KWSS Moving to 93.9

Wickenburg is a C3. Best it will be is KSWG/KHOV.. won't be serviceable in the metro much.

We now have KRPH 99.5 to use as an example of a drop-in that still gets overpowered by a full Class C 100 miles away.
 
Has KWSS improved it's signal at 93.9? Or maybe is it just the time of year. Noticed an improvement here in S.Chandler (in the car)
 
They Have not Improved for "In Home" listeners. The signal is actually weaker on my stereo in the living room.
There good in the car, But they were good in the car at 106.7 as well.
And I see they have another "Construction Permit" to get there Antenna even higher up on North Mountain, but there gonna lose 1 Watt and be down to a whopping 2 Watts. There's not gonna be enough penetration power to make it into houses and overcome all the electrical interference from computers and such.
you can gain all the height in the world, it still isn,t gonna get through walls well.
But sounds GREAT in the cars, guess thats the audience there aiming at.
guess Im just gonna have to listen to them online. Seriously Im at 7th and Indian School and if I don,t get the aerial just right, they are totally distorted when in Stereo Mode. Can,t they at least bump the power up to maybe 25 watts or 100 watts or something?
 
It,s Sad, I ran a "Pirate" station back on the east coast, that I ordered from the back of an electronic magazine. that was 10 times more powerful than KWSS. ya know that just ain,t right.

LPFM's get 100 W. if they're at 30 meters (98 feet) above average terrain...that ain't much height. Go over that, and you have to reduce ERP to scale the 1 millivolt coverage back to what you'd get at 30m. This still works out better in some cases, however, because the coverage that's less than 1 millivolt intensity can be much larger. Here's the talented Michi Eyre with the scoop!

Well, I really Like this station. Im just hoping that they can get more power as well as Height.
It seems like every "Cool" station that goes with a Non-Mainstream Format or does something different, is pretty much stuck on a crap signal.
Makes you wonder if the BIG Corporations have it set up this way, to keep decent Competition from appearing on the airwaves.
KWSS might do better if they could just place there Transmitter on top of one of the higher buildings in Downtown Phoenix and be allowed to run a FULL 100 Watts, instead of going up on one of the mountains and having a measly 3 Watts.
What do you guys think? there's got to be some engineer out here, that would probably agree with me on that. You Need Height as well as Power.

Nope. Height is more important. I'm no engineer but simply look at 92.7. The coverage it gets running 10 watts on top of South Mountain is far better than anything KWSS or even KVIT's main signal can do. 92.7 ain't great, but it's a lot better than the others.
 
I remember 92.7 when it was Energy, And I could not pick them up at all, inside of the warehouse I worked at at 51stave and Roosevelt. All that height didn,t help there signal get through the building or overcome all the electrical/computer interference. of course I did Pick-up 92.7 in the car all over phoenix. you need height but you also need some power behing that height. if you look at the coverage map of KWSS it,s not as good as it used to be. where are they putting a solid grade A Signal down. According to the map, pretty much just a mile or two from the mountain they transmit off of.
pretty much what you would expect for 3 watts.
I think they would do better with a High-gain antenna on top of one of the big buildings downtown and allowed to run 100 watts.

I also like to add all the power in the world, won,t help either. you need a bit of both.
When I lived back east I ran 30 watts from a height of about 40 feet, was in a small rural town, in a valley surrounded by mountains.
you could only Pick up about 4 or 5 radio stations there, so It was a wonderful place to "Play"
I had solid Grade "A" coverage across the whole town and a grade "B" signal across the rest of the valley. once you passed over the mountain though it was gone. Did pick it up on another mountaintop 15 miles away, that was cool.

KWSS is currently using the best kind of antenna for FM (i.e. circularly polarized...a BEXT in this case) and a Type Approved and 'certified for LPFM' transmitter. The Dominator is popular in the pirate community, but it's vertically polarized and otherwise inferior. Ebay continues to allow non-FCC-certified (i.e. pirate) transmitters to run in their listings, and that one appears to be one of them. The FCC requires LPFM's to use certified transmitters in order to keep complete junk off the air.
 
Nope, I left the transmitter back in pennsylvania, figured there was no real clean spot on the dial in this crowded city, so why even try.
You would be suprised how good some of these off E-bay transmitters can sound, there is some junk out there. But if you know what your doing you can get them sounding pretty darn good.
