratings, very small.

But, the 'live and local' shows on KVI are doomed to fail. Someone at Fisher with a real TV mindset thinks they can reinvent the wheel. They're trying to do Entertainment Tonight or Oprah on radio. Which would be fine if you wanted to go out and hire Oprah or Pat O'Brien and a staff of top notch producers to pack content into every second of air-time.

But throwing a couple of second-tier TV and radio types onto the air and telling them to do lifestyle radio is going to lead to nothing. You get what you pay for.

Monday afternoon it was snowing in Seattle, KIRO was talking non-stop about the weather and traffic and KVI was re-hashing the Golden Globes (and not rehashing very well) and reading 4 day old stories from Reddit.

Smart Talk ain't too smart.

I'm surprised. Back in Nov 2010 when we had the big snowstorm here around Thanksgiving, KOMO was the winner (taking phone calls) and KIRO was showing reruns of Dave Ross!!

I must be very much in the minority when I say that I believe this is a good move by Fisher. KVI's format is one that is unique and very distinct from the ones offered by KOMO, KIRO and KTTH. I'm not sure that KVI is going for the same listeners who would normally tune in to any of the aforementioned stations. Clark Howard and Phil Hendrie, IMHO, give the station instant credibility.

I would urge Fisher to stay the course and let KVI build a good audience. No, it may never challenge KOMO or KIRO for the top of Seattle's ratings, but there's no reason to believe the station won't ultimately succeed.

This morning, we got about 4 or 5 inches of new snow. Checking the radio this AM...

KOMO: Very good coverage, Paul Tosch giving us every spinout and lots of tips on how to beat the cold, lots of reports from the area
KVI: Playing stories about American Idol
KIRO: Good coverage, quite a bit about the snow, i.e. Seattle hotels booked, and Sea-Tac cancelling nearly 40 flights

Current talent is being used because they still have contracts to finish out with Fisher - no sense letting them collect money for no work. You have to pay for syndication feeds, moving these 2 to this slot saved them money.

Just not true says a friend of mine that works there. Said the only contract to work off is Brian Suits, making a boat load for another year or less. This is the morning show, he told me Mark was basically part time at KVI oldies? Dunno?
