KWOD signing off on May 22nd @ 9am

Fresh prince, then Madonna, to Foo Fighters is what I heard as of 9:09. Did anyone hear what they signed on with?

Yes, I missed out too! What was KWOD's last Alternative Song and what was The Buzz's First 90's song?

Last song was "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" by Cake.

First song was "Summertime" by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

Expect new call letters to be: KBZC

This will be interesting to see how My 92.5 and The Zone react. And I wonder if 98 Rock will still play a lot of the 90's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Times Like These songs that The Buzz will surely have in regular rotation.

Another thought, will Sac see Monica Lowe back on-air now that she is at Entercom?

I wonder if they'll add shows like Backtraxx USA the 90s, or old countdowns from the 90s from the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40. How about old episodes of Ooen House Party from the 90s?

Hey guys,

Another website (I’m not saying who) is reporting that entercom registered 1065thebuzz.com, and set up a twitter account for “The Buzz.” It also believes that, come tomarro, you will see the first 90’s station.

Generally speaking, the 80's stations (from the beginning of this decade) focused on Rock/New Wave -- instead of playing ALL the 80's hits -- and most failed.

Will the 90's stations make the same mistake? With a name like "The Buzz", I'm inclined to think so.

So far so good. They're playing all the big hits on CHR/Pop radio and MTV from the 90s.

Bleh. KWOD died a long time ago. When they repositioned as KWOD V2.0, IMHO.

I would suspect the station to get a big bump from a new/old morning show moving in.

Here's what I don't get. How do they expect someone that listens to Fresh Prince be able to be receptive to the Foo Fighters. As a rock fan my personal tsl with them would be about 3 minutes. I just don't think you can add all the songs from one time period, and expect it to come out with something that's workable. It's like adding watermelon, sushi, toenails, and polywogs to eggs and expecting to make an omelet that anyone would want to eat.

I completely disagree that mixing 90s genres won't work. It has worked, to various extents, at CHR for years. I'm guessing if we searched through the 90s charts, we could find a week when Madonna, Will Smith and Foo Fighters all charted. Sure, CHR stations tend to be more 'focused' and can lean rhythmic or rock, but wouldn't nostalgia somewhat erase the necessity to target a station to pure rock fans or pure rhythmic fans?

I've been saying for years that any 90s station would need to play ALL of the genres, and it sounds like they're on to something here. As someone already pointed, the 80s stations that populated the dial earlier this decade focused mainly on rock/pop and new wave, and now they're all in the dustbin.

Oh, and this is completely unscientific because its just me, but I have 90s artists on my iPod ranging from Madonna to 2Pac to Garth Brooks to Foo Fighters. I think many of the societal changes that occurred in the 90s were reflected in a more diverse span of music being accepted by more people.

This station is not designed at all for the former KWOD audience. Seems like it's going after someone who might have like 90's pop/CHR. Wilson Phillips to Green Day to Skee Lo. In a way, it's a little bit "Jack" like, but solely focused on 90's. Apparently there WILL be jocks. But for this initial day of music, probably not where it will end up exactly, when you look at it 90 days from now.

The 90's...

Arguably one of the worst decades for music, and now it has a format and station.

Will someone wake up and launch a AAA station...that is the hole, that is the niche missing, not a decade's based hodge podge..

Can't wait to hear Roxette and all their copy cats, Mr. Big, SWV, Ace of Base...I would rather put my hand in a blender.

Who would want to win the demo that likes that music?

I may be showing my age, but I'd rather hear an all Disco station instead that crap.

That's like a 20 year old saying "Those damn Beatles got so excited because they made a plane go from left to right speakers. Who cares?" The people who care are those who grew up on that music.

I'm not a 90's kid, far off actually, but I imagine those who grew up in the 90's appreciate the music more than I. But to say "who would want to win the demo that likes that music?" ... Late 20s and early 30s is not a bad demo to win.

Ed Stolz is shopping!

Seriously, CC is gonna be selling off sticks by the end of the year. He sold KWOD for 23M and may be able to get back in the game for 10M or less!

What Will Happen To The KWOD Calls?

But what will happen to the legendary KWOD Call Letters? Will Entercom switch it to another station in another market they are in or simply sell the calls? Could the new CC 93.1 station become Alternative and use the KWOD calls? Other call letters that have shifted to other frequencies include KXOA which moved from 1470/107.9 to 93.7, KRAK which moved from 1140/105.1 to 93.7 and later to 1470 and of course KCCL from 101.9 to 92.1. Or will those calls be relegated to the Chico market where other Sacramento Calls have moved to like KZAP and KQPT (as well as the Bay Area's KRQR and KLRS)? Maybe Ed Stolz can purchase those calls and use them on his Palm Springs 97.7?

Maybe 93.1 could use the KWOD call letters and make it CLASSIC MODERN ROCK from the 70s to the 90s. some other call letters reused is KKDJ originally in LA then was in Fresno in 1979- 1991 on 105.9 then moved to Bakersfield at 105.3, and KKXX stayed in Bakersfield originally at 107.9 then 105.3 and now at 93.1. as far as The new 93.1 another format could be like KKBZ 105.1 The Blaze in Fresno which is a CLASSIC ROCK format that plays from 1967-2000, it's music would be a cross between THE EAGLE and 98.5.

The KWOD call letters will be parked for safekeeping. 93.1 won't be able to use them.
