KYNO to move to 940.

When I first read the story, I was under the impression that KYNO was making the move to 940 and that KWRU's programming would move to 1300. Reading this morning's Bentley column in the BEE, looks as if Ostlund will launch a new format on 1300 as well.

I wonder what John plans to do, I wouldn't see him making 1300 another talk station, perhaps bring back the Sporting News format formally on KGED 1680 and carry the Oakland A's, or bring back the Dial Global Nostalgia format that KJWL had for several years, or Scott Shannon's True Oldies national format.

Making 1300 into Scott Shannon's True Oldies would have been interesting as they could revive "The Big 13" however, John IS moving the KYNO calls to 940. Yes, the article does give me the impression that John simply bought KWRU and not traded frequencies.

Anyone hearing what John plans to do with 1300? Any rumors on the changes that will happen with the current line-up when it moves to 940? Anyone want to start any rumors (this board is pretty quiet).

if you go to the FCC web site and look at the asset purchase agreement for KWRU, you will find that Ostland is giving Multicultural $2 million and the 1300 station, minus the KYNO callsign. Multicultural is giving Ostaland the 940 station, minus the KWRU callsign.

I think I saw that they had an LMA also, so all these changes might take place soon.

From what I read in the Asset Purchase Agreement, Ostland is getting the raw end of this deal. He's giving Multicultural a Nautel 5 KW transmitter and Multicultural is giving him a Harris DX50.

All I have to say is "good luck with that John".

:)

Is the move still on? The original BEE story said there would be simulcasting on KWRU starting around March 1. That's not happened. The KYNO website was talking the "Big 940" - that's gone. I've not listened in the last couple weeks.

The move is April 1, The simulcast will run for a month.

I know both 940 and 580 KMJ are 50,000 watts and have directional patterns running the same direction. But, according to the maps on Radio Locator, KMJ goes out MUCH farther. When in Sacramento a couple of weeks ago, I can get KMJ pretty good, but not 940 at all. I think the new owner better start doing some tweaking?

I'm not sure how much they could do, and whether or not there would be much return for out-of-market coverage. The patterns are actually quite different. KMJ is here:

http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/587459-74648.pdf

and KWRU is here:

http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/305681-3727.pdf

Notice the full-scale graph maximum though. KMJ's is 10,000 mV/m while KWRU's is 5,000. Besides that, KMJ has some really nice tall towers that reduce fading along with the fat low dial position. There's no way to compete with that signal-wise.

This past weekend the "New" 940 KYNO was airing the "History of Rock and Roll".

Great Program hosted by the Late and Great Bill Drake. BUTT, there was a Problem!

Some of the music WAS PLAYING ONLY ONE of THE SIDES of THE STEREO TRACKS!!!

"California Dreaming" by the Mamas and Papas was only being done by the Mamas!!
The way it sounded, One Could NOT hear the Papa's voices!!!

"Cherish" by the Association sounded really UN-Balanced!

Another "Motown" number sounded really different too!!!

Only had time to listen to the 10:00 AM hour on Saturday, April 17th.

I'm sure that Bill Drake never intended the program to Sound that way.

AND On the New Radio Channel for his old KYNO calls?? What would Bill say???

Someone needs to talk to the engineers over there???

that is a good program, it's 54 hours long. I remember having to record it into an old DCS system years ago... it came on 33 1/3 RPM LP's. We got the show late, and the station had advertised it for several weeks. I think it played over Memorial Day weekend, if I recall correctly. As the first of the show was starting to play, I was still recording the last hours. I was never so glad to stop recording LP's into DCS.. LOL.

I remember our DCS system didn't have that much record/storage time, so when the show played, we had to delete it from the system.

I remember we played it again a couple of years later, so out came the turntable and I started recording the LP's again.

I don't know whatever happened to those LP's. I had always wondered if that show wasn't available on CD, anyone know?

since it's AM and a mono station, someone didn't "mono out" the output of the automation system, that would be my guess. In other words, they took say left channel and sent it to the transmitter, and it wasn't mono-ed out.

Is there anything on 1300am yet

They are still running a loop message to switch to 940 AM, I thought on May 1 that would end, maybe Monday something will happen.
