IDK if their testing but in bakersfield and on the madera KiwiSDR KYNO keeps going off and turning back on and IDK why.
Link? They are installing a new transmitter, John O mentioned it on his Facebook page, they are also putting in a new grounding system, which the copper wiring was stolen last year.
NVM found itLink?
I don't think a high power transmitter itself would be the cost issue, but the power bill could be. I don't think KYNO has an FM translator and the FM dial is crowded in Fresno.I'm curious. How much would that new transmitter cost? And why would anyone spend such a large amount for an AM station? Why not just buy a lower powered rig if most of your listening was on your FM translator?

The owner is will connected in the community and probably does well with his stations by keeping the overhead relatively low and relying on local advertising which seems to be friendlier to older demos. KYNO is loved by it's owner, a small number of diehard fans and about a dozen or two people who refuse to let go of AM radio.
50kw full time has to be $15-20K a month power bill
The NX50 can easily run MDCL. Go into the menu activate it, chose the type of MDCL and the compression. That will save them money. Their power bill with MDCL on $4000 to $4500.
This is what my power from PSE (Puget Sound Energy) costs. These rates go into effect 8/1/25. Base rate, $465.54, Demand $10.53 and Per KWh 10.3254 cents
In July a 50KW day, 5KW night using MDCL during the Day mode. $2400.00 This station does not run air conditioning.
Being that KYNO is in Fresno, California I bet they do use air conditioning. Running MDCL would save them power in several ways. The transmitter generates less heat, Saves power. The air conditioner has to work less and saves power. Not knowing their power rates, they should be able to keep the power bill under $5k.
NX50 sticker price in 2018 was $122,116.00 This is just a guess for a 2025 price, $150,000.00
Technically NORTH American made ---- IIRC, Nautel's main plant is in New Brunswick, Canada.....And it's American made!
because of tariff concerns, i think more of the work was shifted to bangor.Technically NORTH American made ---- IIRC, Nautel's main plant is in New Brunswick, Canada.....
Some units may be assembled in Bangor, ME....I was under the impression that Bangor was Nautel's office site only....
Regardless of location....Nautel puts out some really great transmitters! Built like tanks --- made to LAST!!
Service after the sale is also exceptional......
Now I wish KYNO would upgrade its online stream. 32 kbit/s HE-AAC is a good option for dial-up users. But there are less of those left today than shortwave listeners.
If they really want to stick with that bitrate for the most bandwidth-limited users, it would be wonderful if they at least made an additional 192 kbit/s or even 256 kbit/s AAC-LC stream available as an "HD" option.
This from KYNO.
Yeah, we’ve played with the idea. It’s been on the back burner until this site re-build is completed.
It will likely be something we look at in the near future. Out of all of our 5 formats, it is the most streamed by far.
