KVUT shuts down

Yeah, well, like magic KVUT is on the air. Hey, @lanceventa, Scott has already fixed one issue that UT-Tyler never did. Pronunciation of the COL. Now correctly IDing as KVUT "Coon-ee", instead of KVUT "Q-knee".

Playing movie themes, right now it's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Signal barely reaching into Lindale, which is weaker than what it was before shutting down in May. No sign of it in Wood County, or Mineola itself.

Is RCA running the full 1600w or reduced?

RDS showing "KVUT 99.7 UT-Tyler Radio". Now playing The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Is this RCA, or has UT turned it back on themselves?

The signal is cutting in and out around Gladewater. It seems weaker than it used to be.

I guess UT Tyler is putting something on the air to keep the license active while they transfer ownership.

I am experiencing the same. No sign of the future KFRO-FM in Mineola. I was hearing the Sulphur Bluff 3ABN station on both checks of 99.7. You start to hear snippets of KVUT as you approach FM 16 and Highway 69. Once you're past Doc's Pizza in Lindale, the signal becomes clearer but still experiences a lot of static. At 20, KVUT is pretty solid. Good signal all over Tyler, and of course is solid in Whitehouse, Bullard, Flint, etc. Haven't talked to Bill Betten in a few weeks, but I'd expect he's picking up a good signal from KVUT as far south as he is in Maydelle (Rusk).

There wasn't a need for that. They had until May before the license would've been jeopardized. Kinda thought this was a performance proof being done with the equipment, but we're a week in now, and the stunt continues. It took Scott Rice a couple two/three weeks to re-launch KCUL-FM when he first bought it from Access 1. I would suspect KFRO to show up on 99.7 sometime around Christmas. Wouldn't that be nice to not have to rely on KVNE for Christmas tunes this holiday season?

I heard a religious station cutting in on 99.7 as well. It must have been the Sulphur Bluff station. I forgot about that oje.

So Scott Rice owns The Depot as well? It would be fun if he could bring it to Tyler. But classic hits is a better bet. Yep, it would be nice to have another choice for Christmas music.

If you go a little ways from town you get an extra effect on the station. “Static? No kids! That’s a blizzard coming through! Bundle up, kids! It’s going to be a cold and snowy Christmas!” :)

So Scott Rice owns The Depot as well?
No. He did, and the AM as well. 1410 was toppled by a tornado, never rebuilt, then surrendered. He sold KCUL-FM to The Depot folks, ending his ownership of anything in Marshall. Right now, Rice owns KFRO and the 94.1 translator. He's acquiring 99.7, bringing him back up to 3. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a player in a future acquisition or two, either.

Do you think the testing now is to prove coverage and / or to see how it can be improved?

It didn't actually come back on the air until the sale was granted. No consummation notice has yet been filed, and the RDS remains as it was when it was shut down in May. "KVUT 99.7 UT-Tyler Radio". Only thing missing is the on-screen mention of "uttr.org" or "kvut.org" that once scrolled directly afterwards. To my ear, this sounds more like the University simply threw together a compilation of movie tunes, dropped a simple ID in between each number, and set it up to loop. Why, I don't know. I would've just left it off until Rice decided to kick on the transmitter himself, after he had the keys to the place, as there is still plenty of time left on the clock to get the facility sale consummated, feeds switched, and then brought back to service.

On the subject of improvement opportunities for KVUT/KFRO-FM, there is a list of neighboring signals that would prohibit any increases for 99.7. UT-Tyler shoehorned it in as best they could, knowing full well that was as good as it was going to get. Trying for any real movement of KVUT further into Tyler would cost you power and height, neither of which KVUT has to spare. Scott Rice certainly knows this, too, but the station currently provides a good signal to both larger western ETX cities, Jacksonville and Tyler, much moreso than the stronger KTYK up the dial does in Tyler. The signal's sweet spot covers all of the rapid growth areas in southern Smith and northern Cherokee counties. The median age may be a little younger down there than the north side of Tyler, but it is predominantly white, and dead center of the ears that an 80's heavy rotation is going to attempt to reach.

