KXAM going silent?

KXAM 1310 Mesa final sign-off on April 15
(actually April 16, just after midnight):

12:00:01 legal ID

12:00:17 carrier off
12:00:19 carrier on

12:04:58 carrier off

:D

Wrong.

The "carrier drop" was a fake burst of static.

Part of a mini prank to indicate that I was cut off mid sentence before I could reveal that all your conspiracy theories were true!

Carrier was up until taken off at 12:05 by our engineer.

Radio is supposed to be fun people... I will post the audio soon at www.thedailyblender.com

It was sad to turn it off and say goodbye... but come on... have to mess with the malcontents!

Didn't care for some of the songs, but that's because I'm now an old fart, beyond the target audience... ;D

Other songs were mighty enjoyable... Overall rating: FRESH AIR!

Jeff, especially under the circumstances, THAT was pretty darn good radio... Another station would do themselves and their listeners a favor by bringing you into their stable of talent...

Target audience? There was a significant disconnect between the music played during the final hour and the typical KXAM listener. But given the fact only dweebs like Nurse Jeff and me were listening Wednesday night, they could have played Ethiopian dung beetle mating sounds and no one would have noticed!

Goodbye 13~Ten...maybe.

You were far from the only people listening... maybe just the most cynical.

Is there any radio you like?

Don't think I have ever seen you say a positive thing about anything on here... did someone not love you when you were a child?

May be he was loved... a little too much.

I was starting to enjoy Imus in the morning on my way to work.

Laura Ingraham? Bleah.

Every ten minutes she is OUTRAGED!

Boring radio.

Her outrage can be funny depending on who its directed at.

Jeffrey, I liked your choice of tunes. "It reminded me of the "Q"." You did a fine job.
I'm gonna miss Bob/Sheri in the morning.
Hmmm, what to listen to from 10pm to 7am

Jeff, I tuned for a bit before I crashed, heard "Hey Mr. DJ" by They Might Be Giants.

cool!

Maybe.

We once had a Grundig...really liked it until Nurse Jeff couldn't find tubes at Radio Shack one day!

Don't think I have ever seen you say a positive thing about anything on here... did someone not love you when you were a child?

We're still kids and still lookin' for love!

Anyone know what the last song was?

Last 7 songs were:
Modest Mouse... Float On
Chemical Brothers... This Is Your Life
Everlast... AM Radio
Match Box 20... Let's See How Far We've Come
They Might Be Giants... The End Of The Tour
Randy Newman... Drop The Big One

The last song was Pearl Jam... Man Of The Hour.

On the air I explained that it was not supposed to be about me or any one person... just about all of us... and the station.

Just thought it would be a nice way to go out.

Wanted to let a few days go by before I addressed this. Having been in peril of losing my job last fall due to sinking enrollment (and I fear it will happen again), and seeing others lose theirs, I know it's a heartbreaking and terrifying situation. And while there are times one wishes The Nurse would stuff a fez in our venerated Dr.'s baklava receptacle, the truth is, the man's JOB depends on knowing radio that the public will listen to. Why would there be "any radio" he likes? There's not much of it out there right now. Cynical? Heck yeah! It's a cynical business, especially in these times! This isn't L.A., but number 15 in the market is getting up there with the bigger boys and girls wearin' the big kid pants. Is he supposed to make up "positive" things to say to make the local stations' staffs feel good about themselves? That's not going to make for good competition, and it is all about competition. Neither am I going to want to listen to the programs these stations put out. I'm pretty sure, as an early childhood professonal, that the good Dr, was loved or he wouldn't be as successful as he is, though his mom/primary caregiver suffered a world of smart assiness to be sure, God Bless her. These guys on this board have lost their fair share of jobs and taken hurtful hits from their "buds" in the bid too. They wouldn't be where they are if they hadn't. They apparently got back up and started again, and you will too. and you'll be even better for it, and tougher too.

Well.. it's not about toughness... I personally have been through the demise of a station before (not quite like this), it's just about maybe sometimes you don't have to constantly say negative crap just for the sake of saying it. Lots of times this guy and others like him have plenty to say without having any real idea about what they are talking about. After awhile... it gets predictable and annoying.

