KXOJ Expands...

KITO and KGND in Vinita sold to KXOJ, Inc. for $1.8 Million according to today's All Access...

Looks like they've got I-44 between Tulsa and Joplin covered now.

I would guess that KITO 96.1 FM will simulcast KXOJ's Christian format... I did hear that rumor.

KGND 1470 AM going to a simulcast of the Sports Animal???

Hey, that's great for those areas.

And great for that radio group.

Good to see them expanding.

The main KXOJ 100.9 signal has just applied to go to class C3 status from the current A in a upgrade. Hopefully this can help the battle against Spirit.

Would certainly make it more interesting, to say the least.

I'd be interested to see what would happen ratings-wise if the playing field were level with wattage.

It could take years since they just applied for the construction permit. We have been down that road before and it takes a lot of time and money. The FCC isn't handing out upgrades easily. Their focus has been on HD/digital.

It's kinda sad to see corporate radio assimilate and suck the life out of another neat little mom & pop station. Dave Boyd was one of the good guys. However, I think he sold to Larry Steckline for about $500K a year or so ago. Looks like Steckline turned one heck of a profit on the deal. Wow!

Whomever calls KXOJ "corporate" has no idea what "corporate" means.

That is a big price to pay for Vinita, OK.

You can't move the stick any closer to Tulsa because of KXY... You have a C2 at Harrison, AR to the east and a full class C at Clinton, MO to the NE, so I would guess that they feel like they can turn a big profit in the Vinita/Miami/Grand Lake area.

I would guess that KGVE 99.3 is in a good position to make some money doing good ol' local radio for the area. I always thought that would be a nice area to own a station in.

I think KGND-AM is the old KVIN. If so, that's the very first station I worked for when I was 16. Kind of cool that the corporate giant (sarcasim), KXOJ, got a hold of it. I grew up in Vinita & I'm very familiar with KITO (Keep It Turned Off...that's what we called it). Of course, we were kids. ;D

Don't know when you were at KVIN, but I find it a little ironic that the KGND calls are there now. When KGND 107.5 signed on, it was co-owned with KVIN. I'm glad to see it finally separated from KITO, even if it was Steckline who did it. After all, it served as little, if anything, more than a KITO simulcast under the previous ownership.

Also, in the same region, it's good to see KGLC has been freed from the grip of religious broadcasting. It's another station that has, more or less, returned to its roots running a gold-based AC format. That's what I remember the old KSSM being before the owners (pre-1991) decided a simulcast of "Sizzlin' Country 91 KGLC" would do better.

Is there another station keeping KYAL from fully moving into the Tulsa area? There's a CP to get a piece of it as a rimshot but couldn't that tower be moved further north?

According to their study, it's been moved about as close to Tulsa as possible. It's technically short-spaced to KQOB 96.9, and it's very close to being short-spaced to KMOD 97.5.

Yes, KGND-FM was down the hall playing AC while KVIN was playing oldies. This is when it was owned by Jack Lee & I can't remember the manager's name. He was kicked out for whatever reasons by Jack. This was in 1989 & in 1990 I went to work for KGLC/KSSM Sizzlin' Country. I did part-time on the weekends & worked under Bill VanNess. He was a great guy but like so many others in small market radio...he got screwed. I had the honor of working with Bill again at KGVE/Grove in the early 90s. Man...this thread is bringing back some memories!!!

This is sad. KITO was a unique local station. Last I heard KGVE was only live in morning drive. So we've got public radio on the old KGND 107.5 and KITO turning into a KXOJ repeater. Sad days. Nothing personal against KXOJ, I just don't believe their format will serve the majority interest of Northeast Oklahoma and I don't see KGVE being local and unique to the extent KITO was. One more blow to live local broadcasting. Plus, this is the same company that put an end to the Kross. Not really thrilled.

I'm told by a very inside source at Cityplex that KITO will not be changing format at all. I'm inclined to believe them because KXOJ has simulcasts in that area already and KITO is already a money-maker. Why spend another million to duplicate coverage?

And hey- give them a break on 100.3. The signal sucks and they still tried it for 4 years, no cheap committment according to some of the former jocks who have commented on this board.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if KITO didn't change formats. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if it did either. However, KXOJ did run KMMY as a country station for quite-a-few years before finally deciding it would do better as the Sports Animal. Just because KXOJ runs mostly religious stations doesn't mean that's all it's capable of running.

Former jocks said that? Who & Prove it? I don't mind being wrong but I haven't heard any former Kross jock say anything bad - including myself.

Uhhh, I think you misunderstood. I did not say anyone said anything bad. To the contrary, I was tipping my hat to the staff and owners who put that much time and money into a poor signal. The station sounded great the first few months and the last year, with some rough spots in the middle. I do not know too many people, jocks or managers who would stick with that for so long.

The other funny thing I just found out from my former 100.3 friend is how many of the staff from that station have landed on other stations in town. I guess like 3 of them are in the Renda building and what-not.

Renda seems to be the landing place for ex Kross Jocks. Let me name the ways.

Sammy Carillo - Went to Renda as promotions director and is now in nursing. Married KXOJ's Rachelle Renee. Good catch, Sammy! I guess there WAS a divine purpose for you working in that building. They've got a baby now.

Josh Ashton - Part time at K-Hits. Apparently now working toward being a pastor.

Samantha -Last name? She sounds great on KBEZ. Good AC sound. Also sounds good on K-hits

Scott Herrold -(former Kross PD) Burning up weekends at K-Hits. When's somone in a big market going to hire this guy? Smart as all get out.

Herrold's awesome. Can't wait to see him land a fulltime gig again.
