KWEN mornings

Jim:

Welcome to T-Town! If you're really a bus driver...get on the air Monday and do a little Ralph Kramden! "Hey, Norton, come here...I wanna show ya something! I been watching you....."

Bryan....Great meeting you too. Funny story, kid got on my bus and after two days told me I didn't look like a Bus Driver either! I said, "what do I look like?" She said, "You look more corporate." (I had to agree) Looking forward to a great time in Tulsa and part of my contract says I have to drive the K95.5FM Party Bus they've been rumored to be buying!

Jim,

I KNOW YOU!

I replaced Sara (middays) at K99.1 FM in Dayton right after you left Cox, Dayton for Nashville. You and I actually met (right before you left Dayton) when I was up from Tulsa interviewing for the midday slot at K99.

Good to see you landed in the best Cox market in America.

Not surprised you couldn't stay away from Cox. It gets in your blood.

It's a small world, after all...everybody sing!

I've never worked for Cox, but almost everyone I know who has worked for them has great praise for the company. Nice to hear these things...

I have to admit that the new show sounds better. I was hesitant at first, but it is a huge improvement since I checked it out several months ago. I wonder how many people realize that there is a new "Carey" on the show? Still miss Cooper, but I think this show has the best chance of winning. Didn't Kellie work with Cooper?

I can't recall Kelley Cash ever working with Cooper, but it's possible. If she's who I'm thinking she is, she's the former Mrs. Mel Meyers.

Yes, Kelly Cash is the former Mrs. Mel Myers. I don't know if she worked with Bob Cooper or not. I only remember him with JoAnn Downs for mornings. Although, they may have worked together on one of his many fill ins on K95.

I believe Downs arrived as Cooper's morning co-host in '86. Cooper was at KWEN long before that, but I don't know who his other co-hosts were, if he even had any.

Gee, thanks for the slander, Matt! I will likely own your station by 5:00 today. ;D Kelly worked overnites at K95 in the late 80s...left, I think, for motherhood and at one time did mornings on KOOL...landed back at K95 a few years ago. Memory a bit fuzzy at this point! I was with Jo Harben for about a year [we never dated], Larry Hoefling from about 82-86 [we never dated] and JoAnn from 86-99 [we never dated].

A couple of really underrated guys, Marc Franklin and Steve Sherrick, did fill in duties for Jo Ann since our tenure had afforded us some serious vaca time by the 90s. Very nice to have a pro cohost like Jo Ann [speaking of underrated] and then subs who knew the mindset of mornings.

Don't worry about it Coop...Matt is just mad because you never wanted to date HIM! JK!! Thanks for the K95 mornings update. Always enjoyed your show on K95 and countless other Tulsa radio stations. I know you're where you need to be but Tulsa radio misses you.

COUNTLESS stations? First Bradley paints me a lech, now you as a vagabond! Tell ya, tell ya, no respect!!

Since I'm here, and haven't been deep in the bowels of the biz for awhile, someone school me. I read the speculation of format changes at KOOL and Big Country...both, I assume older-consumed stations. I see 12+ numbers and 99.5 seems to be OK, considering it's a niche format...is it the demos that might spark a change? [I actually have the CORRECT answer, but it'll cost ya!] The big picture question: who is the audience for terrestrial radio for the next five years? Who does everyone want to get now?

Regarding KOOL...had a good time working for and with Kevan there. I don't specialize in fueling rumors, but since someone else brought it up...something that happened here might be in play for them. If I were mandated to change that format I might consider it. WNUW in Philly went head-on against B101 [AC]...about as futile as taking on K95 in the 80s and early 90s. Labor Day they started simulcasting with their AM station at 950, all sports. Might a 1430/106.1 simul be viable? 1430's lineup, for the sports fan, is formidable. You don't get huge numbers with it, but better coverage and a possibly improved revenue stream. Please upbraid me as necessary!

Please have her add three lashes for me! And give her my best.

99.5 simulcasting 1170 seems logical to go up against KRMG... for Kool 106.1, I don't know what they may try. A 1430 simulcast seems like a bit much, but the heads there may see it otherwise. If they're losing advertisers to The Sports Animal's 97.1, that would be a vote for the simulcast. (Do you leave 1300 alone?)

I've continued to see a hole for all-80s, but consultants point to failures of that format around the nation & say no.

I'd think smooth jazz is saturated by fringe signals, plus CC tried that in the past & it didn't last. We don't have a real soft AC, but that would likely skew older too. Chrome is making a little noise, but that's older still & was what Kool left to do what they were doing.

Active rock might have an audience, although that risks cutting into KMOD, & Rock 102.3 didn't make it. An all-90s format is in order, would be a younger demo, but as previously discussed would be hard to focus.

I'd also think 92.1, 105.3, 106.9, 1050 & 1340 would be more than enough urban for this market. Even if you created a format that beat up 105.3, 1050 & 1340, the market would likely be too splintered to make it a success.

All-dance just collapsed in New York, so it seems unlikely to would be tried here... although it would be fun to see a battle between 92.1 (basically urban), 106.9 (what we used to call CHurban), & 106.1. With CC owning 92.1, there's no reason for them to cut into their own audience, though.

A rock-leaning top 40 would be fun, right next to K-Hits & taking bites out of The Edge's audience. I don't know if they want that kind of battle since it seems like CC also tried that with 92.1.

CCM was working on 102.3, just not quite well enough for the top brass. I don't know if CC has any CCM stations, though... that could be a real money-maker for them if they picked up where Spirit left off.

...won't it be funny if Kool 106.1 comes back classic top 40 and 99.5 stays classic country? All of our speculation... Oh well, it's still fun to guess! :)

Read about All-Dance taking the gas pipe in NYC. How about All Lap Dance? Between the "clubs" and massage places in Tulsa I would anticipate a robust client list.

Here's the problem: Tulsa currently has 4 sports radio stations (counting the 97.1/1550 simulcast). That's too many for a market with no pro sports teams. The Sports Animal is barely a blip on the radar in Tulsa. Flipping 106.1 to sports (especially to the horrendous programming of 1430) would be regrettable.

I personally think 106.1 could work as a Hot AC competitor to 96.5 (who isn't really Hot AC, they seem to be more of a mainstream AC format), or as a Smooth Jazz/Soft AC hybrid to compete with 92.9 and 107.9 (and 103.7!).

A format that Tulsa doesn't have, but which I could see having some success is Triple A.

And 106.1 simulcasting 1170? Yikes. Politics aside, 1170 just isn't good. The best thing they could do is to flip 1170 back to Classic Country, re-establish the heritage calls, and find a better use for 99.5.

OK!! UNCLE!! Not familiar with Triple A format. Please describe! :-[

AAA = Adult Album Alternative = The Edge lite (kinda). It's modern music for adults with an alternative twist.

To my tastes, it's always looked better on paper than it has sounded to my ears, but perhaps I haven't heard the right presentation.

This is a format CC tried on 101.5 years ago... admittedly not the best signal... but as I remember, numbers were dismal.

Hey! Just remembered: they even tried a Christian version... so CC HAS had CCM stations before... so perhaps a CCM format for 106.1 isn't such a crazy stretch...
