KVOS Seattle (???)

KVOS signed on in 1953 and has been licensed to Bellingham ever since. So why does the legal ID say "KVOS Seattle"? This is the only legal ID they use and I have seen it several times although of course when I go to take a picture of it there are credits underneath!
I guess it's been a while since they actually ran a legal ID!

According to the FCC database, it is still licensed to Bellingham. If they are running their TOH ID as "KVOS Seattle", they would seem to be out of compliance. Whether they serve Seattle or not is beside the point.

Can anyone else shed some light here?

Not really surprising given that the station itself is directing its signal to Seattle-Tacoma.

The closest examples for a TV stations to this in the examples are Univision owned/ Unimas Affiliate KFSF-TV Vallejo, California but is often mentioned as KFSF-TV San Francisco mainly because it’s part of the duopoly with Univision affiliate KDTV San Francisco. KUVS Modesto but is often mentioned as Univision Sacramento mainly because the station is the Univision affiliate in the core city and KOVR Stockton which is often labeled as KOVR aka CBS News Sacramento. I don’t see that as surprising to see KVOS Id themselves as being in Seattle.

As I understand it, as long as they identify themselves in some fashion as "KVOS Bellingham", they can say anything else they want to.

Are we sure that they don't do an audio TOH ID with those words? Maybe something said very quickly?

The bottom line on the screen has a correct legal ID- KFSF-DT 66.1 Vallejo/San Francisco. The big letters up top are their branding- "UniMas 66 etc." That's not the situation with KVOS.

All they have to do to bail themselves out of any FCC problem is bribe the president. From that point, they can ID as "KVOS Narnia" and no one will touch them.

According to TravelMath.com, Seattle to Bellingham is about 90 miles. I understand that Bellingham is part of the Seattle television market and KVOS serves as the Univision outlet for Seattle's Hispanic TV viewers. But for a Bellingham TV station to even pretend it is "KVOS Seattle" is too far a stretch.

I'm not sure if someone on a hilltop within the City of Seattle could even receive KVOS's signal on a television set with a normal antenna.

In this case, I think cable system coverage matters more than OTA coverage. The average viewer doesn't know or care about "city of license"... all they know is that it's one of the channels they can watch.

and while i think city of license is [pointless these days as is the need for a legal id.... the fcc still cares, i think

It apparently still matters to the FCC. I can think of two stations that have no presence whatsoever in their city of license other than getting a good signal there: WTTV/4 Bloomington/Indianapolis and KPNX/12 Mesa/Phoenix. Neither has had a physical presence in their COL in decades (mid or late 1970s for WTTV, late '50s for KPNX, then called KTAR-TV once it closed the Mesa studios). Also, KPNX had ID'ed at "Phoenix/Mesa" until the analog signals were turned off in 2009, when they finally fixed it.