The same basic programming concept KFRO uses has been a small town success for KWJB in Canton, just 35 miles to the west of KVUT. That's with a bad AM and an average translator. Mainly 80's, with some real curve balls thrown in for good measure, it generates a lot of interest in Canton, over a decade span, and continues to maintain a solid, loyal listener base.

I believe Scott Rice will see a good bit of success with KFRO on 99.7 and covering its own communities in the same way. It may not look it on paper, but 99.7 really isn't that bad of a facility for Tyler. But it's just a Tyler station. No coverage of Longview, however, that's no longer a problem with it soon to be paired with the AM/translator in Longview.

So, as of 2:00 p.m. today KFRO-FM is now simulcasting 1370 KFRO in Longview. Billed as "Christmas 99.7 & 94.1 KFRO".

Ho, Ho, Ho RCA Broadcasting. See ya again on December 26th.

Notification of Consummation for 99.7 was filed with the FCC today.
ID and RDS have been updated, too, for those readers who keep track of such things.

RDS for the new KFRO-FM is simply "99.7 KFRO". New TOH ID is "KFRO 1370 Longview, K231DK 94.1 Longview, and KFRO-FM 99.7 Cuney, Texas."

I was very happy (by way of Fybush Media) to have represented Scottie in this transaction.

Nice to see a local owner doing well!
@fybush, he ought to do very well on this side of the market. Jacksonville and Tyler have been absolutely starving for a format like he programs on KFRO. Closest thing to it in the market is KDOK, skewing a bit too old for the younger generations here, and Jack, which is...well, Jack. We all know what that entails.

He's starting off with a splash, for certain. At least to some of us long timers plowing a row behind the Pine Curtain. You guys may not even realize this, but this is the first time, I believe, anyone has dared to go all-Christmas against KVNE since Dudley Waller used to do it at KOOI.

I sure betcha it hasn't gone unnoticed down at the ERFET HQ on Old Jacksonville Highway.

I know it was just a translator then but did they do Christmas last year? I remember the RDS for 94.1 was mentioning Christmas music after Christmas

I'm a few Miller Lites in, partner, so if I'm reading that question right (and all bets are off on that) 1370 and 94.1 KFRO, indeed, went all-Christmas last year. It has done Christmas ever since it was airing the Galaxy Moonbeam programming, and continued to once the station was re-launched with the current classic hits format.

I checked out KFRO today. It sounds great musically and in sound quality. To my surprise, 99.7 makes well into Longview. The music seems to have shifted a little forward. It’s mostly 80s with some 70s and early 90s.

Yes it has, Jay. Sounds like Scott Rice is being mighty neighborly to distance himself further away from K-DOK's heavy 60's/70's rotation. He's also playing newer hits than the early 90's, too. Played Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars "Uptown Funk" yesterday evening. KFRO is solidly in the "80's and more" wheelhouse, now, and I'm a bit of a fan.

As I mentioned earlier, this should be a smash hit for RCA Broadcasting. Exactly what ETX has been missing since K-double O-I got Jack'd in '17.

Wow! It’s sounding a lot like a gold-based AC. I don’t know if I’m ready for “Uptown Funk” to be considered an “oldie.”

The newest song I heard was Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” from 1998. I didn’t hear any spots, just promos saying to advertise on KFRO because they are local unlike the other stations owned by corporations based in “New York City and Portland, OR.”

The only thing I think they should do different is mention Tyler after Cuney for the KFRO-FM part of the ID. Maybe it’s not as big of a deal as I think now, but Tyler listeners need to think it’s their station, too.

KYKX booms right into town, but I suspect that it might as well not exist to Tyler listeners. I think the vast majority of KYKX’s ratings come from Longview. There’s no way KNUE is that much better than KYKX (if they really are).
