KYKX Does It Again

Danny are Dru are effectively offending what few listeners they still have left because of comments they made about Heather Mills' prosthetic leg and the missing Boy Scout from North Carolina. There is an email circulating the Longview area demanding an on-air apology and boycott of the station.

Subject: Off-Color Humor on KYKX

To Whom It May Concern:

First, let me say that I am not a regular listener to KYKX radio, so you may
want to dismiss this letter completely. I hope you choose to read it.
Yesterday (Tuesday), when I got in my car to go to work, my radio was
accidentally tuned in to 105.7. Before I could change the station, I heard
Danny and Dru talking about "Dancing with the Stars". They were joking
about the contestant, Heather Mills, who happens to be an amputee. They
made several off-color jokes about her "wooden leg" - wondering if it was
going to fly off the stage during her performance, They made several other
comments that were completely inappropriate. Is this standard policy for
your station? Making fun of the handicapped or physically challenged? I
called the radio station, got the two guys on the phone and they defended
their actions, saying it was funny and everyone was laughing about it. One
of them, I don't know which one, said he could joke about the physically
challenged because he has a handicapped son. I'm sorry, but to perpetuate
the myth that the physically challenged people in this world are okay to
make fun of is sick. It is cheap, low-class and offensive. It is not
funny. What next? Let's make jokes about the one-breasted cancer survivor
in the swimsuit contest? Maybe her fake boobs might go flying! This type
of humor is just as morally offensive as racial slurs or ethnic jokes. They
should be ashamed and immediately apologize on-air to all of the listeners
(especially the physically challenged and amputees) for their poor behavior.

Second - today, they were discussing the young boy scout that got lost in
the woods. Somehow they found humor with a missing child. I wonder how he
would feel if it had been his son missing and the media made fun of the
situation? The comment - it's a good thing he wasn't a girl scout or the
bears would have eaten all his cookies - again low-class humor. This child
could have died, it is a miracle he didn't. I'm thankful that he was found
safe and sound. Again, these two radio "personalities" completely
disappointed me and reminded me of why I don't listen to KYKX anymore. I'll
be sending a copy of this e-mail to everyone on my address list in the area
asking them to consider changing the station. I will encourage each of them
to do the same.

Thank You,

This just goes back to knowing your market, and it's obvious by the poor ratings and the offensive remarks, that after all this time, Danny & Dru just don't know the market they serve. I wasn't a huge fan of their show, but Ken Curtis, Diane Day, and Warren Bradley never stooped to this level, and neither did John Moore at KNUE. As I mentioned in another post, you're in the middle of an area dominated by Southern Baptists, and that's who you are catering to. I wouldn't be reading from the "Opie & Anthony or Howard Stern Guide to Pushing the Envelope on the Mic".

I guess what surprises me the most about this story is that they still have people that listen to them. For the past several years, when I've been back in Longview (or Tyler), when I go into businesses who are playing the radio, I haven't heard KYKX. I remember when I was growing up, just about everywhere you went, if you heard a radio in a business, it was always KYKX. It is truly very sad to see what has become of that station.

Agreed. There is something to be said for professionalism.

Methinks you should add KYKX to your signature, snoman. It would be very appropriate.

I can assure you that it is not our policy to air off color humor. We take a lot of pride in our community service and family values. However, sometimes, with live radio, things are said that should not be said. I would like to apologize on behalf of the station for any inappropriate language or off color humor. These matters will be addressed in house.

Also, I am available by phone if you wish to talk.

Sincerely,

Ginger Nimmons
General Manager
East Texas Radio Group

i'm just glad she didn't dance to Knock On Wood.another thing they will not say is "come on Heather get out there and shake a leg. ha ha heee hee.and tell that listener that"S why they have buttons on the radio.i had complaints one time on my program, turned out it was the OTHER station putting people up to calling as i found out when i hired one of their employees., hate to admit this but i beat the heck out of him(texas justice) and gladly payed the 100.00 assault charge..and i hear Paul Mccartney will be recording a version of his hit and call it I Saw Her Leaning there"". Most listeners will accept this kind of humor because thet know that's just what it is.and if the GM at that station has any testicles, he'll stand up for his employees...

whoops, i don't guess Ginger has gonads, unless she had a recent sex change operation, so i will apologize. But my point is a great GM will stand up for their employees.humor is funny to some, offensive to others. And Greg why don't you just "accidently change your station again.your statement is a crock of crap, son.Hey Longview Texas ain't the radio capitol of the world, you know??