I don't need sunshine up the caboose... I know the business... but really... does it have to be blind negative bile all the time? Seriously... it comes across as a knee jerk reaction... a typical bit of hacky comment blasting... the kind you would expect from a dim witted teenager... not a radio professional.

I am not saying that you shouldn't fire off your barbs... I am just saying... have some substance and facts to go along with them when you do...

I don't know who he REALLY is, so you have me at a disadvantage on that one... if he is a successful as you say... I would be more impressed if he used his real name. Please, send me a direct email and enlighten me.

And if there is not one good thing to say about Phoenix radio... why is he here?

I just hear a lot of complaining and insults.

If he is a successful as you say... I hope he is actually doing something to make it better... something more than just making comments on this site.

Are any of you?

A top ten song by Edward Bear in 1972 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPeAL657lnk

::)

Others here know the secret identity of the infernal Dr. Akbar. The rest of us can only guess. But, he has revealed much in this post. I have narrowed the radio curmudgeon/consultant field down to 3, um 2, um 1 person fitting this exact demographic/psychographic:

Larry Daniels
Buzz Bennett
Todd Wallace ;)

It IS an honor, Todd (if that IS you!)

Jeffry, as people age, they get cranky. That's all I can say about that.

Good grief you guys, I don't have any idea who Akbar is! Why would I want to? This is a board, the point is that you can be anonymous. He is the reason I made reference to his business, his and Jeff's sig says "media Consultants" and he has made posts about advising KFYI to switch to FM. I assume KFYI wouldn't be taking advice from him if they didn't consider him successful. Regarding tough posts, there was a poster a few years back who is now banned and who, Like Lord Voldemort, should never be named aloud or he might come back. He does now and then but they quickly remove his posts. He would mercilessly rain down doo doo on the doc. Criticism? It was FIRE, and it was RELENTLESS. It dominated this board and it was mean and vicious. The Doc would just take it like the guy was a little pest and answer back with something funnier and wittier each time, which made me think he's certainly taken a lion's share of criticism in his time and come out better for it. Legend too, I think he tangled with the guy a time or too. I hear what you are saying though Jeffrey and understand. Why is this all in Italics?

TW3? YIKES!

All these "dim witted teenagers" from Buckeye said last Thursday was ...there was a significant disconnect between the music played during the final hour and the typical KXAM listener. But given the fact only dweebs like Nurse Jeff and me were listening Wednesday night, they could have played Ethiopian dung beetle mating sounds and no one would have noticed!

Check out the playlist from the final hour of KXAM if you think Nurse Jeff and I are shootin' from the hip. Then check out KXAM's 7-Mid ratings and see if you can find any listeners.

Instead of the Buckeye Boyz being topic du jour, it should be the ownership of 13~Ten who decided to take the station dark and surrender the license. What kind of sense did that make?

Why are so many posts using italics, anyway?

Yeah, but I'm a radio listener not a radio employee, I just give my opinion on what I hear as a listener.

I still think the Gersons are nuts to shut down the station, where else can I hear Matt get his ass handed to him by Wolfman Jack a few weeks before he died?

BTW, listened to 1100's Sunday offerings, one was a high tech show that is on in NY and Phoenix and was so high tech, they did the entire show over a phone line and spent the whole time I was listening reading press releases about new products! Sounded like they were in a tiled closet.

Italians?

Hi Jeffry. I'm sorry about KXAM. You've got too much experience and inspiration to be sitting around for very long, though. I hope the best for the whole crew. I worked for KXAM for a minute, after I left the Big To's. I gracelessly split when a better job came along. Cindi was very nice.

I've posted and lurked here for about ten years...I think a little more...back when it was this purple and yellow thing (does anyone remember that?)...Anyway, I've always thought that Akbar was Charles Goyette. Whoever he is, he knows a lot about local radio, and he seems like an oldster; only a d-bag cracks wise at a funeral, though.

Hey Patti, who got banned? Who do you mean? I'm intrigued. It wasn't BK, was it? I remember he used to post here, and those threads could get pretty entertaining.
