99.5 simulcasting 1170 seems logical to go up against KRMG... for Kool 106.1, I don't know what they may try. A 1430 simulcast seems like a bit much, but the heads there may see it otherwise. If they're losing advertisers to The Sports Animal's 97.1, that would be a vote for the simulcast. (Do you leave 1300 alone?)
I've continued to see a hole for all-80s, but consultants point to failures of that format around the nation & say no.
I'd think smooth jazz is saturated by fringe signals, plus CC tried that in the past & it didn't last. We don't have a real soft AC, but that would likely skew older too. Chrome is making a little noise, but that's older still & was what Kool
left to do what they were doing.
Active rock might have an audience, although that risks cutting into KMOD, & Rock 102.3 didn't make it. An all-90s format is in order, would be a younger demo, but as previously discussed would be hard to focus.
I'd also think 92.1, 105.3, 106.9, 1050 & 1340 would be more than enough urban for this market. Even if you created a format that beat up 105.3, 1050 & 1340, the market would likely be too splintered to make it a success.
All-dance just collapsed in New York, so it seems unlikely to would be tried here... although it would be fun to see a battle between 92.1 (basically urban), 106.9 (what we used to call CHurban), & 106.1. With CC owning 92.1, there's no reason for them to cut into their own audience, though.
A rock-leaning top 40 would be fun, right next to K-Hits & taking bites out of The Edge's audience. I don't know if they want that kind of battle since it seems like CC also tried that with 92.1.
CCM was working on 102.3, just not quite well enough for the top brass. I don't know if CC has any CCM stations, though... that could be a real money-maker for them if they picked up where Spirit left off.
...won't it be funny if Kool 106.1 comes back classic top 40 and 99.5 stays classic country? All of our speculation... Oh well, it's still fun to guess!