Didn't Consultant Ed Shane hire these nim-rods? If you look at Ed Shane's website he guarantees clients he knows good character and talent and will only recommend the best in integrity.

I worked with Ed years ago in Bryan-College Station. What a trip he is!

For the most part i'm with the poster meeonni or whatever his name is.

Mr. Menotti,

Please consider the possibility that I was not the person who started the email campaign. I merely posted an email that I received through a long chain of forwards, and posted it as an FYI to the readers of this board as some might find the information contained of interest. Whether you or I or anyone personally find the comments insulting or not is not the issue. The issue here is that KYKX is effectively driving away what few listeners they have left.

Thank you.

It really IS a shame how far KYKX has fallen...KNUE at least can say they are victim to corporate operations that handcuff the locals...KYKX is just a BAD product.

"It's a Shame What's Happened To KVIL" is a play on a radio promo that KVIL did in the early '80's that said, "It's a Shame What's Happened To Radio". It's on the reelradio website, if you wish to hear it. That's why it fits for KVIL. I guess since KYKX used to have the Big Bass Classic (not sure if they still do these days), I guess I can say "KYKX has gone fishin' ". That pretty much says it all.

It's actually a shame with KYKX being way out there in Left-Field and Clueless, both KFRO's simulcasting Tyler stations, 96X basically being a VT'd station operating out of Tyler, and KLUE/KLGV being gone, Longview really has no radio stations serving the community anymore. Last time I checked, about 75,000 people lived there, and about 85,000 live in Tyler. Not much of a difference, yet no crumbs for Longview. Do these corporations not care about those 75,000 listeners? I know KYKX doesn't! If they did, they'd right their wrongs. I'd get rid of everyone, but Paula Prince and start over. The problem is they're so tainted now, you'd really have to do a good job convincing the community that this is the "Good KYKX" and not the evil KYKX that we've known for about 7 or 8 years now. But, word to ET Radio Group, Waller, Clear Channel, and the rest, you have a huge community 40 miles to your East that you have turned your back on, you should all be ashamed of yourselves, as for KYKX, that goes without saying.

DRU and company are just a bunch of uneducated nimrods. They wanted to get talked about, because this is theonly place they receive attention. Its certainly not on the air. Ginger does what Dru sez.so there is no one truly overseeing his stupidity. The guy lives, breathes obnoxiousness, that is the only thing he knows with his limited iq. I wouldn't be surprised if menotti is him, an alleged friend, or an aquaintaince. His only listeners. The petiton should be addressed to the advertisers on the show, and to theri competitors sales dept,so they may lure the advertisers away to their station. It wouldn't be a difficult sale.

kplex, i don't know or care to know any of these people.so don't get a complex.my point is just don't listen as they're an abundant of choices to get your fix..you can't please all the listeners all the time.humor can be funny to some and offensive to others.EVERY BODY hopped on the Heather Mills banter.it was a fodder free for all.so get over it.try an ipod and an ice cold bud lite.

It is sad that the radio legacy in/of Longview has gone the way of the Edsel.

I, personally, am not inclined toward Longview. Never have been. However, I still find it sad that a city the size of Longview has simulcasts to serve it with the one live/local station running off its 4-5 listeners.

Menotti, you have summed up what is wrong with radio. Its the attitude that you are projecting that only emboldens DRU and the losers at KYKX to continue to drive that station more into a cess pool. I'll give you credit for not wanting to know them, they are not well liked.

First of all, I've listened and they suck. But if they're just now getting around to telling Heather Mills jokes, they're behind every other station that's made fun of her. She wouldn't even be on the show if she didn't have the artificial leg. Also, there are sites where you can go to bet if she'll lose it or not, and I'm sure Letterman and Leno have been all over it too. I think that's being a little thin skinned to get offended about that. The missing boy scout wasn't a story with a punch line and should've been off limits. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they get shown the door, and the station will sound better the next day.

I agree with this...Hell, Heather Mills herself is poking fun at the leg in the Dancing With the Stars promos....the Boy Scout story WAS over the line...It's just immaturity and lack of talent on the jock's part to go for the easy joke. How does KYKX go from outstanding promotions like coming up with the Hands on a Hardbody and Big Bass Classic... to this???

I agree, if they joked about the missing boy scout, that was in poor taste.but that[EDIT]Heather mills really put it to Paul Mccartney and deserves all she gets.understand this week she'll dance to zztop, but the lyric will be She's got a leg""and she know how to use it...or maybe joe tex, skinny leg and all.
